JANUARY 3RD - 7TH 2001

BRIDGET EVANS
Bridget Evans looked pretty good at the Bay Classic but missing that break cost her dearly. To top that off she puncture right at the end and slipped out of yellow and down to third overall. It hardly seems fair but cycling is a very cruel sport at times and a hard task master. Now in her fifth year of cycling competition Bridget has travelled to the USA and europe to compete in top events. She is a consistent rider and has 24 top 10 placings on the road. Last year she was fourth at the Bay Classic so in a way going up a spot is a bonus but I don't think it will make her happy. Having ridden the womens Tour de Femme, Tour of Italy and the HP Laser Jet Challenge I am sure that we will hear more of Bridget this year. Lets hope that 2001 is a big year for her.

KATIE MACTIER
Its hard to believe that Katie Mactier has only been competing in road cycling for just over 12 months.
Now 25 years of age I asked what had kept her so busy. "Well I was in to running concentrating on the 100/ 200/400 metres and then I decided to have a go at triathlon. So thats how I was introduced to the bike". Then I did some testing at the VIS and they said I was better suited to road racing so here I am". And doing very well I might add. Katie now has a tight hold on the green sprinters jersey and after a great start to the year can not lose it. Katie tells me she has been doing as many big races as possible including the womens World Cup placing 7th in the aussie leg. Then it was off to the USA and the HP Laser Jet Challenge. All was going well till in the Fitchburg tour when she broke her collar bone. But things are now looking good for the
vivacious young lady with plenty of guts and determination who just loves her new found sport and all the excitement cycle racing has given her so far. Especially the Bay Classic and that treasured sprinters jersey.

ANNA WILSON
For Anna Wilson 2001 is off to a great start with her fourth series victory in the Skilled Bay Cycling Classic.
What a win it was and what a way to do it, in a breakaway and then win a two rider sprint finish. In front of a huge crowd the victory was sweet and more important her mother was there to see it. There was no doubt in the end that Anna was the best rider simply because none of the other contenders were even in the hunt. When Anna gets a sniff of a victory watch out because she means business. I had a chance to see her in action in the Tour de Snowy last year and while she wasn't the overall winner by hell did she give a great show with great sprint displays in Thredbo. Currently ranked number 3 in the world my guess is that it won't be long before she is knocking on the door looking for that number one world ranking. In a world that lords its male competitors and
gives token acknowlegement for great achievements by women far too much, Anna is a true champion a great australian and someone we can all be truly proud of.

ROCHELLE GILMORE
The Skilled Bay Cycling Classic has been a tough haul for the classy young rider from the NWSIS team. This year she was in yellow after outsprinting the tough international Anna Wilson but then the next day a lapse in concentration saw her back in the pack just another faceless rider. Last year Rochelle was leading the race and on top of the world until a puncture with just four laps to go saw her world come crashing down when she was left without a lap out for repairs. Then twice this year the older and wiser rider Wilson has pulled the pin on her chances at a win in the Skilled Bay Cycling Classic. At Torquay Wilson used every bit of cunning she could muster to make sure she was in a break- away. Then she worked hard to ensure that it lapped the field
leaving her rival eliminated with two laps to go. In the final round she was out there with Sara Carrigan working like a trojan and riding to victory. Can Gilmore win a Bay Classic well I think she can with a little luck and a lot of determination. I know she was a champion as a junior but this is senior company now where things are vastly different. So come on Rochelle, decide between road or track and set a course that can fulfill your destiny.
