SKILLED BAY CYCLING CLASSIC 2001
JANUARY 3RD - 7TH 2001

TORQUAY

MENS EVENT
Robbie "the magnificent" McEwen claimed race two of the Skilled Bay Cycling Classic at Torquay today crossing the line in the classic style of a victor with both arms extended to the heavens. Speaking during the official presentations McEwen told the large crowd of spectators that racing will only get tougher as he plans to push the pace to the limits in the next round at Apollo Bay. Brent Dawson moves in to green after taking the preme points on offer today. Stuart O'Gradys third was just reward and the luckless Brett Aitken managed to place 10th and at least get a start on the points list. It was an awesome effort today with the peleton virtually intact for the whole event until a crash with just 3 laps to go marred the race. Lapping at an average speed of 53KPH on some occassions gave little opportunity for anyone to get away and that was how it would remain for the duration of the race. There is a pattern emerging from the race with many riders picking up fitness daily and that will prove a boon to spectators who should be in for a real treat over the next three days.

WOMENS EVENT
They say cycling is a cruel sport and their is nothing crueler than the hard fast and exciting sport of criterium racing which can knock you down every time you seem to get on top. Today Rochelle Gilmore and the NSWIS team learnt a hard cruel lesson as the experienced Anna Wilson manipulated the womens race to perfection on the small street circuit at Torquay. Gilmore would at least salvage some points with a 7th placing but the whole field with the exception of six breakaway riders were eliminated after the determined chasers lapped the field with around ten minutes of race time left. Biggest winner of the daring move on the short 650 metre trecherous course was Bridget Evans who is now in yellow as the overall leader of the series. With three days of cycling left it is still a close battle and no doubt there will be plenty of action still to come.
