SKILLED BAY CYCLING CLASSIC 2001
JANUARY 3RD - 7TH 2001

APOLLO BAY

MENS EVENT
ROBBIE THE MAGNIFICENT
Round three and rack up win three for Robbie the Magnificent who dominated another action packed race today as the Skilled Bay Cycling Classic moved to Apollo Bay on the Victorian far south coast. The power may have been out in Apollo Bay township prior to the race start but McEwen had plenty in those sprinters legs as he controlled the race to perfection gaining maximum points and increasing his lead in the series. Those who did manage to get off the front and were no threat to the Tour de France stage winner, may have thought they would have an easy ride to victory, but McEwen is far too professional to allow that and so any attempts were quickly reeled in. With lap times getting as low as 50 seconds over the 800 metre course average lap speeds in excess of 60kph were common providing a very large crowd with spectacular sights of the peleton usually reserved for the big tour events. Considering most of the field rode the 115km to the "Bay" it was an awesome display by all riders who should be commended for providing a really entertaing race and a great spectacle for all those present to witness. McEwen now has a full rounds lead on the points table but don't expect any let up in the series. Now that McEwen has them by the throat there is only the "Kill" left.

WOMENS EVENT
Rochelle Gilmore put herself back in contention today as the race for the number one spot in the womens Skilled Bay Cycling Classic remains wide open and it's anybodies race still. Wilson was a little off the pace today and that gave Jeanette Shwarzz a sniff at a victory and she willingly took the win. Bridget Evans, Rochelle Gilmore & Anna Wilson still remain the hot contenders for the overall victory and race series leader Evans has promised that tomorrow her team will go out and just hammer the field making it as tough as they can for all riders. With Gilmores NSWIS team not in the best of form it will be up to her to take control of her destiny and show the other competitors if she has the talent to position herself well in tomorrows penultimate stage at Geelong. In the sprint section Katie Mactier holds a commanding lead over Sarah Carrighan and Hayley Rutherford but will likewise need to continue her assault on the points table to ensure holding on to the prized green sprinters jersey.
