St Trinian's, the infamous school for 'young ladies', is once again facing dire financial crisis. The bank is threatening headmistress Camilla Fritton with closure. Meanwhile her unorthodox doctrine of free expression and self empowerment is also under threat from new Education Minister Geoffrey Thwaites. He may be an old flame of Camilla’s, but right now he’s determined to bring discipline and order to the anarchic school. But the St Trinian’s girls are in a league of their own; smart, fearless and determined to defend the school they love to the end. They need to unite the warring girl gang cliques and come up with the cash fast. Sassy Head Girl Kelly and newcomer Annabelle join forces and gather together a motley crew of teachers, the fiendishly charming Flash Harry and the resourceful and ruthless pupils to pull off the heist of the century by stealing the famous painting, "Girl With A Pearl Earring". Can their combined cunning, girlish wiles and lack of shame win the day before the authorities close down the school? "St Trinian's" has plenty going for it, including a good cast, lashings of anarchy, loads of humour and, a rock your brains out soundtrack. Stars Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Jodie Whittaker, Fenella Woolgar, Gemma Arterton and, Russell Brand as Flash Harry. Lots of fun! 4 STARS.
Jerry and Mike are childhood friends living in Passaic, New Jersey, trying to make ends meet. Jerry is the neighbourhood mechanic and lives in a trailer near the power plant which he swears is slowly killing him with its 'microwaves'. Across the street, Mike lives and works in the local video rental store, "Be Kind Rewind", struggling to keep the ailing business owned by his boss, Mr Fletcher financially afloat and, physically, in one piece. When Mr Fletcher, a huge fan of Jazz legend and local hero, Fats Waller, takes a trip to commemorate Fats’ death, he leaves Mike in charge of the store, warning him to keep the accident-prone Jerry away from the shop. Later that night, Jerry attempts to sabotage the town’s power plant. While doing so, he gets caught in a huge electromagnetic field. When he visits the video store next day, his magnatized brain erases all the video tapes. To meet customer demands and save their hides, they must shoot their own versions of the titles Mr Fletchers customers want to rent. Cast of thousands includes Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover and Mia Farrow. The slapstick Chaplinesque comedy is a hoot!. 4 1/2 STARS.

Sydney undergoes a double corneal transplant that restores her sight after more than two decades of blindness. After the surgery, neural specialist Dr Paul Faulkner is enlisted to help Sydney cope with the difficult adjustment of regaining her sight and making sense of what she begins to see. Coupled with the support of her older sister, Helen, Sydney’s world slowly starts to come back into focus. But her happiness is short-lived. Inexplicable bizarre and frightening images begin to haunt her. Are they a temporary result of her surgery? Are they caused by Sydney's mind adjusting to sight, or her imagination? Sydney is convinced her new eyes have opened the door to a terrifying world only she can see. Stars Jessica Alba, Parker Posey and Alessandro Nivola. Enough scary moments to recommend it. 3 STARS.
It is 1926. Harry Houdini is the most famous performer in the world. Audiences flock to watch him perform death-defying acts. The 'man behind the performer' is a different story. It has been thirteen years since his mother passed away. Houdini's greatest regret is he was not at his mother's bedside when she died and did not hear her last words. This haunts Houdini, so much so that he offers a $10,000 reward to anyone who can contact his mother from beyond the grave and reveal her dying secret. Enter Mary and her young daughter Benji. Poor and uneducated, they live in the slums of Edinburgh. To survive, Mary uses her feminine wiles and deceptive ways in a psychic act that is part burlesque and part occult. Benji gathers information on audience members any way she can, by stealing, breaking and entering, or sneaking into public records, then Mary uses this information to convince the audience that she can communicate with their deceased loved ones. When Mary and Benji learn of Houdini's cash reward, they set their sights on the world's greatest escape artist as their ultimate target. Can Houdini escape the clutches of these con-artists? Big cast includes Guy Pearce as Harry Houdini. Co-stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Timothy Spall and up-and-coming young actress, Saoirse Ronan. Well worth a look at! 3 1/2 STARS.
It's not easy being Thomas. He's turning 16, and, moving into a new house and school. His older brother Charlie announces their arrival to the neighbours by banging a wooden spoon and wailing on the front lawn. Charlie doesn’t speak. He’s autistic and has ADHD. He’s also unpredictable, sometimes unmanageable, and quite often disgusting. Thomas hates his brother but wishes he didn’t. The Mollisons are an army family; but it’s not what you'd call a regimented life, or even a regular household. Thomas's cricket-obsessed father, Simon, talks to his teddy. Simon and Maggie are openly intimate, and now Maggie is going to have another baby. When she has complications with her pregnancy, Thomas and Simon between them take on Charlie's daily routine. Thomas experiences the less savoury aspects of coping with his brother. What he didn’t expect is the shit-smearing; shopping centre tantrums and, riding in the Autistic School bus. It's now sink or swim time. The truth is Thomas is drowning. Literally! Luke Ford gives a stunning performance as Charlie. Co-stars Toni Collette, Gemma Ward and Rhys Wakefield. Recommended. 3 1/2 STARS.
Joseph Grusinsky and Bobby Green inhabit two conflicting worlds in late 1980s New York, the former becoming a cop and the latter is the popular manager of "El Caribe", the legendary Russian-owned nightclub in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach. Bobby spends his evenings in a den of iniquity, indulging in drugs, alcohol, and gambling, with his gorgeous girlfriend Amada never far from his arm. Their two worlds meet when the two men's father, Deputy Chief Albert 'Bert' Grusinsky, together with Joseph, asks Bobby for information about the patron of the club, Vadim, who is the nephew of the club's squeaky clean owner, and a dangerous member of the Russian criminal underworld. Initially Bobby sides with Vadim until the cops raid the club. Humiliated by Joseph, Vadim hits back, attempting to assassinate Joseph. With his brother lying in hospital fighting for his life, Bobby is forced to rethink his loyalty. Cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall. 4 STARS.
Set on the radical frontier of California’s turn of the century petroleum boom, this is the story of the rise of one Daniel Plainview, who transforms himself from a down and out silver miner raising a son on his own into a self-made oil tycoon. When Plainview gets a mysterious tip from Paul Sunday that there’s a little town out West where oil is oozing out of the ground, he heads with his son, H.W., to take their chances in dust-worn town of Little Boston. In this hardscrabble town, where the main excitement centers around the holy roller church of charismatic preacher Eli Sunday, Plainview and H.W. make their lucky strike. But even as the well raises all of their fortunes, nothing will remain the same as conflicts escalate and every human value: love, greed, hope, community, belief, ambition and even the bond between father and son, is imperiled by corruption, deception and the flow of oil. Powerful performances by Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Kevin J O'Connor & Dillon Freasier. SOLID 4 STARS.
Will Hayes is a thirty something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10-year-old daughter Maya, starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything. Will's story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the presidential campaign. Will re-lives his past as an idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women. Will hopelessly attempts a gentler version of his story for his daughter and changes the names so Maya has to guess who is the woman her father finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next door Emily; his longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April, or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer. Super cast includes Ryan Reynolds, Isla Ficher and Abigail Breslin. A pleasure to watch. 4 STARS.
David Rice has grown up with a mysterious power of which many have dreamed. He is completely and utterly mobile, able to zap through wormholes in the space-time fabric to any city, any building, any place at all that his mind desires. In the blink of an eye, he can 'jump' from one side of the earth to the other and back again. He can tour twenty different sunsets in one night, have breakfast on the Egyptian Sphinx, spend the day surfing in Australia, then pop over to Paris for dinner and enjoy dessert in Japan. He can pass through walls and locked bank safes and enter the most forbidden chambers. So far, he has used his powers to run away from his past, to take advantage of unlimited wealth, to remain fiercely independent. He’s never known limits or boundaries or consequences. Or true connection. Until now. When he discovers another young man like himself, a fiery, globetrotting rebel named Griffin, the truth dawns on him. He's a genetic anomaly known as a 'Jumper', and he isn't safe. Stars Hayden Christensen, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson, Diane Lane, Samuel L Jackson & Michael Rooker. Spectacular scenery, stunts & SFX. Recommended. 3 STARS."

Between 1968 and 1972, nine American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon, and 12 men walked upon its surface. They remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON brings together for the first, and possibly the last, time surviving crew members from every single Apollo mission that flew to the Moon, and allows them to tell their story in their own words. This riveting first-hand testimony is interwoven with visually stunning archival material which has been re-mastered from the original NASA film footage - much of it never used before. The result is an intimate epic that vividly communicates the daring, the danger, the pride, and the promise of this extraordinary era in history when the whole world literally looked up at America. The producers Duncan Copp and Chris Riley spent many weeks in the NASA film library examining cans of film some of which had not been opened for over THIRTY years. This search uncovered many gems, astonishing space shots which have been re-mastered from the original film rolls to reveal the Apollo program with a visual clarity and impact it has never had before. 4 1/2 STARS.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore, watch helplessly as their home is chopped down by a Christmas tree company. Still inside, the tree is shipped off to the lobby of Jett Records, helmed by Ian Hawk. Ian is a former college roommate of Dave Seville, a down on his luck musician and songwriter who has never given up hope for making a successful career out of his quirky musical sensibilities. When Dave goes to Jett Records to pitch Ian a new song, he is rudely booted out of the offices. Taking a basket of muffins as consolation, he wanders past the Christmas tree being installed in the lobby. The Chipmunks, smelling the tasty muffins, jump in the basket and hey presto, they are soon in their new home. Despite his misgivings about his new tenants, Dave seizes the opportunity to put together his songwriting skills with the 'Munks' unique talents. Their first collaboration, "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)" becomes an overnight sensation, propelling the Chipmunks to superstardom. But at what price? Good fun if you are the parent of younger children looking for something worthwhile seeing on a family day out.
Renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin believes only in what he can see with his own two eyes. But after a string of bestsellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he has no real proof of life after life. Having just debunked The Weeping Willow Inn and completed a rather poorly attended book signing Mike is looking for his next challenge. It comes in the form of a postcard from New York and the warning, don't enter room 1408. Enslin’s phantom free run of long, lonely nights changes forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms". Defying the warnings of the hotel manager Gerald Olin, the author becomes the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room despite the fact that 56 people have died in 1408. Another bestseller may be imminent, but Enslin must go from skeptic to true believer, confront his demons and survive for sixty minutes in the room from hell. John Cusack's performance anchors this conversion of a Stephen King short story. Co-stars Samuel L Jackson & Mary McCormack. 3 1/2 STARS.
He was bred from the world’s deadliest criminals, but raised by an exiled brotherhood of the Church. His very existence seems to be a sin, but he wages a quiet war to rid the world of evil. He’s brilliant, charismatic and charming, yet reveals little about himself, has no name, and is known only by the last two digits of a barcode tattooed on the back of his head. A genetically engineered, elite assassin known only as Agent 47, his hallmarks are a lethal grace, unwavering precision, and resolute pride in his work. But even 47 couldn't anticipate a "random equation" in his life: the unexpected stirrings of his conscience and the unfamiliar emotions aroused in him by a mysterious Russian woman he meets when he is called upon to eliminate a high ranking Russian politician. Ordered to kill the man in a public place, he believes his shot, taken from four kilometres away was true. It seems it wasn't. Stars Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott and Olga Kurylenko as Nika. Worth a look at. 3 STARS.
For Austin’s hottest DJ, Jungle Julia, dusk offers an opportunity to unwind with two of her closest friends, Shanna and Arlene. This three fox posse sets out into the night, turning heads from Guero’s to the Texas Chili Parlor. Not all of the attention is innocent: Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike, a scarred, weathered rebel who leers from behind the wheel of his muscle car. As the girls settle into their beers, Mike’s weapon, a white-hot juggernaut, revs just feet away. Not far away, Kick-ass Kim eagerly awaits the arrival of fellow movie stunt chick Zoe for a holiday in the US. Alongside Abernathy, the movie make-up artist, and Lee a cheerleader-costume clad actress; the sassy foursome set off to welcome New Zealander Zoe to the US by treating her to whatever she likes, USA style. Being the adrenalin junky Zoe is, she chooses to spend the day riding 'shot-gun' on a white 1970s Dodge Challenger. Imagine the girls surprise when they meet Mike on the same stretch of highway. Surprise soon turns to horror. The girls, the stunts, the soundtrack and the grainy filming all work well, but not well enough. More action and less talk would have made this a must see. Huge cast includes Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, Jordan Ladd, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Kurt Russell and Zoë Bell are the standouts. 2 1/2 STARS.
From the time he was a child, Charles Farmer had only one goal: to become a US astronaut. Earning his degree in aerospace engineering and joining the Air Force as a pilot, Farmer was a natural for NASA’s astronaut training program and was well on his way when a family situation forced him to drop out and return home. The move effectively ended his career. But Farmer was not a man to let anything stand in the way of a dream. He spent the next decade and every cent he had building his own rocket in a barn on his ranch in Story, Texas, working toward the day when he could triumphantly launch it into space. By himself. On the eve of the long-anticipated launch, an unexpected problem arises. Farmer’s efforts to secure 10,000 pounds of high-grade fuel catch the attention of the FBI. The last thing the FBI and N.A.S.A want is a private individual entering the space race. Then the media arrive. Will Charles Farmer make it into space? Out on DVD now. Recommended. 3 1/2 STARS.

Orlando, Florida with its ten-million dollar mansions set ten feet apart may as well be the moon for Iowa-native Jake. Here the privileged teenagers of this American Dream on steroids want for nothing; they zoom around upscale neighborhoods in expensive cars, wearing bikinis and flip-flops, affecting the jaded ennui of kids with too much, too soon. Life is one big party for them. Jake was a star athlete on the football team back home, but in this new city he is an outsider. Considered 'the new kid' with his taciturn attitude and lumberjack attire, Jake’s not winning friends anytime soon, and that’s OK with him. Quiet and withdrawn, he’s silently suffering from the recent loss of his father. It’s not long, however, before Jake’s troubled past re-emerges when a clip of a spectacular football-field fist fight from Iowa is forwarded around his new school. Later, at a party, he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McCarthy. Defeated and humiliated, he turns to mixed martial arts instructor Jean Roqua. This action packed, testosterone charged film features spectacular fight sequences. Recommended to 'action genre' fans. 3 1/2 STARS.
On the fifteenth of May, in the jungle of Nool, in the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool. He was splashing, enjoying the jungle's great joys. Then Horton the elephant heard a small noise. A faint cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Although Horton doesn't know it yet, that speck houses an entire city named Who-ville, inhabited by the microscopic Whos, led by the Mayor. Despite being ridiculed and threatened by his neighbors, who think he has lost is mind, Horton is determined to save the particle, because "a person's a person, no matter how small." Horton's eight-word explanation for his actions embodies an idea both simple and profound adding more food for thought when Horton has to explain to his skeptical friends: "If you were way out in space, and you looked down at where we live, we would look like a speck." Horton is determined to save Whoville. Exceptional voice cast led by Jim Carrey. A must for all Dr Seuss fans. Excellent! 4 1/2 STARS.
Two sisters, Anne and Mary Boleyn, are driven by their ambitious father and uncle to advance the family’s power and status by courting the affections of the king of England, Henry VIII. Leaving behind the simplicity of country life, the girls are thrust into the dangerous and thrilling world of court life, and what began as a bid to help their family develops into a ruthless rivalry between Anne and Mary for the love of the king, who's wife Katherine of Aragon is out of favour, unable to produce an heir to the throne. Initially, Mary wins King Henry’s favor and becomes his mistress, bearing him an illegitimate child. But Anne, clever, conniving, fearless and ambitious, edges aside both her sister and Henry’s disgruntled wife, in her relentless pursuit of the king. Despite Mary’s genuine feelings for Henry, Anne has her sights set on the ultimate prize and will not stop until she is Queen of England. Outstanding performances from Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are the feature of this film. 4 STARS.

At each encounter the group is joined by other tribes who have been attacked by the slave raiders, turning D’Leh’s once-small band into an army. Driven by destiny, the unlikely warriors must battle prehistoric predators while braving the harshest elements. At their heroic journey’s end, they uncover a lost civilization. Here they will take their stand against a tyrannical god who has brutally enslaved their own. Mankind's destiny is in their hands. Life is about to change for sixteen year old Juno. Three home pregnancy test kits confirm her worst fear, that she is pregnant after a trip into the arms of her best friend Paulie Bleeker. It may have been a one night adventure but Juno's actions will have a profound effect on, not only her life, but those around her. The quirky, precocious, wise-cracking Juno, who is not just the delivery system for her child, but also the mouthpiece for wry observations in a language all her own, quickly discovers being pregnant will force her to grow up fast. The biggest decision is that she won't be keeping her baby, instead she opts for placing her child with a family who will treasure having a child of their own. Juno settles for Mark and Vanessa Loring, an affluent suburban couple who are longing to adopt their first child. With her supportive father, Juno sets out to size up the prospective adoptive parents. Ellen Page gives a performance that is worthy of an Oscar nomination. Very recommended. 4 1/2 STARS.
