One of my favourite memories from my teenage years was those nights spent away from home at my grand parents house in Westbourne Park. In those days the trams still ran down Goodwood Road, the place to be on a saturday night was still the Drive In Theartre, television was full of exciting black and white images and the local picture theatres were, in the main, becoming Tom the Cheap supermarkets. Life was changing at a frantic pace in those days. The Beatles would come to Adelaide bringing the city to a grinding stop, thursday night was Princeton Club with Big Bob Francis and a cultural revolution was slowly starting with the dining habits of most australians. A tradition of meat, three vegies and a cup of tea would all change as an influx of migrants brought to our shores a wonderful variety of culinary styles that today we just take for granted. Pasta and Pizza was refered to as "wog food" and cappuccino was a word that most couldn't even pronounce let alone order. So where is this all leading to and wheres do my grandparents fit into this. Well I credit them with starting me on a
life long love of coffee. In the "good old days" a stay at Westbourne Park in the grand parents house was like a trip into wonderland. Both the milkman and the baker made deliveries in horse drawn carts and while grandma had an electric stove she still used the wood fired one in a cramped kitchen that was filled with a myriad of pungent smells that filled the air from first light till the late evening meal was finished
One of my favourite smells was that of Bickfords Coffee & Chicory Essence. A thick, black, treacle like substance it was my very first experience at drinking coffee. It was the highlight of a hearty cooked breakfast when grandma made me a cup of coffee topped up with condensed milk and I couldn't get enough of it. When instant coffee came on the scene the old Bickfords somehow lost popularity and is
now just one of many memories from a wonderful era. Over the years I had became, as many described me, "americanized" because of my love for coffee as I tried every style and variety that came on the supermarket shelf. A brief affair with perculated coffee, strong but sweet with cream please, was followed by the freeze dried experience, the decaf era & then the flavoured Jarrah coffees. Finally though I fell in love with the cappuccino and so began a coffee awakening that has provided me with many memorable experiences both good and bad. Some of the most enjoyable moments drinking coffee have been spent at ANG'S COFFEE and SPECIAL TEAS at the Marion Shopping Centre. Situated on the western ground floor level near Woolworths Supermarket this family run business comprising Michael, Angela, Angelo & Kerri Pezos provides one of lifes very best experiences at drinking coffees. Theres a wealth of experience here and it has all been put to good use when it comes to ensuring that every customer is treated with good coffee and service to match. The secret to good coffee is in the beans and Angelo knows just what it takes to produce the final product and it isn't chaep beans. He selects only the very best beans for both the "House " and the "Black Magic" blends. The taste is rich and smooth and each cappuccino comes topped with a creamy cap covered in real shaved chocolate. But there is
more to drinking coffee than just being tied down to the daily dose of cappuccino as I have quickly discovered at ANG'S. Here the variety is endless with Café Latte, Velvet Latte, Flat White, Mochachino, Hot Chocolate, Vienna Chocolate, Vienna Coffee, Long Black, Short Black, Double Short Black and Macciato. Then there are the flavoured varieties such as Irish Creme, Hazlenut & Vanilla to name just a few. All add to the variety of taste from your coffee no matter what style you like. But for
a real "special" treat ask Angelo to make you one of their "Long House Specials". This is the ultimate treat your self to something rich and decadent. Served in a latte` glass this long coffee comes with special flavoured syrups and a rich chocolate layer topped with whipped cream that is then lightly covered with shaved chocolate. My favourite is the Choc Jaffa made with Orange syrup and thick rich chocolate. Sounds just wicked doesn't it and worthy reward for any occassion you choose to spoil your self. ANG'S also stocks a wide range of coffee beans. In fact 45 types including Country of Origin, Speciality Blends, Certified Organic, chemical free Decaf beans and those 12 different flavoured coffee beans. If your down there with
the kids treat them to fabulous Iced Cold Milk Drinks made with Gelati and topped with cream. Choose from Iced Coffee, Mocha, Chocolate, Vanilla, Raspberry, Coconut & Hazelnut. Like all good cafe`s there is a delicious range of cakes, light meals and snacks to select from. So if you'd like to broaden your coffee taste or experience something new then drop into ANG'S and try coffee at its very best. I am sure that you will find it a pleasureable and exciting an experience as I have. You may just become one of their many regular customers.
