WORLD TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
APRIL 21ST 2000
TIMOR-VICTORIA
The South Pacific and World Veterans Championship series kicked off today with the running of the first event on the programme, the World Veterans Time Trial Championship. The series is centred at rural Maryborough just a picturesque two hours drive from the heart of Melbourne. Maryborough features prominently in the Central Goldfields Shire and offers many historic attractions and buildings. Once a major gold mining region there is much to see and do at a liesurely pace and within easy reach of the town. Surrounded by smaller villages and farms the area boasts all the modern facilities without detracting from its historic roots. Major supporter of the cycling event is the Central Goldfields Shire Council along with many of the local business's who contribute their resourses and funds. The five days of racing are under the control of the VVCC and organized by Geelong identity Ray Aldridge. Todays event was the start of a hectic shedule for riders competing in the series and was contested on a fifteen kilometre course with the start and finish at Timor, just a short eight kilometres from town.
The setting was ideal and conditions were pretty even for all riders while they were out on the course and offered no advantage to any group or individual competitor, making for some close results. The first rider was sent off on time at precisely 1:01 with the rest of the field leaving at one minute intervals. In all sixty five riders including six women competed in ten age divisions ranging from 35 to 75+ for men, while the women competed in one group of 30+. The event was well organized, run professionally and was a good start to the series.
