SOUTH PACIFIC ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP
The spoils of winning at Maryborough
MARYBOROUGH-VICTORIA
APRIL 23RD 2000
Big day today for competitors at the championships with the running of the road race events in the countryside around Maryborough. Another early start saw the first competitors the 35-39 division on the road at eight fourty five am. Next groups off were the 50-54 followed by the 40-44 and it wasn't long before the attacks got underway. The 50-54 division weren't hanging around and overtook the younger riders well before Dunolly. South Australias Peter Moore had gone on the attack early and faced a long haul to the finish but taking the wrong turn at Dunolly meant having to chase the bunch before going on the attack yet again. He managed to hold the pack off until around ten kilometres from home whenhe was caught by the bunch. At the end of a sharp rise David Sturt launched a timely attack and hung on to take the gold. Prior to this the 50-54 were heading for a bunch sprint, that was until Malcolm Clasohm launched himself off the front and issued a challenge that the bunch was unable to answer. In the 40-44 Peter Taylor and David Dennis had been on the attack earlier in the
and while Taylor had kept the pressure on in the end a breakaway group of three were caught around fifteen kilometres from home. This came down to a great sprint finish with the bunch hammering down Park Road. Terry Schintler had a handy little gap but Taylor threw everything at him in an effort to gain gold but Schintler had the legs to hold on. In the 45-49 division winner Marcus Coppock rode for one and a half hours on his own before Syd Carter & Shane Stanfield joined him and the three showed just how well a breakaway can work as none missed a turn to the finish line. For Coppock it was third time lucky as the three hit the line with the barest of margins seperating them. In the Ladies division there was to be no muching around with a breakaway of four working hard to get a gap, and get it they did. Pressure on the long climb saw a split as Kim Howard and Gillian Govan made a break. With Dangerfield unable to bridge the gap it went to a sprint won convincingly by Kim Howard. After the lunch break officials were back to see off the second part of the road races for the more mature riders. Crowd favourite Bill Dove proved too good in the 70-74 division as was Terry Wallace in the 60-64 division. That left just two races to complete and while all expectations were that Brian Long would pick up his first major, it was not to be his year as Jack Trickey drew on every morsel of energy to win the 65-69 division in fine style. That left only the 75+ mens to be sorted out and while winner Bill Mantova won by a proverbial mile the judges were left to pour over the video tapes to seperate second and third place-getters.
