This really is a gorgeous film and one that is not hindered by the fact that it is a foreign film nor that it has sub-titles. It's a generous film with a robust cast of eight women who are all glorious in their roles. It is hard to define who is the pick of the crop and if you can do it, then you're a hell of a lot smarter than the panel which decided to give the whole cast the European Actress of The Year Award. Each of the actresses is a delight to behind and "8 femmes" certainly allows them all many an opportunity to impress. In fact "8 femmes" is without a doubt, somewhat like those bon-bons we pull apart each Christmas. They tear apart with a loud crack to reveal a surprise hidden inside and without giving away the sensational surprises of "8 femmes" every one of the actresses character has such a surprise in store for the audience. "8 femmes" is full of surprises including the ultimate revelation of just who did kill Marcel. Amongst this scintillating cast are two actresses regular cinema-goers will recognize. The first is Catherine Deneuve the french bombshell who has honed her craft over a long career while making her mark not just in europe but world wide. The other is Isabelle Huppert who can be seen in the film R18+ film "The Piano Teacher". Like all the cast members they wickedly enjoy the clever deception provided by the script for there is never a clear cut clue as to who has bumped off poor old Marcel. What a tangled web "8 femmes" does weave, and one I dare you to try and unravel. The Story

It is Christmas, holiday time in the 50's and the French countryside is covered with crisp white snow. It should be a time of joy and celebration but the discovery that Marcel has been stabbed to death places all the women in the house under suspicion. There's Catherine a teenage girl who loved her papa, Suzon who has travelled home from studying in England, their mother Gaby who never reveals much and can appear emotionless, Grandma who is a boozer bound to her wheelchair, aunty Pierrette who somehow arrives after the murder has been committed, the two maids Louise and Chanel who couldn't lie straight in bed and then their is the aging virgin Augustine who is obviously off her rocker. She is Gaby's sister. Between these women there is not one true word to be spoken, or is there. Who has murdered poor old Marcel.
