The Story

Life on earth has changed since global warming beset planet earth. The sea levels have risen and low lying cities have been engulfed causing the population to shift and bringing many changes for mankind. Set in the future AI is a story about one mans search to produce a robot child that can bond to humans through the emotion of love. Pregnancies are monitored by the state and the world is divided into mecha's and fleshies. Struck by tragedy Monica & Henry Swinton are about to be thrown an emotional lifeline through Professor Hobby and Cybertronics Manufacturing in the form of the ultimate robotic child. A child with all the emotions of real humans. A child who can love. A child named David. Their own child is in a coma and they soon warm to David and through a sequence of prompt commands they bond to him. It's a one way journey from which there can be no going back. Any rejection of David by the Swintons will result in his destruction. All is going well until their son Martin regains conciousness and returns home. A sibling rivalry evolves with tragic results. David is abandoned by Monica to start a journey of discovery. A journey of self discovery and the truth about his birth and to rediscover his mother. It is a journey fraught with much danger but one he must undertake to survive.
Insight
Much has been said about the achievements of Spielberg and it is reasonable to expect that AI would be another great epic. In many ways there is a lot of magic in AI but this is a long winded, very drawn out journey, not only for David [Haley Joel Osment] but also the audience. It starts with a real brilliance and then ends up dragging it's feet at a terrible pace. The story disintergrates from high class cinema to self indulgent fantasy that destroys the character and integrity of what could have, and what should have been, a wonderful experience with limitless grandeur for cinema audiences. Instead of holding the audience spellbound by its magic, AI goes off the rail and changes the mood from one of captivation to plain restlessness and irritation. The only saving grace for "AI" [if it can be seen that way] are the performances of three people who are credible and very talented. First there is Haley Joel Osment who just goes from strength to strength. He captures the heart, mind and soul of the audience with ease. This is the third of a big three for Osment commencing with "Sixth Sense", "Pay it Forward" and now "AI". Then there is Jude Law as Gigolo Joe a complete departure from his previously acclaimed roles in "Enemy at the Gates", "The Talented Mr Ripley", "In the Garden of Good and Evil". These followed his debut in "Gattaca". Law attacks the role of the love machine robot with adventure and flair that overpowers the audience. Last but not least, Francis O'Connor is a gem as the emotionally destroyed mother Monica Swinton who hangs on to the thread of hope that her son will one day come home. A star of stage, screen and television, O'Conner has endeared her self to movie fans with performances that gained critical acclaim such as "Kiss or Kill", "Mansfield Park" and "A little bit of Soul". She too is wonderful to watch onscreen in AI. The graphics and special effects coupled to John Williams music score are first class but all this can not underpin the end result which is very far from satisfying and undoes all the prior greatness of "AI".
The Verdict
Starts with a bang and ends in a longwinded whimper. A tiresome journey into stupidity ... RATED MA15+
