At A Glance
At a glance a lot of people might just pass this one over. Bit of a pity if they do though. Look, this isn't "must see", nor is it massive got to go stuff, but "A Man Apart" is a lot of fun and it's certainly worth the price of your admission ticket. Vin Diesel ["XXX", "Knockaround Guys", "The Fast and The Furious"], teams up with Larenz Tate ["Menace II Society", "Biker Boyz", "The Postman"] in this energy charged, action packed tale about a DEA agents battle with a drug lord [named 'Diablo'] after his wife is murdered in an attempt on his life. Both Sean Vetter [Vin Diesel} and Demetrius Hicks [Larenz tate] grew up cutting their teeth on the mean streets of LA. They have both chosen the right path, the side of the law. It all falls apart when Sean places vengence before the law. Its a test of true friendship and loyalty.
According to Vin Diesel
"At a young age, Sean and Demetrius sought to create their own family, something they could depend on and rely on through life. They both left the street together to work for the right side of the law." Adding, "They got all the accolades and thought they could finally rest, only to find out that the world and that experience [the big drug bust] would come back to find Vetter in what he thought would have been his sanctuary, what he thought would have been a safe place." It certainly tests their friendship.
Larenz Tate
explains. "Demetrius has to make sure that Sean doesn't go off the deep end and get himself killed." "They're both after Diablo, but the way Seans going after him is just completely rogue. So Demetrius tries to keep him focused even through the pain and harsh memories of the things that have happened to him. To have someone believable in the role of Sean Vetter was a must and on all counts Vin Diesel fitted the bill. Director F Gary Gray notes that Diesel has a special appeal as both a blue collar hero and a movie star. "He has the best of both worlds," says Gray.
Producer Joseph Nittolo
of Nittolo Entertainment thought so as did fellow producers Tucker Tooley and Vincent Newman of Newman Tooley Films. "We thought Vin would be perfect for it,"says Nittolo. And Vin brought the realism we were looking for and a whole lot of depth." "The character of Vetter required somebody to be believable as a law enforcement officer, but also someone who could be credible in the inner city, as someone who grew up on the streets," adds Newman. "There aren't a lot of actors who have that credibility, but Vin has all that." The producers certainly knew who they were looking for.
Director F Gary Gray
was the producers first choice to direct the film. "Gary is a great shooter, he has an amazing eye, and really knows his craft. He's committed and passionate, and he brought that with him to the set every day, ultimately making the film grander in scale," enthuses producer Tucker Tooley.
With those comments, it would appear "A Man Apart" should provide good entertainment. My opinion is "it does". If you like buddy action films, an explosive story line then "A Man Apart" should prove a worthwhile experience and give you your monies worth.
The Story
The DEA has taken its fight right up to the drug lord. This time they're hitting them on their own turf, Mexico. Thanks to Sean Vetter, the DEA now have notorious Baja Cartel kingpin Memo Lucero locked away behind bars. It's a real coup for the law enforcement team known as "the gunslingers", but their celebrations are short lived. A team of hitmen are sent to Vetters home. They miss him but kill his wife. And their troubles don't end there. A new, ruthless drug lord by the name of 'Diablo' has taken over the old operations. But Sean Vetter has a problem. He's letting vengence get in the way of the job. It's jepoardizing the safety of his men. Easier said than done. Now Vetter is a loose cannon. He wants to go renegade and make the fight real personal.
The Verdict
"It ain't no "XXX" but who cares. There's enough action, exploding cars, firepower, drug dealers goin down and violence to satisfy Vin Diesel fans and anyone who loves a rip snortin tale. "A Man Apart" will certainly give you your monies worth. Good, solid Diesel fun. "A Man Apart" is definately worth having a good look at."
