Dr Ben Sobel examines Paul Vitti in the Sing Sing Prison
Those madcap comedians who left us laughing with "Analyze This" are back again. Yes Billy Crystal & Robert De Nero are back on the screen again in the follow-up sequal to their smash hit, with a second look at the lives of psychotherapist Ben Sobels [Billy Crystal] and crime boss Paul Vitti [Robert De Nero]. There is nothing harder in the film industry than producing a sequal with all the appeal and success of an original. Many have tried and many have failed. In the USA "Analyze That" received a decidedly cold reception from many critics, and you know how many people take notice of critics, now don't you? In Australia, we are far more forgiving and so it was I went along to have a look at "Analyze That" at its first evening session of the summer break [heck I'm even sounding like a yank]. With no media screening for this film I invited a few of friends along to check it out. As I said, aussie cinema-goers are more forgiving and the small but vocal audience was having a damn good time. Now let me point out that the small audiences can not be attributed to or should reflect in anyway on your decision to see this film after all, "8 Mile" was on its opening night and the line at the ticket box stretch out the doors for a sold out session. So, is "Analyze That" worth a look at. Yeh, why not. There are a lot of laughs to be gotten from the pacey script and De Niro and Crystal do work well together. But, and here is a little but, if you're 'language shy' watch out, because there's a profuse use of the dreaded 'F' word splashed liberally throughout the dialogue. "Analyze That" is a pleasant diversion from the summer heat and if your a big fan of either De Niro or Crystal, what the heck, you're gonna luv it anyway. And yes, there's enough laughs to warrant the admission price. "Analyze That" also features Lisa Kudrow, Joe Viterelli, Cathy Moriarty and Frank Gio as 'Lou the Wrench'. "Analyze That" is directed by Harold Ramis who also wrote the script. Ramis first came to notice in 1974 when he moved to New York where he wrote for and appeared in "The National Lampoon Show" with John Belushi and Bill Murray. He went on to co-write the huge hit "National lampoons Animal House" and then wrote for "Ghost Busters 1 & 2" and "Stripes" in which he also co-starred.

Cathy Moriarty and Robert De Niro in Analyze That
"Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal made a surprisingly good comedy team in Analyze This."
Loey Lockerby KANSAS CITY STAR
Crime boss Paul Vitti [Robert De Niro] is about to come up for parole. Trouble is, someone is gunning for him and I mean gunning for him. It seems someone wants him dead. They don't want him leaving Sing Sing Prison alive. The strain proves too much for Vitti and he finally cracks up under the pressure. Now he's passing time in the prisons padded cell singing an performing as though he's starring in "West Side Story". The FBI are monitoring his every move. There's only one way to find out if he really has cracked up. His old psychotherapist Ben Sobel [Billy Crystal] is given the job of getting his former client back in the real world. But Ben is grieving the loss of his dearly departed father and he's a bit of a mess. It's going to get messy, because the FBI have decided to release Vitti in Sobels custody. That is going to make a lot of people unhappy. Very unhappy.
The Verdict
"In many ways this is better than the original. Billy Crystal, Robert De Niro and Liza Kudrow reprise their roles from "Analyze This" continuing the saga of crime boss Paul Vitta and his relationship with his psychotherapist Ben Sobel. And yes, there's enough laughs and classic moments to warrant the admission price."

What The Critics Say
"A pretty funny movie, with most of the humor coming, as before, from the incongruous but chemically perfect teaming of Crystal and De Niro."
Shirley Sealy FILM JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL
"Although the level of the comedy declines as the movie proceeds, there's no denying the fun of watching De Niro and Crystal having fun."
Susan Stark DETROIT NEWS
"Although the laughs come regularly and often, the movie suffers from a bad case of sequelitis, and the script wanders aimlessly from joke to joke."
Steve Rhodes STEVE RHODES' INTERNET REVIEWS
"Yes, the script has holes you could drive a truck through, but Crystal and De Niro's verbal pingpong makes it all worthwhile."
Sue Pierman MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL
"An interesting animal: a sequel that's a successful rehash of its predecessor."
Eugene Novikov ULTIMATE MOVIES!
"Analyze That is successful, thanks almost entirely to the efforts of Crystal and De Niro"
