"There's no doubt about it - you can always back Jack. If ever there were questions about the value of watching Jack Nicholson, it has been extinguished here. With a unique , indulgent, virtuoso performance he again proves he is the screens most watchable actor."
Stan James THE ADELAIDE ADVERTISER
"It's chiefly the sight of Jack Nicholson slumming it as Adam Sandler's live-in anger management counsellor that makes this otherwise disposable Sandler comedy programmer passable. Spiced by a large number of cameos, Sandler plays a wimpy boyfriend to Marisa Tomei who has to submit to Nicholson's tutelage after an incident on an airliner. "
Jim Schembri THE AGE
"Enduring this film was an experiment in anger management for me."
MaryAnn Johanson FLICK FILOSOPHER
"Anger Management plays the same tune too much of the time to live up to its potential. Still, it's good for a giggle."
Tom Long DETROIT NEWS
"Anger Management is not going to go down in history as a comedy classic, but it should generate great box office numbers and its broad approach will appeal to Sandler's loyal fan base."
Paul Clinton CNN
"After several months of lame comedies like Head of State and Bringing Down the House, there's no denying that it was an incredible relief to watch a film that was just entertaining."
David Nusair REEL FILM REVIEWS
"Though Management might be the comedian’s most mainstream effort to date, the end result is still very much an Adam Sandler comedy."
Sean O'Connell ECLIPSE MAGAZINE
"Like so many Sandler vehicles, the movie isn’t actually funny, but keeps feeling as if it should be."
John Powers LA WEEKLY
"Sandler is terrific, playing a potentially over-the-top part with an understatement that's downright minimalist at times."
David Sterritt CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR
"Leave it to Sandler and Nicholson to make this movie worth more than the price of admission."
Phil Villarreal ARIZONA DAILY STAR
"A comedy as bracing and furiously right for the moment as it is broad and huggable."
Lisa Schwarzbaum ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
"Where Punch-Drunk Love emphasized incongruous romance, Management highlights bizarre comedy much the same way it was achieved in Planes, Trains & Automobiles."
Jon Popick PLANET SICK-BOY
At A Glance
There's no doubting that as far as "Anger Management" goes there is only one star and that is the inimitable Jack Nicholson. Jack is the master of those wickedly crazy roles and here in "Anger Management" he is at his exemplary best. From under his bright and glorious performance as the seemingly mad, half crazy, lunatic Dr Buddy Rydell, other stars try to rise to the occassion, alas their light is feeble compared to this super-nova, this blinding display of awesome ability from Jack the master. Oh yes there are other 'big names here including Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei, John C Reilly, Woody Harrelson, Heather Graham and of course Adam Sandler, but to be honest, Jack makes them look like rank amateurs in his presence. Unfortunately Nicholsons persona is so powerful that in those scenes where he is missing, "Anger Management" becomes very dull and it's not as if the supporting actors don't try their darndest to put in a 100%, its just that there really is [with the exception of an appearance by Woody Harrelson as a transvestite prostitute] little else to crow about. One might go so far as to say that in all the insanity of "Anger Management" Nicholsons Buddy Rydell appears at times to be the most sane of all the characters. That's due to the massive amount of lunacy packed into "Anger Management". There's Luiz Guzmán camping it up as an angry gay man in a black knit singlet, Heather Graham stripping to her underwear, Woody Harrelson working the pavements in drag, John C Reilly as a bad bully boy turned Budhist Monk and Adam Sandler as the mild mannered young man Dave, harbouring latent anger and repressed resentment from his childhood days. To this list add John Turturro who starred with Sandler in the very funny "Mr Deeds" in which, even though Sandler was not funny, Turturros performance as Emilio Lopez [that silly butler] brought joy to all who watched.
The Story
To those around him Dave Buznik [Adam Sandler] appears a meek and mild Mr Nice Guy. Everyone it seems pushes him around and uses him up, well everyone except his faithful girlfriend Linda [Marisa Tomei]. Nothing much changes in life for Dave, he still hates kissing in public and he still can't stand up for himself when it comes to dealing with the boss. Until that fateful day when, while on an airline flight he makes a simple request. When the flight attendant ignores him, meek little Dave politely asks again, but to no avail. His second and third attempts to get a bit of service fall on deaf ears. But then a simple mistake lands Dave in big trouble. He's subdued by an air marshall and then charged with inflight rage. Now Dave is in big trouble because he being placed in the hands of someone who may just be a lunatic. Doctor Buddy Rydell [Jack Nicholson] anger management specialist is now in charge of his life and it aint a pretty sight. Dave it seems is stuck with this looney tooney Doctor and his psycho patients. The good doctors methods are wierd to say the least and Dave is starting to panic. Big time!
The Verdict
"A highly entertaining symphony of silliness led by the chief looney Jack Nicholson. It is Nicholsons presence which lifts "Anger Management" and the audiences spirit every time the madcap anger management specialist Dr Buddy Rydel appears on the screen. It may have been meant to be an Adam Sandler film but in reality this is another opportunity to see the great Nicholson at his shining best. Not to be missed for that reason alone."
