"It's unnerving, stimulating, likely to provoke anger and sorrow on both political sides and, above all, it's extremely funny."

Those who have seen Micheal Moore on SBS television will understand that while he may appear at times a little bit radical, he has a big heart and a lot of guts. The latter certainly shows through in his latest film "Bowling For Columbine". Let's face it, you'd have to have a hell of a lot of guts and may I say determination to take on the gun lobby, the government and to so bluntly question the involvement of the US government in the affairs of other countries at a time when they are preparing to go to war. But that's Moores style and it works well in "Bowling For Columbine". Dubbed a radical leftist activist Moore questions America's values, their welfare system, their obsessions with guns, the spiralling murder rate, the massacres and the insensitive actions of the NRA led by actor Charlton Heston. Moore is at his vitiolic best here as he cuts the gun lobby down to size. His interview with Charlton Heston is worth the admission price alone. Moore has chosen the massacre at Columbine High as the central theme for this film and while he is quite caustic at times he also reveals he has a sensistive side when dealing with the tragedy which rocked the US. Moore is also clever enough to use his talent for raising a laugh no matter what the subject and there are, I am pleased to say, some very funny moments in "Bowling For Columbine". Moore runs us through a series of emotional wormholes, testing us, forcing us to question our values, one minute tossing our emotions around like a cork on a stormy sea the next soothing us with his self assured charm and wit. It's a style that has won him a multitude of fans world-wide and "Bowling For Columbine" will certainly win him a heap more. At a time when the world appears to be beset by violence few dare stand up in the public arena and voice what many of us feel when it comes to violence and guns. Here in 'the lucky country' we have had our share of gun massacres including one of the world's most infamous incidents at Port Arthur. Another recent incident has now forced us to realize that the gun buy back scheme wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Now the government has been forced to crackdown on handguns too. I mention this because some people may be ignorant enough to think that only the US has a problem with guns. Sure it is far worse than anywhere else in the western world [unless you are in a war zone] but there would be few countries which have not had some sort of a firearm incident.
The Story
"This is a bold, blackly comic masterpiece -- everyone should see it."
Nev Pierce BBCI FILMS
"Bowling For Columbine should be required viewing for teenagers."
Margaret A McGurk CINCINNATI ENQUIRER
Americas obsession with guns is given a thorough airing in Michael Moores "Bowling For Columbine". Moore has Charlton Heston and the NRA in his sights and like a terrier latched on to an ankle he is hard to shake off. With around 11,000 people killed each year in the USA the subject is far from a laughing matter yet somehow, Moore manages to turn the blackest of moments around raising many a chuckle without becoming offensive. Known for his tenacious and hard hitting style of journalism this is Moore at his best exploring the psyche of the nation, its love of guns, its meddling in foreign affairs, corporate manipulation and a failing welfare system. From a bank that offers a free gun to every new customer to Canada where people leave their doors unlocked Moore introduces us to a myriad of colorful characters in this, his latest quest to find the truth.
The Verdict
"Michael Moore's "Bowling For Columbine" provides a valuable insight into the American psyche. It is a thought provoking expose` of the worst of american values. Laced with the blackest of humour "Bowling For Columbine" is a film not to be taken lightly and one you should not miss seeing. A whacky, wonderful film."
What The Critics Say
"Number one - with a bullet. The Last Temptation of Charleton. All politics aside, this is a fantastically made film."
Karina Montgomery CINERINA
"Moore provides an invaluable service by sparking debate and encouraging thought. Better still, he does all of this, and more, while remaining one of the most savagely hilarious social critics this side of Jonathan Swift."
