The Story
George Jung is determined to never end up like his father. He's promised himself that he'll never work as hard, always have more and he doesn't care how he does it, as long as he achieves his goal. And for many years Jung does thanks to america's craving for drugs. It's the freedom years, the 60's in the USA, a time of love and experimentation on the body and mind. Thanks to a savvy George Jung they are able to experience new found pleasures that have led to the decay of a society through drug abuse. Jung started with grass and graduated to cocaine. Along the way he was sought by the FBI, disgraced, beaten, double crossed and sold out by his partners. From California to Mexico and on to Columbia, Jorg [Johnny Depp] takes us to a world many have never seen, From the highest highs to the lowest lows, Jung proceeds at break neck speed to destruction as the drugs and money flow until we meet him at the very end, a lonely man, isolated in a prison serving a 60 year term. To most viewers it is just reward for his life of feeding americans hard drugs but in some ways it will most probably make Jung a bit of a folk hero and gain him much sympathy. "Blow" has been described as "Smart, Sexy, Funny and Dangerous" by Rolling Stone Magazine, add to that pathetic, wasted, degrading, out of control and you have all the emotional gauntlets that "Blow" will throw in your face.
Insight
"Blow" runs as smoothly across the screen as a single malt scoth whisky runs past the taste buds. This is a film without a glich, so effortless and so rewarding. Sure drugs aren't everyones cup of tea because that doesn't make "Blow" any the less entertaining. Depp is damn good as Jung and Cruz is easy to hate in her role as Mirtha Jung. "Blow" is a real craftsmans effort and its works well by dotting every "i" and crossing every "T" allowing the actors freedom to work their respective roles to the hilt. One of hollywoods most understated actors Ray Liotta is solid as a rock playing Jungs father Fred while Rachel Griffith abley portrays the inconsistentcy of a flighty mother who is full of contradiction and torment both for herself and her only son. There is plenty to enjoy amongst the onscreen characters including that of the gay hairdresser Derek Foreal played by Paul Reubens [aka Pee Wee Herman]. The transformation of the main players as they progress through life is handled well. Their change of fortune, the loss of an empire, the years of drug sniffing and indulgence all take their toll and while the pitiful demise of Jung is tragic it produces some comedy as they go from designer clothes to cheap tracksuits and footwear. Jung suffered the fate of being used by fellow drug dealers who gave him up so they would be able to plea bargain. George Jung remains in prison to this day and will not be released until 2015. Depp has met with Jung in prison on a number of occassions to absorb as much of the mans character as possible. He was given an insight into a man who didn't see himself as a criminal but rather as "a modern day pirate". "I felt responsible to George Jung because, bless him, he's in a prison cell .....It's an exciting moment when you feel yourself moving and talking like another person. Thats the most exciting thing to me."
