Insight
Cast members with that limo
Oh me, oh my! Kids, what ever you do, don't tell the oldies about this one, they'll be having a heart attack. It's outrageous, it's every parents nightmare and it's all about "Schoolies Week', that annual event which sees around 70,000 kids heading for the Gold Coast at terms end each year for one hell of a rage. But rather than focussing on the actual week "Blurred" cleverly takes us on a journey with those who are travelling to the Gold Coast. For some like farm-boys Calvin [Mark Priestley] and Wayne [Travis Cotton] it's more than an adventure, it becomes a nightmare after their Holden is put out of commission and they are forced to hitch-hike to the Gold Coast. Their run-in with the 'Pigman' [Damien Garvey] provides some hilarious moments. Then there's Yolanda [Petra Yared] and Amanda [Charlotte Rees] who are travelling by 'limo' with chauffer Mason [Matthew Newton]. The further they travell the more pissed they get, the more adventureous they get, the hornier they get. Mason may think he's onto a good thing here, but is he? Next meet the bus crew, Lynette [Veronica Sywak], Danny [Kristian Schmid] and Pete [Craig Horner]. They're about to have a run-in with a pissed off bus driver [Kevin Hides] which will result in them being dumped on the side of the highway. Meanwhile there are those who have chosen the train trip. Bradley [Tony Brockman] wants to break up with his girlfriend Jillian [Jessica Gower] because (a) all his mates are doing it and (b) because he wants to be 'doing it' with all the chicks he can during 'Schoolies Week'. Jillian is not impressed. She decides to jump train with Zack [Jamie Croft] and have sex with this naive virgin just to pay out Bradley. Meanwhile, down on the Gold Coast, Freda [Nathalie Roy] is holding the fort in an appartment provided by Mum [Caroline Kennison] and, she ain't doin to good a job of it. All these characters combine to create some very funny and poignant moments on screen. Sure there's some attempted sex and a bit of booze, but really folks, "Blurred" is pretty harmless stuff. The production crew have cleverly focussed on the fun and adventure of getting there, rather than the actual event on the Gold Coast. It works well. Stephen Davis explained "We thought it would be far more interesting to write about the expectation of the journey to schoolies, as oppossed to schoolies itself." "It's that whole thing of party stuff where sometimes it's far more exciting getting dressed and going to the party than the actual party itself." On this point I agree and that shows on screen. Producer Chris Brown added "blurred is about the journey, it's not about the event. It's about movement, it's about change, it's all about the end of your school life and about the point where you start to become an adult. The film is about that limbo land." Writer Kier Shorey explained "Everyone gets to have an experience. It's just that the experience never quite turns out the way they think it will."
The Story
Those infamous guys next door known as The Balcony Boys
It doesn't matter how you get there, just get there. It's the end of term, end of year and the senior students are heading for Queenslands Gold Coast to let their hair down and have one hell of a time. It's 'Schoolies Week' and that means booze, chicks, raging and sex. But first you have to get there. For some it's simple, but for a few students it's a complicated journey that will become an adventure in itself. So jump a bus, hire a limo, crank up the station wagon because it doesn't matter how you're travelling as long as you're heading for the Gold Coast and the biggest week on the calendar, 'Schoolies Week'.
The Verdict
"This is one film the teens will find no trouble relating to, especially those year twelve students looking to the end of another school year and the chance to let it all out. 'Schoolies Week' is now an idelible part of the Australian culture. Rather than trying to depict the actual week on the Gold Coast "Blurred" cleverly takes in the adventure of getting there. It's all good, clean, fun and very, very teen orientated. "Blurred" is one the older teens will love!"
The farm boys minus their Holden. Calvin & Wayne are Gold Coast bound. They may not be students but they are after the chicks
