Insight
Frank W Abagnale Jnr [Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Frank W Abagnale Jnr in the wickedly delightful Catch Me If You Can
Steven Spielberg, John Williams, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio join forces to recreate the true life story of one Frank W Abagnale Jnr in the vibrantly wicked "Catch Me If You Can" the film which everyone is talking about. How good is "Catch Me If You Can"? Damn good! If you've seen the trailer screening at your local cinema then just multiply that ten times over and you'll get an idea of the buzz this film will give audiences. "Catch Me If You Can" is as large as life and where ever you look, there larger than life is Frank W Abagnale Jnr played with great vigour and energy by Leonardo DiCaprio ["Titanic", "The Beach", "While Eating Gilbert Grape"] who is such a delight in this role. He [DiCaprio] comes across so well in this role its hard to believe he isn't Frank Jnr and that is what I feel epitomizes this film. It is totally believable. It is as though we are really in there watching Frank Jnr's life unfold. And what a fascinating tale it is. Of course there is a little 'hollywoodism' in the film but evidently Frank Jnr himself is most impressed with the finished product. But then there sure is a lot to be impressed with. Someone I'm always impressed with is Tom Hanks. Hell you have to have a lot of talent to run solo in a film such as "Cast Away", playing a character named Chuck Noland, a man who's only companion in isolation was a basketball! But Hanks has a huge talent and one that always shines. While there is no doubting the focus in "Catch Me If You Can" is Frank Jnr, Hanks is wonderfully understated as FBI Agent Carl Hanratty. He's always there, dogged, determined and on the job. Hanks character Hanratty, draws the opposite of emotions from an audience to that of DiCaprio's. DiCaprio feeds us an endless steam of adrenalin, keeping us on the edge. DiCaprio gets us excited, hyped up like a kid chock full of sugar and we become thrill junkies looking for the next rush of excitement. He takes us with him like a 'Pied Piper' playing and irresistable tune, we dance to his tune. We are in on the caper and DiCaprio brings out the Frank Jnr in all of us. And then there is Carl Hanratty. Poor, methodical, easily fooled, Mr Nice Guy Hanratty. It doesn't matter to us that Carl is behind the eight-ball, after all we don't want him to catch Frank Jnr. We are loving the high life and we don't want to give it up. We delight in Carl's folly when he entertains catching Frank Jnr. Hell, we're too smart for him. It's a pitiful role that of Carl Hanratty yet somehow in the hype of everything that is "Catch Me If You Can" we start to feel for Carl. Hell, most of us have had the wool pulled over our eyes at some time or another. Most of us are just hard working joes, many of us just plod along and who cares if 'the job' is the only thing in life some of us have! There's no doubting the class these two display in their respective roles, nor is there any doubting the emotional pull of "Catch Me If You Can." It's such a funfilled, exciting film to experience and one I might just venture to say borders on being down right brilliant?

The Story
Frank W Abagnale Jnr [Leonardo DiCaprio] is on the run. After a long chase, FBI Agent Carl Hanratty [Tom Hanks] is closing in on one of Americas most wanted criminals. Directed by three times Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, from Jeff Nathansons screenplay based on the book by Frank W Abagnale Jnr and Stan Redding, "Catch Me If You Can" is the story of Frank W Abagnale Jnr one of the worlds most masterful forgers who by the time he had reached the age of eighteen had impersonated a substitute teacher, worked as the senior doctor in charge of an Emergency Room medical team, worked as a co-pilot for Pan Am Airlines, recruited college girls as trainee airline hostess's, worked as a lawyer and cashed over US4 million dollars in bogus cheques he had brilliantly forged. But Agent Hanratty is dedicated to his capture in this real life story of "Catch Me If You Can".
The Verdict
"The words "Catch Me If You Can" will be on everyones lips this summer. DiCaprio will win you over as the brash young Frank Jnr while the consumate Hanks is as always a delight to watch. Spielberg with an eye to detail has crafted "Catch Me If You Can" into one 'wicked' film. A most impressionable, funtastic film."
