Insight
"Changing Lanes" is a story of power and how it can corrupt. "Changing Lanes" is a story about human nature. "Changing Lanes" is a story of survival using any means at your disposal. "Changing Lanes" is a showcase for both Samuel L Jackson and Ben Affleck. That reader says it all when it comes to "Changing Lanes". Well don't stop there, your thinking. Oh ... alright. Let's add a few more catchy little pieces to describe this classy piece of cinema. It's powerful! It's riveting! It forces you to take sides! It grabs you emotionally! It makes you want to get up and kick that smart arsed white honky lawyer Gavin Banek right in the backside. It bonds you with Doyle Gipson, a meek black man, a recovering alcoholic, an AA member, who is fighting to keep his wife and kids from moving interstate. A man who truly has changed, has beaten his demons and deseves another chance. But in the end, just as it seems we've had enough of Mr bloody smart arsed lawyer Banek as we can stand, we turn, as does the meek Gipson. We become hell bent on getting our own back. Nothing else matters. Now it's our turn to fight, to sink the boot in and to hell with the consequences! That's how powerful "Changing Lanes" is. This power comes from the passionate performances from "Changing Lanes" two stars. Afleck and Jackson capture a real life passion in "Changing Lanes". The mental battle, the wheeling and dealing, the marking out of their individual territories is akin to a passage of rights. The right to choose right over wrong. The right to choose beween being courteous or condescending. And the biggie, the right to survive at all costs and damn the consequences. In the end it all comes down to simply choosing right over wrong. Which brings me to this final statement on "Changing Lanes". It sucks you in beautifully and you will love it!
From the director of "Notting Hill" and "Persuasion" [Roger Michell], the producer of "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Iris" [Scott Rudin], comes this classy thriller starring Academy Award winner Ben Afleck, BAFTA Award winner Samuel L Jackson, Academy Award winner & BAFTA winner William Hurt and Academy Award nominee Toni Collette as Gavin Banek's legal secretary. Paramount Pictures presents "Changing Lanes".
The Story
A minor incident on the freeway will escalate into a battle of survival for two men. Gavin Banek [ Ben Affleck ] is a lawyer on the way up. Doyle Gipson [ Samuel L Jackson ] is a recovering alcoholic trying to keep his family together. Both are heading for the same Courthouse but for vastly different reasons. When Banek offers a blank cheque to Gipson the insurance worker refuses. He wants things done the right way. Banek is already running late, he fully realizes the court will not be impressed by a lack of respect. In his rush to leave the scene a most important document, central to his case, is accidently left with Gipson. Neither men realize what a powerful influence that document will have on both their lives. It will become the pawn in a battle of two wills, a battle of survival that will change both men in so many ways.
The Verdict
"The beauty of "Changing Lanes" is that it reveals the darker side of human nature with such stark realism. It challenges the viewer to take sides and we do. We become absorbed in the onscreen battle between these two men who are each fighting for their futures. "Changing Lanes" is a thrilling tale of survival. Top Shelf!!"
