Insight
There is one thing you can be assured of when you go to see an Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster. Forget reality and think improbability. Such is the case with "Collateral Dammage" and you know what? Who gives a damn. I'm getting a bit sick of those "critics" who tear these entertaining films apart on the flimsiest grounds or as if they have a special insight into the unreality [is that a real word?] and implausability of the plots. Who the heck cares! Wake up guys! There is a huge audience who gets its kicks out of the fact that when all else fails, it's Arnie to the rescue. It's their bit of escapism. We know its not real. Perhaps its time some of you guys woke up to it and got real yourselves. Like the old saying, "you don't have to watch, you can always turn it off [or in this case not even bother to turn up]. In the same way that Clint Eastwood allowed many the joy of escapism through Inspector Harry Callahan, good ols Arnie is now allowing audiences to do the same. We [yes that includes me] love it when he wins. We love it when he achieves the impossible. We love it when he dishes out his own brand of justice. We don't care how he does it, as long as he does it. We know he's just a lovable big hulk. We know that he can hardly string more tha two-three words together at a time. We know that if it was anyone else being hit by a shovel they'd have a broken back or worse. But not our Arnie. Arnie rises up out of the ashes [and the bad reviews] and hits those crooks right where it hurts the hardest. That's why audiences love him. Thats why audiences will love "Collateral Damage" and for no other reason than that. "Collateral Damage" is 108 minutes of action and thrills from go to whoa thanks to the Austrian super star Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Story
Gordy Brewer [Arnold Schwarzenegger], fireman, hero and all round good guy, is about to lose everything he loves. He's made arrangements with wife Anne [Lindsay Frost] to pickup their son Matt [Ethan Dampf] after she has taken him to a dental appointment. He's running late and arrives just a a terrorist bomb explodes killing his family in a deadly ball of flames and splintered glass. The prime suspect is a policeman. A policeman Gordy spoke to moments before the bomb went off. That policeman is the Columbian independence fighter known as "El Lobo" [Cliff Curtis] The Wolf. He has decided that his people must bring to the americans the same terror and destruction they have brought to his land through the CIA, its operatives and meddling politicians. Gordy decides to take things into his own hands after he is incensed by the Columbian groups US representatives describing the death of his wife and son as "Collateral Damage". He is about to find out the hard way that it may not be all as simple as he thinks. But revenge can drive a man to greater things.
The Verdict
"If it's pure escapism you want then trust Arnie to deliver and deliver he does in "Collateral Damage" another rootin, tootin all action hero flick. And don't we just love him. When all else fails! When the odds are stacked as high as a New York skyscraper! When no-one else can pull off the impossible! When no-one else will step forward in the name of justice! Who do call for? Who else but Arnie Schwarzenegger. The big lovable hulk!!"
