The Story
Captain Corelli's Madalin is a film that is easy to warm to. It's a story of love involving one girl and two men commencing with all the innocence of youth way back in 1940. It's time for the annual festival, the feast of St Gerasimos and through an accident during the celebrations, the feelings of two young loves, Pelagia and Mandras are revealed. Their love will be sorely tested when Mandras leaves to fight on the Albanian front. Pelagia writes constantly but her letters go unanswered. Time passes and the fighting is over. Unfortunately the peace is short lived and once again the setting changes to world war two and the invasion of Greece by the Italian Army followed by occupation under German control. Greece has surrendered and grudgingly accepted its fate. From an idyllic setting Pelagia [Penélope Cruz], her father Dr Iannis [John Hurt] and the inhabitants of Argostoli, Cephallonia, are thrown headlong into a new way of life under the constant watch of the armed forces. For the Italians it is like a holiday camp with a love for food, women, opera and music. Captain Corelli's [Nicholas Cage] attraction for Pelagia grows but the fall of Mussolini and the surrender of Italian Armed Forces to the Allies brings dramatic changes. The trecherous Germans want to disarm their former allies but Corelli doesn't trust them. The italains smuggle weapons to the greek freedom fighters and then rally against the germans but they are rounded up, to be taken away and then slaughtered by their former allies. Corelli is partially protected by one of his men but through luck survives. Friends bring him to the Doctors house and they bring him back to health. He is physically renewed but mentally he is racked with guilt over the death of his much loved friends. Mandras, still much in love with Pelagia, assists Corelli to escape by boat. The tale doesn't end there and this you must discover for yourself in this magical movie "Captain Corelli's Mandalin".

"Cage refrains from pumping up the volume, and actually underplays the character's soulful gusto, making Corelli all the more affecting."
Joe Leydon SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER
"Cruz probably doesn't have more than 40 lines of dialogue in the entire film, but she makes every word, every gesture, every held-back tear matter."
