Insight
If you're a big fan of the 'Crocodile Hunter' on television then you will enjoy the big screen version. Steve Irwin is one person you either love or hate. In the good old US of A [god bless em] they love Steve on the cable TV and last time I was over there he was featuring on just about everything. Of course every yank you talk to wants to know if you have met the 'Crocodile Hunter' and if you have a kangaroo for a pet or if you live along the banks of a billabong. They really are a pretty ill informed bunch and it makes you proud to be Australian. I mean really! They haven't got a clue! This made for the US of A market production featuring the 'Crocodile Hunter' was most probably made to suck dollars from the wallets of those gullible yanks. The thought of the 'Crocodile Hunter' on the big screen most probably brought the dollar signs flashing in a few eyes. Well I reckon we've given them a good old 'aussie shafting'. Like I said, if your a Steve Irwin fan you'll be in raptures but if you're not, you may find yourself dying a slow, painfull and terrible death. There are some pretty terrible attempts at humour here and they fall really flat. Poor old Magda Szubanski really has gone to the dogs and in fact, the dogs are far funnier than she is. David Wenham, after his brilliant performances in "The Bank" and "Molokai" certainly didn't do himself any favours by appearing in this load of 'croc'. Kate Beahan is cast as a Lara Croft look-a-like and the rest of the cast are as we would say 'are weak as piss'. In a nice touch though the film hots up a bit when Steve suggests to Terri that she should take her shirt off. We are then treated to the sight of Terri in a tight tank top and then the biggest highlight of the film. Terri snuggles a young joey to her chest and the camera gives us a huge close-up of her cleavage. That one works a treat! And some readers wonder why I don't use the star system. Sorry folks but from an entertainment perspective, "The Crocodile Hunter - Collision Course" is a huge black hole!! Yeh, get real. What the hell were they thinking. I think I'll stick to the small screen version, it's got far more class and at times it's very funny. Steve Irwin is great to watch and I admire him for what he has achieved but this time round mate I'm sorry to say you've made one hell of a 'clanger'. This bad. Very bad.
The Story
Steve Irwin takes on a desperate CIA agent
A spy satellite has self destructed and the most important part, containing top secret information is heading for earth at a blistering pace. It lands in outback Australia on the bank of a river. The CIA want it back but they may be in big strife. It seems a crocodile, with an attitude problems, has swallowed it. No worries mate, it has a homing device and it's sending out a strong signal. Two agents are sent, undercover, to retrieve the capsule. Steve and Terri Irwin are called in by local ranger Sam Flynn [David Wenham] to relocate a trouble making crocodile eating stock on the property of eccentric ranch owner Brozzie Drewitt [Magda Szubanski]. Yes, you guessed it! It's the same crocodile that has swallowed the satellite capsule. Now the CIA think Steve and Terri are spies who want the information contained in the capsule and they will stop at nothing to get it back.
The Verdict
"There's nothing in "Crocodile Hunter - Collision Course" that you haven't seen already on the small screen version or in a string of poor quality 'B' grade films. The humour falls flat on its face, the story line is poor and bugga me, the acting is bloody atrocious. The best part of this flop is Steve Irwin and the fantastic animals."
