Insight
There's plenty of action and excitement in the latest Bond film Die Another Day
If you like your films shaken but not stirred, watch out, because there's an earthquake coming and its called Bond, James Bond. Yes after forty years and twenty films Bond has bounced back yet again in another big, big film, one which will not only satisfy die-hard Bond fans, but should attract a whole lotta new fans. It seems as though there is nothing that can keep Bond down and "Die Another Day" proves beyond all doubt that the magic that has entertained audiences for the last forty years is still there today. Pierce Brosnan is the force behind keeping Bond on top. There's something about that boyish look he puts on that spells mischief and at the same time a dire warning. This time round Bond is much darker, much more focused and appears far more determined to succeed than at any other time in the forty year history of the Bond saga. Not one for living in the past, I find it little use trying to compare the bigger Bonds. Each had their own era, their own place in the sun and at present that lot falls to Brosnan who is everything fans could hope for when it comes to Commander James Bond. In "Die Another Day" he is joined [in more places than one] by Academy Award winner Halle Berry as Jinx Jordan and newcomer Rosamund Pike who does exceptionally well as Miss Miranda Frost. It's hard to believe that this Pikes debut in film and what a way to start out, as one of the big stars in "Die Another Day". John Cleese is back as the madcap inventor "Q", pitching his inventions and wit's against a dry, droll Bond. Dame Judith Dench is "M" who appears to be softening just a little. Those who have been James Bond fans for many years will enjoy a segment featuring Samantha Bond who provides a little light relief. I'll leave that for you to discover. Poor Miss Moneypenny. And it wouldn't be Bond without the baddies and this time round Bond has his hands full with Gustav Graves [Toby Stephens] and his side-kick Zao [Rick Yune]. "Die Another Day" takes us on an exciting journey from North Korea to Hong Kong, Cuba, London, Iceland and finally Korea. It's spectacular, full of excitement, the Bond women are beautiful but much of the credit [outside the lead actors] must go to director Lee Tamahori who has kept Bond, trim, taught and very terrific all of which is matched to a superb soundtrack [one of the best ever] by David Arnold.

Bond is in trouble, big trouble. His mission has been compromised and now he is a captive deep in North Korea. But Bond is made of stern stuff, it will take more than freezing conditions and a fair whack of torture to crack this mission hardened agent. North Korea will become the start of Bonds biggest challenge. Not only must he save the world from another meglomaniac but first he has to convince everyone that he is not the one who compromised the mission. Then there is the mysterious Jinx Jordan who seems to be everywhere Bond goes. And what of the beautiful, but cool Miss Frost. James is soon at it, doing what he does best explaining his big bang theory to Jinx and then warming up Miss Frost using his own special defrosting device. But its all part of the job for Bond and it won't sway him from the task at hand. He wants Zao and Gustav Graves and nothing, no nothing is going to stop him.
The Verdict
"Smarter, slicker, bigger, better, Bond lives to Die Another Day. Brosnan, Berry & Pike add a zing to "Die Another Day. There's enough action, gadgetry, excitement and women to satify the most demanding Bond fan. Bond, James Bond, has moved into the 21st century with gusto and great style. A damn good watch!"
