Insight
"Twenty-five years ago, freestyle skating was a bunch of short little muscular dudes popping handstands on skateboards. Then came the volatile, obnoxious, hard riding, hard living Dogtown Boys. America hasn't been the same since."The Lords of Dogtown" Spin Magazine 1999." And neither has the rest of the world! Dogtown & Z-Boys takes us back to an era of nostalgia that involved not only the USA but Australia too. The Dogtown crew were inspired by surfers from the land down under. "We were trying to emulate our favourite Australian surfers." "They were doing all this crazy stuff that we were trying to figure out in the water - but on skateboards, we could do it." Thanks to Craig Stecyk and Glen E Friedman there is an abundance of great photos plus some amazing footage incorporated into this remarkable film. Winner of the audiences awards at both the Sundance Film Festival and the American Film Institute, Dogtown & Z-Boys will have an appeal far beyond the surf and skate crowd. This is a trip back in time that many will grasp at as part of the nostalgia rush that is sweeping the world. It's a look at the "crew" then and now, revealing, with a bevy of colorful still shots, moving footage and crisp interviews, the innermost thoughts of a group of young men and one woman [Peggy Oki] who truly did change the world [and themselves]. From young surfers carving up the waves, to skate boarders carving up empty swimming pools, car parks or any slope they could get find, to the present and where the trip has now taken them to, it is all so remarkably well done and very gripping stuff. The interviews are crisp and very sharp, blending in well with the kaleidoscope of brash images and energy that flashes across the screen. Coupled together with Sean Penns smooth narration, Dogtown & Z-Boys leaves no doubts that it rates high on the scale with its entertaining, energy charged, nostalgia based format.
The Verdict
"A vibrant and nostalgic journey back to the 70's and 80's that truly captures the excitement of a growing surf and skate industry. Dogtown & Z-Boys encapsulates the spirit and innovation of the era most realistically! The best part about Dogtown & Z-Boys is that it will appeal to not only older surfers and skaties who carved it up in the late 20th century, but also to the new "now" generation who will pay homage to those trail blazing master blasters who have ensured their feats and achievments will remain in the pages of sporting history forever." Dogtown and Z-Boys is -rated M 15+
