Insight
Would you like the good news first or the bad news first. Ok, let me give you the bad news first, that way I can at least try and cheer you up a bit afterwards. The bad news is "The Hot Chick" sucks, it's 3 minutes longer to suffer than in other countries where audiences only had to watch it for 101 minutes, there's nary a set of ripe firm young breasts in sight nor is there the flash of a humungous penis, and finally Adam Sandler puts in an initial appearance which sucks and then re-appears a couple of more times to really suck and piss off those who already realise his days as a comedian are long past. I mention these points early just in-case there are any teenagers who think that an american film about a body swap between a good looking chick [Rachel McAdams] and a deadhead petty criminal [Rob Schneider], aimed squarely at teenage audiences, would at least have the decency to insult their intelligence with a good lashing of gratuitous nudity, flashing, a penis or two, a couple of jokes about taking 'a dump' and some unrealistic simulated sex. Unfortunatley young-ones, "The Hot Chick" contains none of these. In fact, a fair bit of "The Hot Chick" is very, very tame indeed. There are a few good points though, but the emphisis is on 'few'. After initially being a little slow of the mark Rob Schneider does grow into the part and with a pretty lame script doesn't come over too bad. Note I said, too bad. There are some quite funny scenes in "The Hot Chick" but not enough to erase the low moments. It does however contain a good moral message and that is, 'if your full of shit sooner or later you're going to cop a load of shit'. Now that may be raising the bar a little high for many these days who have forgotten what morals are but the message is there. So is "The Hot Chick" worth having a look at? Let me give you three reasons to see it. [1] You have free tickets, [2] their giving away tickets at the box office and [3] you haven't got a life, yet! Hang on I just thought of another reason why you could see "The Hot Chick". You were planning to see "The Master of Disguise" but since reading the reviews for it, you've decided [on the trailers alone] this is a far better film. You'd do far better to forget both films and give your money to the needy. Wait for it on video/DVD.
The Story
Snobby, self-centred, good looking high school prom queen Jessica [Rachel McAdams] is about to get a rude awakening. Thanks to a centuries old spell she is about to find herself in the body of a man. Not just any old man, but that of a low-life petty crook named Clive [Rob Schneider]. With only a few days to the cheerleaders competition and the schools Prom Night, Jessica must first convince her friends that it is her inside this gross male body and then find her original body which is now working as a mugger and an exotic pole dancer in a sleazy dance club. Along the way she will discover the true value of friendship and the many forms it comes in.
The Verdict
"If you must go see "The Hot Chick" don't expect it to be a riotous comedy. Go in with negative expectations and you should come out feeling as though you haven't been ripped off. "The Hot Chick" isn't 'too bad' it's just 'too bad' they hadn't done a bit more with a plot which could have been outrageously funny. Not much here."
What The Critics Say
"Schnieder bounces around with limp wrists, wearing tight tummy tops and hip huggers, twirling his hair on his finger and assuming that's enough to sustain laughs..."
Rob Blackwelder SPLICEDWIRE
"The bodily function jokes are about what you'd expect, but there are rich veins of funny stuff in this movie."
Liz Braun JAM! MOVIES
"If you think it's a riot to see Rob Schneider in a young woman's clothes, then you'll enjoy The Hot Chick."
Charles Ealy DALLAS MORNING NEWS
"What's the most positive thing that can be said about the new Rob Schneider vehicle? Well, it's not as pathetic as The Animal."
Ken Hanke, MOUNTAIN XPRESS
"Sorority Boys was funnier, and that movie was pretty bad."
John Larsen LIGHT VIEWS
"Its and pieces of The Hot Chick are so hilarious, and Schneider's performance is so fine, it's a real shame that so much of the movie -- again, as in The Animal -- is a slapdash mess."
Joe Leydon SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER
"I will say this for the film -- it's in color. And, it was mostly in focus. And I really can't say anymore for it beyond that."
Richard Roeper EBERT & ROEPER
"Enough to make any woman or gay man wish they could beam themselves to planet Zoltron."
Laura Sinagra VILLAGE VOICE
"Yes, the film does have its grosser moments but overall the film is Schneider’s best comedy to date."
Tony Toscano TALKING PICTURES
"Has a few funny moments, but pretty lame overall."
John Venable SUPERCALA.COM
"The film is a disaster from start to finish."
