Insight
Australians have much to be proud of. For such a large country with a small population we are the envy of many nations around the world. Our lifestyle. Our freedom. Our fabulous food, wine and beaches. And so it is when it comes to film and nobody knows it better than South Australians, after all, our own South Australian Film Corporation has been at the fore-front of our countries cinema renaissance for many years. One standout in recent years has been the world-wide acceptance of our comedy productions. Acclaimed films like "The Castle" and "The Dish" spring to mind immediately. These light-hearted 'look at ourself style' films epitomize our unique brand of humour, we just love taking the 'piss' out of ourselves. Australia has always been a place where rouges and con-men have flourished. I mean, how many times have we sold the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Opera House to some poor unsuspecting bastard. It's also a place where urban myths abound, about rags to riches [and sometimes back to rags] tales and hard luck stories too. Australia is also about mateship, something every male can testitfy too. "The Nugget" picks up on these 'symbols' and creates on the screen what in many ways is truly pure 'oz'. And, don't go along expecting some bloody big blockbuster smash hit comedy because you'll only make a bloody 'galah' of yourself. Hopefully by expecting too much you will get heaps back in return. You don't need a barrage of belly laughs to have a good time, you get just what you need with "The Nugget". There's our feeling of mateship, like getting away from the missus for a weekend with the mates, a few beers, a bit of adventure, a few good laughs and that "she'll be right' attitude which has kept the country going strong for years are all embelished within this 'little aussie battler'.
The biggest standout for "The Nugget" has to be the cast and the wonderful characters they play. Heck I am sure that once you've seen "The Nugget" you'll know someone like the luckless Lotto [Eric Bana] and his two dopey mates Sue [Dave O'Neil] and Wookie [Stephen Curry]. They are instantly recognizable and we feel comfortable with them. Backing up this big three are Max Cullen [a doyen of film, stage and the tele] who as Wally narrates this tale, Belinda Emmett in her feature film debut as Cheryl, Vince Colosimo [who starred with Eric Bana in the critically acclaimed "Chopper"] as Dimitri, New Zealand born comedian Alan Brough as Jurgen and aussie comedian Peter Moon [a former "Fast Forward" team member] as Ratner.
"The Nugget" does well in questioning the moral issues surrounding instant wealth and how it can affect and test long established relationships. Is money security on its own. What affect does instant wealth have on individuals. How important is trust and who can you trust. But don't worry, it's not a heavy message but it is there and it doesn't go unanswered. In fact its answered delightfully. So, if your looking for something unique, worth spending your hard earned bucks on and a satisfying outing, check out the latest aussie comedy on offer, "The Nugget". It's certainly worth a good look at!
The Story
It's the tale of 3 hapless council road workers who, thanks to a flash flood, a singing cockatoo, a sign from God and a hell of a lot of luck, discover the worlds largest gold nugget. It should be the answers to all their prayers, but it's turning out to be big trouble for this bunch of 'drongoes'. Our instant millionaires are in for a running battle with a few of the locals [who can't be trusted] while their long standing friendships with each other will be sorely tested. Is instant wealth the answer to their porblems? Can money replace the greatest treasure they already have, each other? And what lessons can be learnt in the quest for the meaning of life, love and mateship!
The Verdict
"Once again the unique brand of 'aussie humour' which has made films such as "Mullet", "The Castle", "Walking On Water" and "The Dish" household names around the world comes shining through in "The Nugget". We know it's corny, we know it's stupid, we know it's crazy, but it's still a heck of a lot of fun. As I always say ... "tis better to be happy than sad" and "The Nugget" certainly puts a smile on ones face."
