The Inside Story
"A cheesy, frequently sophomoric caper comedy." Timothy Knight REEL.COM
Let's get it out of the way first up. In case anyone hasn't noticed, Salma Hayek has big tits. Very big tits. And they are featured throughout "After The Sunset" with such regularity that if you're a 'person' with a breast fetish, well, you'll get your monies worth with this one. I say person, because these days it's not only guys getting their jollies perving on beautiful women with beautiful body parts. And, while I don't want to keep harping on Hayek's amply proportioned, beautifully shaped, smooth skinned, perfect breasts for too long, as a 'person' with an attention span deficit, they really are a distraction. Two bloody big distractions! There they are, packed into a variety of revealing apparel such as a bikini, a tight singlet top, lingerie and some pretty hot dresses. And I'm not the only critic who noticed an abundance of breast in "After The Sunset". It lead to film critic Kirsten Heysen writing, "In fact there are so many money shots of her gorgeous cleavage you start to feel embarressed for the camera crew." Yeh, right. They were all so embarressed they called in the AMPCU because it was effecting their ability to keep focussed on the job at hand. It would have been a tough job keeping the camera steady and maintaining maximum work efficiency while filming scenes of Salma Hayek leaping all over poor old Pierce Brosnan, who, ever the professional takes it all in his stride. When it comes to a pinch, it could be said that Hayek's abundance of exposed breast are just a distraction, the sole purpose of which is to cover up a thin plot line. As you will have noticed from the photo layout on this review, I have made a conciencious attempt to show as little of, as Kirsten puts it, Salma Hayek's "gorgeous cleavage" as possible. For the sake of decency I have limited the exposure. Let's now put Salma Hayek's "gorgeous cleavage", mighty mountains, huge titties aside and do something constructive. Like looking at what really makes "After The Sunset" tick. The story behind the film which finally exposes this fact; not only is Salma Hayek a fine actor but she has fine breasts and if you want to thank someone for bringing that to our attention, then thank Australia's Craig Rosenberg. You see he was called in by producers Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson after discovered they discovered the original screenplay by Paul Zybszewski and New Line Cinema bought the film rights. And here's a neat twist, "Both the studio and the producers agreed from the start that their first choice for the role of master thief Max Burdett was none other than Pierce Brosnan." Their luck was in right from the start. "When we were visualizing the character of Max, we thought about Pierce, but figured it was a long shot, that we would never get him. When Pierce expressed interest, we went in with guns blazing and told him why he was the only actor to play Max Burdett," producer Beau Flynn recalls. "From that point on the whole film took shape." The dangling carrot for Pierce Brosnan was his involvement in previous heist films, "The Heist" [1989] and "The Thomas Crown Affair" [1999] the latter a sexy little number that also had hearts racing thanks to Rene Russo's classy, sexy butt and her gorgeous cleavage. "when my agents sent me a bag of twelve scripts that fit a certain time period in my availability, "After the Sunset" was the one that really appealed to me. I love heist movies."
"This is the third one I’ve done and I thought this had the possibility of being a solid ensemble piece," says Brosnan. It is here that I must reveal that all the blame for the eventual exposure of Salma Hayek's ample amounts of bosom, lays with none other than guess who? Pierce Brosnan! "We wanted someone who could really give Max a hard time and see right through him," says Flynn. "Salma Hayek is very direct, and it felt like the energy between her and Pierce would be something very special. When we talked with Pierce about who could play Lola, we brought up Salma’s name and he responded right away. We are fortunate that she loved the script and was really excited to work with Pierce as well." The idea of starring in "After The Sunset" and working with Brosnan, the man who played the suave spy 007 in four James Bond blockbusters appealed to Hayek. "I’ve always been a fan of Pierce and wanted to work with him for a long time," she said. "He’s a very talented actor, and in this movie, his character is very relaxed, spontaneous, sometimes even goofy. You will see him with his messy hair, a little beard, he looks so handsome. It suits him!" Brosnan is just as taken with Hayek's talents. "Salma is one of cinema’s most beautiful women; an incredibly gifted woman," he says. "We’ve not really seen her like this before; playing a leading lady in a ‘popcorn’ movie. That’s exciting for her and for all of us to watch." With the two starring roles out of the way, the producers went looking for a Director. Brett Ratner who made a real name for himself with "Rush Hour I & II" came on board after Brosnan rang him at home saying, "I want you to do this movie. Pierce was on the movie before I came aboard, but I was excited because I had wanted to do a James Bond film with him." Ratner says he was attracted to the film by two aspects. "I’ve never done a movie like this and that was my attraction,” he says. “It’s a mixture of many genres. You’re walking the line between action, drama, humor and heart. It’s a heist movie that delivers on every level." And the other factor? "I love caper films. There are so many great films in this genre, but what makes After the Sunset different is that it’s a heist movie that has a combination of great relationships, heart and comedy. There’s the adversarial buddy relationship between Max and Stan a la "Midnight Run", the romantic relationship between Max and Lola, who are both thieves, and the relationship between Stan and Sophie, which all makes for a quite interesting and exciting mix of cat and mouse." So what does he hope audiences will think of his latest cinema offering? Simple that "audiences might even forget about the heist and be really concerned about the relationships at the core of these characters. I’m hoping that by the end of this film, people walk out smiling having been entertained, but that they’ll really fall in love with these characters." One of those characters and the catalyst for the 'wit' within the film is that of Woody Harrelson played by Agent Stanley P Lloyd. "It’s real inspired casting to have Woody Harrelson in the role of Stan," Flynn says. "He brings a style of organic comedy and plays it straight and real. You really will believe he is an FBI agent who has one quest in life, and that is to track down Max Burdett." And what does Harrelson think? "When this movie came along, I loved it right away. It’s a great heist movie. Plus it was an interesting prospect for me to play an FBI agent!" "After The Sunset", is a film that shouldn't be taken too seriously. After all, "After The Sunset" is meant to be fun [like some of the obvious tongue in cheek comments in this review] and if you take it as just a good fun heist film you'll be satisfied with the experience.

The Story
"It’s not that great a picture, but it does what it’s supposed to do and that’s why you spend the bucks after all isn’t it?" Eric Lurio GREENWICH VILLAGE GAZETTE
Max "The King of Alibi's" Burdett and his accomplice Lola have finally retired to the Bahamas. It's an idyllic lifestyle after numerous successful heists and a place they feel totally at home in. Until the boredom sets in. How much lobster can you consume, how much booze can you drink and how many tourists can you sit with before cracks appear in paradise? Not many as Max soon discovers. Then an old adversary turns up in the shape of FBI Agent Stanley P Lloyd. Max, Lloyd and Lola go back a long way. A long, long way and Lloyd, who has failed on a number of occassions would love to nail Max. When a cruise ship comes to the island with a tempting cargo, Max becomes flavour of the month. The local crime boss Henri Mooré wants in on the action. Lloyd believes Max will have a go at the cargo. It seems everyone is convinced that Max is willing to pull one more job. Everyone except Max that is.
The Verdict
"Don't take "After The Sunset" too seriously folks and you'll have a lot of fun. Brosnan in retirement mode sporting a fair bit of stubble and sunglasses to hide his bleary eyes is a far cry from his usual attire as the smooth 007. Salma Hayek adds plenty of window dressing to the film while Woody Harrelson provides the catalyst for plenty of laughs as a luckless FBI agent. It's the perfect diversion for those who are looking for something light and yet still exciting or anyone who is a fan of Pierce Brosnan."
