"You don't need to have seen Before Sunrise to appreciate Before Sunset, but as a one-two cinematic punch on the subjects of love and aging these films have few equals."

Pure romantic indulgence. That best describes the smashing sequal to the 1995 film "Before Sunrise". Richard Linklater's follow-up is the delightfully romantic "Before Sunset". Ideally, if you haven't seen the original, it would be a real treat to get a hold of "Before Sunrise" and then see the sequal. Notwithstanding that statement, it plainly isn't a must, because "Before Sunset" can be seen as a stand alone experience. This beautifully shot love story picks up some nine years after "Before Sunrise" when Jesse and Celine promised they would meet again. I've been a big supporter of director, writer Richard Linklater and this film justifies my faith in his talents. It's another triumph, and not just for the mere fact that this is truly excellent viewing but also for the effort the director put into accomplishing what is the best romance of the decade. Linklater not only directed "Before Sunset", he wrote the story with Kim Krizan, co-wrote the screenplay with stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and produced this little masterpiece. At just eighty minutes it is jammed packed with "feel good" appeal and shot in real time. For cinemagoers who haven't seen the original, let me reveal that "Before Sunrise" is the tale of two young people who meet on a train travelling overnight from Budapest to Vienna. They fall in love and promise they will meet again within six months. Of course the inevitable happens and their paths take them on a journey of nine years until they meet again in the city of romance, Paris. The collaboration on "Before Sunset" started in 2001 when Delpy, Hawke and Linklater started on the script. Somehow, having seen the film, a script seems so alien because the film feels so natural, the conversation so real, it really is as though Delpy and Hawke themselves have reunited after sucha long abscence. That is the simplicity that makes Linklater's film even more attractive. It has a feel that it is all happening now. The use of flashbacks to "Before Sunrise" only adds to reinforcing a feeling that the audience will want the lovers to fulfill the romantic dream of finally becoming one. No doubt there will be some 'older' viewers who will remember the "Eurail" experience and the many friends made while travelling accross europe by train. Those days of love, adventure, the heady experience of being far from home. Of fleeting romances found and lost, the pangs from memories of "what if" or "If only". The self doubt gnawing ones concience, the tugging of ones heartstrings, the thought of leaving behind someone who might never be seen again. Those viewers will have a real connection with "Before Sunset" and understand what faces Jesse and Celine. Other viewers will find fascination in the "where are they heading" aspect as we wander through Paris, eavesdropping on their conversation, hoping, expecting that what we wish in our hearts will be fulfilled. I suspect many will, after seeing "Before Sunset" concur with critic Peter Sobczynski who notes; "In its own small way, 'Before Sunset' is a perfect film; there is not a single scene in this film that I would want to change or alter in any way." I know I do, for this is the perfect film for lovers, those who are romantics at heart and the many who love romancing the mind. On that score, Richard Linklater has truly succeeded.

The Story
"One of the season's must-see efforts. All of the studio-produced, mass-marketed romances out there, take note: this is precisely what a love story should be." ... Dustin Putman THEMOVIEBOY.COM
"Before Sunset" continues from where the original film, "Before Sunrise" left us with Jesse and Celine promising they would meet again in six months time. Unfortunately nine years have passed and that planned meeting of young lovers hasn't eventuated. Then Jesse comes to Paris on the last stop of his book tour. At the final reading he spots Celine at the back of the room. Celine now lives in Paris but Jesse, who lives in New York, is booked to fly home that evening. The connection is still there. The strong bond of two souls draws them back together and their love is rediscovered and their emotions rekindled. The meeting leads both of them to ask questions of themselves and each other that must can not be left unanswered. From the bookshop, to a cafe and up to that crucial depature, they engage one another revealing their innermost thoughts on their lives and each other. Will it be enough to bring them together once more?
The Verdict
"A romantics wonderland. Driven by beautiful settings and wonderful dialogue, "Before Sunset" is a remarkable to sequal to Linklater's 1995 classic "Before Sunrise". Reunites Jesse and Celine in Paris some nine years after we left them in Vienna. If you can, hire the DVD and then go see this. It's the perfect film for those who love a little romance. Highly Recommended."
