Who are Broken Lizard? That's the question many may ask? The answer is simple. Jay Chandrasekhar, Erik Stolhanske, Paul Soter, Steve Lemme and Kevin Heffernan, five guys with "a hip sense of humour and plenty of quotable one-liners". Five very talented young men who have "been honing their unique brand of irreverent, character driven comedy for a decade now." The groups first film "Puddle Cruiser" may not have taken the world by storm but the groups 2001 film "Super Troopers turned quite a few heads. Following the success of that film, the guys started "looking for something completely different to sink their comic teeth into." With a keen interest in the horror genre, "it seemed a blood curdling tale would be a natural match for their fearless style of comedy." And, as the Lizard's didn't want to do a horror spoof "they decided to incorporate elements of a serial killer thriller right into their trademark comedy style." So how did they come up with the idead of a club set on an tropical island? It seems they wanted to "go somewhere a bit more sexy than Poughkeepsie, the locale of Super Troopers." But why? The answer to that question came from group member Paul Soter who explained, "Sure Poughkeepsie was lovely, "but we thought, why not take our next movie somewhere with no lack of women in bikinis and tropical drinks?" Sure why not. Every teenagers fantasy come true. An island filled with scantilly clad, wanton, willing young women and an endless supply of high powered tropical drinks. And so Pleasure Island was born. A little patch of paradise "designed as a singles resort taken to the ultimate extremes of let it all hang out indulgence." Knowning their fearless style of humour, their had to be a catch. "It's a fantasy come to life. You've got this island where a new boatload of young, fun, horny people comes every week and the drinks are flowing. It's the last place in the world you'd ever want to leave," says director Jay Chandrasekhar, "but only until people start getting murdered, and then it becomes the place you desperately want to escape." Many may be shocked to think that in real life island like Pleasure Island really do exist. It's true acording to another Lizard member Steve Lemme. "I've been to some of these resorts before and you realize that they are literally designed to get as many people laid as possible and they disguise the entire day around that." Couldn't you just kick yourself. I bet there's more than a few reading this review and thinking to themselves, "Shit! Just my luck to have missed out on the experience." When it came to "Club Dread" there is that little twist of course and it does make for a fun experience. So what's the twist? The staff who run the resort is "trying to keep that get laid attitude going while also trying to figure out who's killing people on the island," Steve explained. Leading the bunch of whacky staffers is Coconut Pete an aging, hedonistic, washed up, 70's rock star played by non-lizard Bill Paxton who "so loved the idea of the island paradise that he even jokes he might start such a resort himself."
Paxton says he can relate to Coconut Pete's "seize the day and party hard philosophy." And how does he see his character? "I see Pete as a guy who believes we're only on earth for a short time, so why not sit back, relax and have a great time. I loved the opportunity to embrace that whole lifestyle." A bonus for Paxton was learning to play the guitar, revealing that "If I had known how to play the guitar, I would probably never would have become an actor." Crikey Bill that's a bit much! Was there a downside to the role? "I got these hair extensions that turned out to be the most painful thing I've ever done for a movie role," he confided. "They took about eight and a half hours to put in and my head was sore for days." Well, if there's an upside there has to be a downside Bill, but what's your own verdict on "Club Dread". "I think the film has a terrific and original sense of humour," he said. The adds, "Perhaps Jordan Ladd put it best when she called it "sophisticated low brow". The Broken Lizard style is contemporary but there's also something classic and old school about their routines, which are filled with gags out of Laurel and Hardy, physical comedy out of Buster Keaton, absurbity out of Monty Python and a lot of contemporary sexual innuendo." I couldn't have put it better myself Bill. The final choice when it comes to seeing "Club Dread" should be tempered by those words. Broken Lizard comedy is not for everyone, but let's hope that as they progress, one day it will be.

The Story
"A movie made by guys who laugh at their own jokes, directed at people who will laugh at anything." Adam Nayman EYE WEEKLY
Pleasure Island is the perfect place to spend a hedonistic holiday on. Here the drugs, booze and women are are, well, free. Coconut Pete, former rock era great, is the host and operator of Pleasure Island where every holiday is one big party. Until staff members start turning up dead. It seems there's a muderer on the loose who is intent on killing everyone but the guests. Slowly but surelythe mysterious fark figure is whittling the numbers with a razor sharp machete. And, as if to taunt the intended victims, the killer leaves behind cryptic messages on the clubs message board. Those messages are the words to one of Coconut Pete's greatest hits. While the guests party, the surviving staff members try to keep their cool, putting on a brave face while realizing that at any moment they could be the next victim. When the clubs Security Chief Hank turns up dead, panic really sets in. Who will survive. Can anyone survive. They are about to find out.
The Verdict
"This is the sought of film critics laugh at in the dark and then tell you not to see. Their right! But .... not if you enjoyed zanny comedies such as "Not Another Teen Movie", "Naked Gun", Scary Movie 3" or "Guest House Paradiso". If you can laugh at slapstick silliness and outrageous stupidity, then you'll probably find this very funny and, a better offering than "Super Trooper", Lizards debut film. "Club Dread" is exactly what you'd expect from Broken Lizard. Outrageously silly! Decidedly black!"
