At A Glance
Having seen the original film "Final Destination" I was a little unsure about the sequal and just how good a follow-up could be. But never fear readers because having had the chance to see "Final Destination 2" on two occassions, I can assure you that it sure is a lot of fun. It reminded me of those halcyon days in the early eighties when video recorders were really starting to take off. There was a rush in those days to see a plethera of 'horror' films and the video shops were doing huge business with rentals. Its good to know that nothing has changed over the years when it comes to scaring the pants off us. Well thats not quite right I guess because the special effects are just fantastic these days and that adds to the realism. The beauty of "Final Destination 2" is that unlike those early horror movies when we knew we were being stalked and eventually came face to face with the adversary, in "Final Destination 2" the thing that strikes terror into the hearts of both the charcters in the film and the audience watching, is in fact never seen. The premise that everyone is afraid of the prospect of death is enough to drive this film into the realms of super spooky. The twist in "Final Destination 2" is that 'Death' has once again been cheated by the intervention of outside forces and is now hunting for each of his intended victims. "Final Destination 2" provides a variety of ways in which death can despatch its victims and there are some 'terrible' ways to die as you will see. I had so much fun the first time round that I couldn't wait to see it again. I must say that "Final Destination 2" was just as much [if not a lot more] fun the second time round. The audience was squeaming in their seats, there were gaps of horror and plenty of screams ringing throughout the theatre. Hell, there were even a few trying to look away from the screen exclaiming "I can't look". You know what? I think I had just as much fun watching the audience cop it as I did watching death catching up with its hapless victims in "Final Destination 2". Footnote: Check out your local Video/DVD rentals store and grab a copy of "Final Destination". That way you can breeze into the second edition having experienced the fate of those who survived flight 180.
The Story
Kimberly Corman [AJ Cook] is driving down the freeway when her van is involved in a horrific accident. A log carrier loses its load and the carnage created by the huge logs crashing into vehicles claims the lives of many of those caught up in the chaotic happenings. Kimberly and her three friends are among the victims, or are they. It seems Kimberly has had a preminition, a vision of what could happen. She refuses to move her vehicle. All the signs are there. A bag lady at the side of the intersection, a school bus travels past, a white van, the songs on the radio are the same. Officer Thomas Burke [Michael Landes] intervenes. He asks her to step from her vehicle. She obeys and then points to a huge logging truck as it speeds past. The highway erupts into a fireball. Suddenly Officer Burke flings her out of the way and a car carrier slams into her vehicle killing her three friends instantly. It seems death doesn't let go that easy. Now all those who were saved from the highway horror by Kimberlys intervention are being hunted down one by one. Each will die a grissly, terrible death unless they can find a way to save themselves. But they had better hurry because death won't wait for anyone.
The Verdict
"If horror films are your genre then you will truly be in seventh heaven with "Final Destination 2". With first class special effects, "Final Destination 2" will have you jumping, screaming and trying to hide as death stalks its victims. "Final Destination 2" never takes itself seriously and neither should you. Just get on board for one hell of a trip into hell and back. "Final Destination 2" provides enough bloody gore to satisfy any ardent horror fan."
