"You’ve seen it done better, but you haven’t seen Dog Soldiers, a fierce, hugely fun roller coaster of scares that outdoes most of today’s studio offerings. Hopefully this will mark the return of the simply done but genuinely scary horror feature." "Genre fans will lap it up and then some with its large helpings of blood, gore and fantastically created monsters." Clint Morris MOVIEHOLE
Are you planning a holiday in Scotland treking through the highlands? Is your favourite passtime camping at remote or isolated location? Do you enjoy a stroll through your local park in the dead of night when no-one else is using the walking tracks? Then let me give you a couple of quick tips. The first tip is this, be very careful if your plans happen to coincide with a full moon. And the second? Whatever you do, don't go seeing "Dog Soldiers". Why you ask? Haven't you heard? There are dangerous, supernatural critters out there. Great big ugly monsters with bloody big teeth, sharp claws, horribly bad breath and glowing yellow eyes looking for their next victim [s]. Yes, the places mentioned at the start are where Werewolves go hunting for their supper and you may be the next delicious dish on their menu. It's enough to scare the crap out of you, isn't it? But it's true. Really it is or didn't you see what happened in an "American Werewolf in London". During the day Werewolves look just like ordinary folks and for most of the time their a pretty harmless bunch. But when the first beams of a full moon light the sky at night, watch out. Woe betide any person silly enough to be camping overnight in a dark, remote, secluded part of a picturesque forrest because come morning it won't be such a pretty sight. No, not ones those evil werewolves have their way. They strike with lightning speed. Before you know it they're ripping at the jugular, draining every delicious drop of blood from your body until they've had their fill. A Werewolf kill is not a pretty sight you know [just in-case you haven't seen one lately]. Werewolves have horribly long claws that are so sharp doctors called use them to perform life saving surgery with. No, fair dinkum, I'm not bullshitting you. Look, the worse fate that could befall and intend Werewolfs victim is if they somehow manage to escape a good mauling at the hands of one of these supernatural monsters. No a pretty sight all those deep cuts that go right to the bone. Gee, makes me shiver at the thought of it. Of course there is an up-side to being the victim of a Werewolfs victim. The positive side to it is this, unless you happen to run into a hunter who is armed with silver bullets, you're guaranteed a pretty long life, you know, like a few centuries at least. And the moral to this story. Well if you don't like blood, guts, death, mayhem, blood curdling screams or the sight of bodies slashed, ripped or dismembered or if you'll be traumatised by the sight of victims with their throats torn out and the look of terror etched on lifeless faces, then steer clear of "Dog Soldiers" a rip snorting, rollicking modern day tale set in the Scottish Highlands where a group of soldiers take on a bunch of howling, terrifying Werewolves who are hell bent on making a meal out of them. If you're a horror fan "Dog Soldiers" will sound absolutely delicious! As for me? Well after all that I think I'll enjoy my steak rare tonight. In case you weren't aware, it is a full moon readers.
The Story
Imagine you're leading a six man squad on a routine army exercise in the Scottish Highlands. You're supposed to be behind enemy lines but just where is the enemy. Your men are inexperienced, thats why their here, to learn survival. You're not carrying any live ammunition, after all, this is just a practice run, something to knock the men into shape, to get them bonding as a squad before you return to the comforts of civilization and the squads barracks. But something just doesn't seem right. You can't quite put your finger on it but you're about to find out. The sun has gone down and the howling starts. There's something out there, its getting closer. Just what the hell have you been set up for. A burst of gunfire in the distance and it's time to move out. This isn't what you had planned for and the gruesome discovery of slaughtered bodies, ripped apart in a horrific attack adds to the nightmare. Its time to grab all the arms and ammo you can from the dead and get the hell out of there. The howling is getting closer and then you're battling for your life. The enemy is quick, ferocious and one mistake can mean death. It's going to be a long bloody night and one hell of a fight.
The Verdict
"There have been many films over the years featuring Werewolves in a variety of ghoulish situations but none have taken us into the highlands of Scotland before. "Dog Soldiers" takes the power of superstition, terror and the supernatural to a higher plane by pitting these creatures against the firepower of a modern army. Needless to say, this confrontation produces more than its fair share of gruesome deaths, blood, entrails and spooky moments to keep fans on the edge of their seats. "Dog Soldiers" is decidedly different and even though it lacks a big name cast and the firepower of a holywood blockbuster, it has all the ingredients required for a film in its genre. "Dog Soldiers" is an entertaining film. "Dog Soldiers" is right up there with the best of them.
