STAR PICK - CLINT EASTWOOD
Born Clinton Eastwood Jr in St. Francis Hospital, San Francisco on the 31st of May 1930 Clint as he is known by is indeed a film legend. When asked about Eastwood the first thing that most fans would say is "make my day". It would be obvious to say that this phrase from Dirty Harry will stay with us forever as part of film history. Those great films came after a run of spaghetti westerns that rocketed Eastwood to film fame around the world. Television audiences already knew him as Rowdy Yates from the hit series Rawhide. He has shown his versitallity over the years with a variety of roles but always he is a hero to audiences as he meats out justice to the wicked and evil crooks in many of his films.
Clintwood first came to film in 1955, he was offered a contract by Universal Films [some say thanks to director Arthur Lubin] but the parts he played in 1955 in "Francis in the Navy", "Tarantula" and "Revenge of the Creature" were only bit parts and Universal didn't keep him around. He bounced back in 1959 with the part of Rowdy Yates the hit TV show "Rawhide" and played this part for six years. Things were about to change though and in 1964 he starred in a low budget western that soon became a huge hit. That movie was a "Fist full of dollars" and it started the cult following of the man with no name. Then in 1966 came For a "Few Dollars More", "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" both were huge success's. Also that year all three were released in the USA, and as he had been tagged, "The Man With No Name" found himself at the top of the box-office charts. Since those early days he has gone on to star, direct and write movies. He has been able to successfully carry all before him with a variety of roles from those cheap westerns to the edge of space in the acclaimed "Space Cowboys". If there is one thing Eastwood gives with a movie it's entertainment. Who could forget the rollicking "Paint Your Wagon" where he and Lee Marvin crooned there way accross the screen or his charm in "The Bridges of Madison County with Meryl Streep. Then of course those 'Dirty Harry' type roles and that famous line that was delivered to him, "Callahan your a dinosaur". But audiences loved every film he starred in or directed. Hugely acclaimed films such as: "Play Misty for Me", "Any Which Way You Can", "Pale Rider", 1990's "White Hunter Black Heart", "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"and "Million Dollar Baby". But how many know of his prowess as a composer and songwriter. Yes, noted music critis have stated that if he hadn't made it as an actor, he would have as a jazz musician. His OST soundtracks compositions include: "Mystic River" & "Flags of Our Fathers". His star still shines bright today with reruns of his movies on television that still draw big ratings. There's no doubt that when it comes to Hollywood legends 79 year old Clint Eastwood stands tall. And its never been taller than in his latest film, "Gran Torino for which he wrote the closing creditd song, 'Gran Torino'.
