The Inside Story
That loveable, sensitive Man Whore Deuce Bigalow is back on the big screen again in another 'politically incorrect' Man Whoring Adventure and what fun it is. Rob Schneieder says he's back in the role of Deuce because of Bigalow's fans. "I never really thought about doing a sequel. But people really liked the character and I just kept hearing it for so long that I thought, 'Well, you know what? It might be fun.' Then, I started flirting with the idea that maybe we should revisit these characters. It would be great to be able to write for Eddie Griffin as TJ. And there’s something to be said about the 'everyman', or in this case, the 'slightly-less-than-everyman'. People can relate to the character of Deuce, I think." Schneiders says that with the seed for a sequel planted his thoughts turned to Paul Schrader’s classic gigolo film, "American Gigolo". It was what got the project going. "It was ridiculous," Schneider says. "I mean, like Lauren Hutton, supermodel, needs to hire a gigolo? So I thought, ‘Who are the real women that need gigolos?’ And that’s how it started." Joining forces with writers David Garrett and Jason Ward work started on a script. Twelve months later the job was done. The new story contains two fresh elements, Europe and the "The International Man-Whore Society". "Wouldn’t it be great if there was a whole bunch of other gigolos that Deuce had to compete with?,' Schneider posits. "The best gigolos in the world, this Society of Man-Wores?" And where in Europe is this society of Man Whores based? "Why in Amsterdam, of course," says Schneider. The big advantage with having the location in Europe is that those who missed the first Deuce Bigalow film will be able to see this as a fresh start. "I didn’t approach this as a sequel," Schneider says. "If you never saw the first movie, you won’t miss a step in this one." It's a layered story the writers have come up with featuring a society of some 200 Man Whores, a psychotic killer, a hint of love and a lot of laughs. According to Schneider "pretty soon the whole idea was funnier than the first movie. I didn’t want to just make a movie that was similar to the first one. I wanted it to be an entirely different experience. To me, this one is like Ben Hur compared to the first one." When it came to casting the film, some were more easily convinced about taking a role than others. One who took a little convincing was Dutch-born actor Jeroen Krabbé. He took the role at the urging of his son Jakob Krabbé. Rob's brother and the films producer John Schneider recalls that Jeroen went to his son Jakob and said, "Why do you think I got offered this crazy movie?" And his son responded, "What do you mean crazy? This is a great movie, Dad." Jeroen, who was last seen in "Ocean's Twelve" says once his son told him the story of Deuce he grasped the charm of the film. "This innocent American guy Deuce Bigalow is confronted all of a sudden with our society, with the coffeeshops, the sex shops and the general openness of my country," he noted.
"And that’s what makes it so funny, because it’s his reflection on our world. He’s completely dumbfounded by it." It's no secret the production team were thrilled when Jeroen came on board. "Jeroen was a real catch," John Schneider says. "He brought so much to the role. He is Gaspar personified." Back again to reprise his role as T.J. Hicks is Eddie Griffin that rascal who this time is pimping Man Whores in Amsterdam from his canal boat 'Pimp Of Da Sea'. Griffin too thinks that this film is better than the first. "Most sequels aren’t as good as the first one," he explained. "This movie, I guarantee you, is definitely better than the first." What makes the film a whole lot better is cute, blonde actress Hanna Verboom. who provides a love interest for the grieving Bigalow. Verboom admits she knew nothing about Deuce Bugalow at all. How did she get around that little hurdle? "When I heard that I was going to do an audition, I rented the first film immediately," she recalls. "My roommate came in and we watched it together and we were basically laughing hysterically throughout." One person who didn't take the offer seriously was Mike Bigelow. With a name like Bigalow, it wouldn't be hard to think someone might be taking the mickey out of you, but he need not have feared. They were serios. What was Bigelow's first reaction? "I thought, 'this must be a goof.' They said, 'let’s bring in Bigelow ‘cause he’s got the same name.'" Like everyone else, he too was very taken by the script which by the way, he found very funny. "It reminded me of one of my favorite comedies, Silver Streak," says the director, who also saw it was as "a riff on the film Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? in the same way Silver Streak was a take-off on North by Northwest." Producer John Schneider recalls something very interesting about the Director. "The interesting thing for us about Mike, who was one of the first directors we met, that he was not only talented, but the quietest person in the room," John Schneider recalls. "Everyone else we met with was so busy selling themselves. Ultimately, the flashy people faded away and Mike was left standing. He put a lot of thought into his presentation and was also open to experimenting. The thing about Mike is that he has a great spirit." John's brother Rob agress adding, "Mike came in incredibly well-prepared which enabled him to be completely flexible on the set. In comedy, you always have to be able to make room for the dynamics taking place at that moment between the actors, the setting and the material, and Mike was right there with us." Another person on the production teams list was cinematographer Marc Felperlaan. "I was impressed by a film called Amsterdamned and how it used the city’s canals and various locations," Executive Producer Glenn S Gainorsaid, adding "I thought, 'If we could find a cinematographer like that, I would be really happy.'" He got his wish, because when Felperlaan heard the production was coming to Amsterdam, "he got in touch with us," says Gainor. "We met with him and signed him on immediately." His expertise came in handy because in the end they used 45 locations around the city during filming.
"It was important if you’re going to fly thousands of miles to be on location, you should absolutely use every location you can,” Gainor said. "We made a huge point of not using sound stages wherever possible." Producer John Schneider agrees. "You couldn’t buy this architecture. You couldn’t build it on sets. We were essentially on the largest back lot in film history, the city of Amsterdam." For the trivia buffs here's a some of beauties. First, look for Australian actor Alex Dimitriades amongst the Man Whores. Second, there is a third member of the Schneider family appearing in the film. Pilar M Schneider is the boys mother. Now how's that for a seal of approval? When someone asks, 'did your mom approve of you making the film' Rob and John can answer, 'of course she did. She even took a starring role. Look for her as the 'Woman in Airplane' on the flight to Europe. Next up is the location used for the "Man-Whore Society Awards". The exterior shots were of the historic Artis Zoo, was founded in 1828. The interior shots of the 'award' were filmed at Amsterdam’s Municipal Theatre, Stadsschouwburg which is home to the Toneelgreop Amsterdam theatre group. Finally, I guess you want to know if the cast and crew had fun filming "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigilo", don't you? Here's what actress Hanna Verboom had to say about her experience of working with the large production crew. "I think I got a little spoiled," she said with a laugh. "One of the fun things about this movie was that each day I woke up and went to the set knowing it was going to be a completely different, strange day. One day there was a midget flying through a window into a canal. The next day there was a two-meter-tall giant lady sitting next to me. After a while, I just thought, 'Okay, it’s just another day on the set of Deuce Bigalow.'" A Flying Midget? I told you it was pretty outrageous.

The Verdict
"If you're right into being 'politically correct' you'd be advised to avoid this like the plague because it will really offend that particular section of the community who will miss the sympathetic message contained in the film. Those who enjoyed Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigilo will have a hoot and piss themselves laughing at Deuce's latest adventure. It's clever! It's witty! It's very funny! It's the outrageous Man Whore adventure, "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo". Recommended to those who can turn the other cheek."
