Those who see "Hellboy will be pleased that director Guillermo del Toro had a keen interest in the comic book hero. "I had become addicted to the comic. So when I first heard it was going to be turned into a movie, I fought very hard to get into the room and have a chance to say, I am the guy to make this movie," he said. Del Toro "saw a unique superhero", one he he says "is actually a lovable under-achiever. He was born with this enormous strength and immortality, yet all he wants to do in life is kick back with a six-pack of beer and watch football on TV with his girlfriend, like a regular guy." And del Toro makes no bones about the fact that he always wanted to be involved in the making of a monster style film. "I've always wanted to make a monster movie and this one has outlandish characters and fantastic monsters and settings," he says. "But in order to have the audience connect with it, I had to find a couple of emotional throughlines." One of those throughlines was to give the red giant a love interest, something which, while making him a little vulnerable, also gives him wide appeal. "Hellboy has the physical body of a half-century old red ape, but the heart and mind of a young teenager. He is very spoiled, he’s very temperamental and he’s very unruly," del Toro explained. Having seen "Hellboy" a number of times, one thing really stands out. That standout is Ron Perlman. It's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Perlman is Hellboy. That was evident when del Toro and Hellboys creator Mike Mignola discussed who should be in the lead role. "We both immediately knew Ron Perlman should play him," says Mignola. "He’s got Hellboy’s demeanor. He’s got that working stiff, been-there-done-that quality in almost everything he does. And he’s got the perfect voice. Soon after we first met I said to Guillermo, 'So who do you think should play Hellboy?' And there was a little bit of sizing each other up; like who’s going to say it first. And we both said Ron Perlman at the same time." While it turns out their belief in Perlman was justified it's no secret that it would take a lot to convince the studios that he was the right man for the job. I for one thank my lucky stars that Guillermo del Toro had both the strength and the conviction to hang out until the right backers came along. Perlman, who had worked with del Toro on the film "Cronos" admits he was flattered by when the director contacted him with the news that he was writing a movie just for him. On his character he says, "What I like about Hellboy is that he fights monsters but he’s also a sensitive soul. He’s bad, he’s fun, he’s fast." He also admits that it's a very physical role and one he was glad he had time to prepare for. “Physically, I knew I was in for six months of fighting crime against monsters and demons," he revealed,"the big dudes that Hellboy has to take down. The action sequences were going to require incredible outpourings of energy, so I felt like I needed to be in tip-top shape. I’m grateful I had almost a year between when I found out I was going to be doing this and the start of production. I was at the gym, five, six days a week and doing a lot a cardio and just getting as strong as I possibly could."
Crucial to the "Hellboy" story is the man who rescues him from the evil Kroenen and Grigori Rasputin and the raises him like a son for the next sixty years. "John Hurt as Broom looks exactly like the character in the comic book. At times I thought I must have looked at a photo of Hurt when I drew this guy. It was spooky", says Mike Mignola. "Broom anchors the story," says producer Lloyd Levin, "and it was our tremendous good fortune to get John Hurt to play him. He gives the character a kind of gravitas. He makes Hellboy understand that, in life, even the oddest creature has a purpose." Actor John Hurt is no stranger when it comes to playing specialized roles involving the unusual. Who could ever forget his heart wrenching portrayal of "The Elephant Man" or his dramatic role in "Alien. Both roles received much critical acclaim. There were a couple of factors that drew him to "Hellboy" "Guillermo is a director I admire tremendously," he said. "Also, it’s the kind of movie I’d never made before. A fantasy piece with touches of human emotion." Another character viewers will get a big kick out of is Abraham 'Abe' Sapien, played by a man who has a career of involvement with animals. Evidently actor Doug Jones didn't bat an eyelid when del Toro gave him the news that Jones would play a fish in "Hellboy". Mind you this is no ordinary fish, but it was a first as Jones admits he's play just about everything but a fish. "I’ve played many creatures before," he says. "I’ve been a kangaroo twice. I’ve been an alien, a cockroach, a large mosquito. I’ve been anything with a tail, basically. I’ve never been a fish before, however. This is new to me. Full head-to-toe gig. But curiously, he’s one of the easier creatures I’ve played because they used so much of me. Parts are glued on to me but it’s not like I’m wearing a big suit with a giant head on going ‘Arrgghh!’ I love Abe. He’s the smart guy." The last piece of this wierd triangle is Liz Sherman, played by actress Selma Blair. Going on appearance, Liz looks pretty normal. In reality, appearances can be deceptive and in the case of LIz, very deceptive. "Liz is a fire starter who caused great tragedy in her life," says Blair. "When she used her power, it resulted in the death of her parents and many people in a nearby town. After that, she became a ward of the state and the BPRD took her in to harness her pyro-kinetic abilities." Liz also provides the love interest in "Hellboy". And, when you have a red giant pining after you, expect the unexpected. . "Hellboy is her comfort," says Blair. "He’s someone who’s similar to her. Part of her hates that however, because unlike Hellboy, on the outside she looks like a regular girl. So, she’s very conflicted. Like Hellboy, she’s afraid of establishing real connections because she doesn’t know how to be normal." While there is certainly a lot that is not normal when it comes to this "Hellboy" of a story, one thing viewers can be assured of is this; you're in for a hell of a time. The good news is that you won't have long to wait for a second installment. Perlman has already signed for the sequal which is due in 2006. That's something to look forward to.

Mike Mignola created the character Hellboy in 1962. Hellboy first appeared on the cover of a convention program book as a hirsute and drooling demon, glowering menace at the reader. On his belt was the name Hellboy. Aware that he'd created something much more interesting than a one-off joke character, Mignola began to explore the possibilities of launching this demonic thing's own comic book.

The Verdict
"When it comes to comic book heroes there's none better than "Hellboy". Ron Perlman is superb as the cigar chomping, fireproof giant with a strange love for pussycats. "Hellboy" is one hell of a hero and this is one jolly, red giant everyone will love. Director and driving force behind the film, Guillermo del Toro, has unleashed a hero everyone will want to see more of. "Hellboy" provides plenty of laughs, action and even a dose of romance. Never a dull moment. You'll be left red-faced if you miss it! Recommended viewing."
