Synopsis
Ashley Albright is the luckiest woman in the world, a person to whom all the good things in life have come far too easily. She can pick a lottery ticket at random and hit the jackpot. In New York, the world’s busiest city, she never has to wait for a cab. And she has a terrific job as an account exec at a prestigious public relations firm. Everything goes Ashley’s way. Now, she’s been given a great opportunity to advance her career: she is to plan a masquerade ball in downtown Manhattan for record mogul Damon Phillips and his company. Jake, on the other hand, is a bad luck magnet. As fate would have it, Ashley and Jake meet at the ball. There's an instant attraction between them and they are soon locked in a long lingering kiss. It will change both their lives and their luck.
What The Critics Say
"I liked the film's idea that luck is like love -- something that diminishes when you hoard it and multiplies when you share it."
Carrie Rickey PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
"Just My Luck is an old-fashioned comedy about two nice people who would fall in love if they could just get in synch."
Chris Hewitt ST PAUL PIONEER PRESS
"Take Just My Luck for what it is -- a moderately successful attempt to move Lohan away from teenage roles and into an adult one."
Ken Hanke MOUNTAIN XPRESS
"Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine make a charming star-crossed couple, and tweens and teens will find enough plot reversals to keep them hooked."
Sheri Linden HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
"Just My Luck is a safe teen movie that teens will actually like, & there are far worse things than that."
Michael Booth DENVER POST
"Lindsay Lohan is the star, and I have liked her ever since "The Parent Trap" and I like her here, too, but like many another former child star, it's time for her to move on to more challenging roles."
Roger Ebert CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
"As much as I wanted to hate this movie, I have to admit it had quite a bit of charm. I attribute that more to director Donald Petrie, who gave us the recent romantic comedies 'Miss Congeniality' and 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'."
Kevin Carr 7M PICTURES
"Lindsay Lohan will draw the femme fan crowd that, in turn, will bring their boyfriends. Don't worry guys, it's not just another teen chick flick."
Robin Clifford REELING REVIEWS
"Throw in a hot new British bubblegum band, McFly, a bit of magic, romance, humor and a happy ending, and you've got a good, old-fashioned escapist popcorn flick."

The Inside Story
I for one, am not fussed about all the fuss they're making about Lindsay Lohan. Crikey! She looked alright to me in her previous film, "Herbie Fully Loaded". Well, except for her very pronounced, you know whatties. Yes her breasts! That's right, both of them. Now before you get on your high horse, didn't Disney get into a bit of strife over her excelent, well proportioned titties? Too right they did, mate. Big, big trouble. Test audiences who trialed the film came to the conclussion that something had to be done to protect the kids of America, nay the world, from those lustful, firm, young breasts. True! I'm not making this up. I know it's hard to come to grips with but the whole world can rest easy that when it comes to Disney films, the grand old U.S of A stands as firm as Lindsay Lohan's breasts on the issue. There are two items on the top of the agenda, terrorism and Lindsay Lohan's plumpies. Disney shit itself when it got the feedback that test audiences weren't impressed by the fact that a normal teenage girl could have such attractive breasts, unless of course she was appearing in one of those awfully smutty American comedies where womens breast are all the go. And so, Disney was forced to do a bit of touching up. They made Lindays clothing a less revealing and saved the day by covering up her two biggest assests. Parents in the morally concious U.S. of A could now breathe a sigh of relief. The quick thinking Disney solution meant that their young sons would not be lusting after Lohan because of her breasts. No, they would appreciate her for the person she truly is. As for those parents who had daughters, well they could sleep soundly at night, free from the fear that any young girl the same age as Lindsay, would no longer face the prospect of being traumatized or intimidated by her breasts. But there were even wider consequence from the descision. These poorly parented children would not feel they were inadequate in any way if their breasts were smaller or differently shaped from Lindsay's. They would go on to live a normal 'American' life. Unforunately for Lohan it didn't stop there. Photos appeared in which she looked 'waif-like'. Now she was too thin. Once again, young American girls were at risk. Their parents didn't have the time to explain that some teenage girls weight can go up and down like a yo-yo, or that stress can cause many people to either gain or lose weight. Of course there was one point that they conveniently overlooked. The fact that (like their ally in the war against terrorism) America is a land where there are a lot of fat people. Oh shit! Am I allowed to say fat? Yes in the land of big fat arses, the same as in 'Oztrailyu', we've forgotten what a real size eight woman with a healthy figure looks like. How dare, they, you, me , them moralize about size when most of us (including myself) are just fat arsed bastards any way. And who pray tell, has the right to judge them for trying to keep themselves looking nice. Even worse, some sections then trot out that old red herring that being slim and looking good will lead young girls down the path to anorexia. Here in 'Oztrailyu' there have been calls to outlaw cheerleaders who have the audacity to show their bare midrift. Why? It may cause other young girls to lose selfesteem and become either bulimiac or anorexiac. What about the cheerleaders and their selfesteem? It's not their fault that half of the teenagers in their age group have either a fat guts, a big arse or both. And that doesn't mean I'm not concerned about the problems of young girls growing up, after all, I helped raise two daughters. As for Lindsay Lohan, I for one think the soon to turn nineteen year old, looks terrific in "Just My Like". I sincerely hope she feels comfortable with her body and doesn't fall prey to pressure from the media, or anybody else for that fact. That sincere hope of doing well should equally apply to her latest film "Just My Luck" which even from a guys point of view is a lot of fun. Personally, I don't give a toss what other critics think about Lohan's acting ability or "Just My Luck", I happen to think the story is a hoot and Lohan performs extremely well in this comedic lead role. "Lindsay has a sparkling comedic talent," says director Donald Petrie. "Her ability to make physical comedy flow so naturally while also being funny and charming, makes her an absolute joy to have in front of the camera." Petrie should know, after all didn't he direct Kate Hudson in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days", Sandra Bullock in "Miss Congeniality", and Julia Roberts in "Mystic Pizza"? Take a bow all those who said he did. Co-screenwriter Amy B Harris says, "Lindsay has such a warm and likable screen presence." In this role, Harris notes she "is able to bring a real sense of fun and broad physical comedy while still showing vulnerability." So what did Lohan say about taking on a lead comedic role that was also physically demanding on the young actress?
"I love comedy and I really wanted to work with Donald on this film," she said. And on the phsical demands? "You don’t realize how hard it can be until you’re actually there," she explained. "You’re reading the script and you say, 'Oh, that’ll be so much fun to do', but then you perform the action or stunt, and that’s the hard part. But it’s fun when you can just let go and free yourself. It’s like therapy in a way." In "Just My Luck", Lohan's character Ashley Albright is a luck magnet. Eveything just falls into place as if by magic. Chris Pine's character Jake Hardin on the other hand is exactly the opposite. He can't take a trip. Bad luck awaits him around every corner. "Jake is a guy from a small town who finally made it to New York City and is swimming upstream with thunderstorms and lightning to make it," Pine says. "I think the saving grace of Jake is that he’s honest and optimistic." Producer Arnold Rifkin remembers Pine's audition well. "Donald saw something in Chris’s eyes that was about heart and warmth," Rifkin remembers. "He approached the role with a wonderful, admirable spirit." There are plenty of 'bad luck' moments in the film that will have you laughing heartily but also feeling a little bit sorry for Jake who really is a decent guy. He's devoted to his ten year old cousin Katy, played by Makenzie Vega, the young Nancy in "Sin City". "Jake has accepted his rather unfortunate plight in life," says Rifkin, "being broke, looking after his young neighbor and cousin, Katy and helping her with her homework. He’s not angry. He has no concept of fate. He didn’t look for luck. He’s just assumed it's Murphy’s Law." Ashley on the other hand has no trouble making friends and has the support of her best friends Dana and Maggie, played by Bree Turner ("Bring it On Again") and Samaire Armstrong ("The O.C."), respectively. They still haven't come to grips with just how terribly lucky Ashley is. "Dana’s a bit older," says Turner, "and has been working a little, so naturally she’s wondering, 'Wait a minute! You get all of these things and I’ve been working my butt off and I should have it.' They’re not horrible to each other, but it’s just baffling to work so hard and not have the luck to get ahead, whereas Ashley gets everything she could ever hope for with very little effort." Samaire Armstrong who plays Maggie, says it's Maggie "who keeps her friends together through thick and thin. She really believes in the bond between all of her friends and cares a lot about that. She’s a struggling musician and doesn’t want any kind of success if it means compromising her friendships." "There’s a nice dynamic between the three with Ashley being the most well rounded," Turner says. "Maggie is the extreme of sweetness and I’m a bit more of the other extreme, hard-edged and intense." Missi Pyle ("Big Fish" and "50 First Dates") plays another woman in Ashley's life, her sophisticated boss, Peggy Braden. "Peggy is a very tightly wound woman," Pyle says. "Her shoes are tight; everything she does is sort of severe and bottled up." Until Peggy's introduced to Ashley's handsome and very eligible neighbour Antonio, who is played by Latin pop icon Carlos Ponce. "Everyone is shocked because Peggy is so uptight and Antonio is so easy-going, yet they really hit it off," says Pyle. Her attitude changes when Ashley's luck deserts her and Antonio's secret life is revealed. "Sometimes what makes us happy is not what we were looking for," says co-screenwriter I Marlene King and in the case of Ashley, Jake and Peggy never a truer word was spoken. Despite what some of the critics say, there is a lot of fun to be had watching "Just My Luck" and, while the films target market is obviously teen girls and young women there's plenty here to keep the guys happy too thanks to a very good performance from Chris Pine. "Just My Luck" willis ideal for a 'date' movie, a day out with girl friends or even a mother and daughter outing.
The Verdict
"Idealy aimed at the teen market, "Just My Luck" is a film I suspect, many adults will find quite entertaining and, very funny. Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine do a fine job in the lead roles. Recommended for teen girls, mother and daughter or a girlfriends day out at the flicks. And there's enough here for the guys to enjoy too. Well worth a look at. 3 STARS."
