At A Glance
"Knockaround Guys" is another of those films that seems destined to be buried beneath the weight of an awesome avalanche of big name releases. That is indeed a pity for once again, without any publicity to drive box office sales, "Knockaround Guys" is destined for an early grave. The faces in the cast are all familiar. Barry Pepper and Vin Diesel are together again [they last appeared together in "Saving Private Ryan"], John Malkovich ["Con Air", "Rounders", "Death of a Salesman"], Dennis Hopper ["Waterworld", "Speed" "Easy Rider "], Seth Green [Scott Evil in the Austin Powers films], Andrew Davoli ["Welcome to Collinwood", "The Sopranos"], Tom Noonan ["The Pledge", "Manhunter", "The Astronaut's Wife"] and Arthur Nascarella ["The Sopranos", "The X-Files", "Law & Order"]. A lot of useless comparisons have been made between this film and classics like "The Godfather" but only a fool would fall into that trap. "Knockaround Guys" is just a whacky buddy film where everything goes wrong and all the main players have criminal connections. "Knockaround Guys" is also big on loyaty and it shows best between Matty, Chris, Taylor and the bungling Johnny Marbles. "Knockaround Guys" is a film that allows its characters to grow and that they do with a rich intensity. Top that off with a reasonable storyline, plenty of action and the stark setting of a small town, dominated by its sherriff [in many ways like a western frontier town] and this is an entertaining watch. "Knockaround Guys" is the sort of film which rewards those who allow their minds to venture into its psyche.
The Story
Matty [Barry Pepper] is the only son of mobster Benny Chains [Dennis Hopper]. He's finding it impossible to go straight [not that he's ever been involved in his fathers business]. Sure he's got the skills to make it [away from the mob] but it doesn't take long for prospective employers to work out who he is related to. Left with no other choice, Matty attempts to prove to his father once and for all that he is capable of being involved with the business, after all, he really doesn't have any other options to fall back on. Matty is given the job of picking up $500,000 owed to his father by a business associate and then transporting it safely across the country. What starts out as a simple pickup and delivery job becomes a real nightmare. First the bag goes missing after it is left on the tarmac at a small airfield in Montana by courier Johnny Marbles [Seth Green]. Matty has 48 hours to find the loot but it may not be all that simple. Matty and his mates Chris [Andrew Davoli] and Taylor Reese [Vin Diesel] fly into town looking for a paper trail. Someone has the money. Someone must be spending up big. But who? It seems the local Sherriff [Tom Noonan] and Deputy Ward [Shawn Doyle] are making big plans for their retirement. Now Matty is in big trouble and time is fast running out.
The Verdict
"If mobster come buddy films are your style then "Knockaround Guys" is right up your alley. The characters are intense and interesting. The loyalty theme is exploited extremely well. Malkovich is as always a most powerful figure. Seth Green and Vin Diesel both play characters that are worlds apart but so much fun to watch. But it's Barry Pepper and Tom Noonan who provide the catalyst which in the end drives this film. Well worth a look at."
