Moneyball is based on the true story of William Lamar "Billy" Beane III: once a would-be baseball superstar who; stung by the failure to live up to expectations on the field, turned his fiercely competitive nature to management. Heading into the 2002 season, he faces a dismal situation: his Oakland A’s have lost their star players (again) to big market clubs (and their enormous salaries) and is left to rebuild his team and compete with a third of their payroll. Driven to win, Billy takes on the system by challenging the fundamental tenants of the game. He looks outside of baseball, to the dismissed theories of Bill James, and hires Peter Brand, a brainy, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist. Together they take on conventional wisdom with a willingness to reexamine everything and armed with computer driven statistical analysis long ignored by the baseball establishment. As the two forge forward, their new methods and roster of misfits rile the old guard, the media, the fans, and their own field manager, who refuses to cooperate. Forget the baseball factor. A highly entertaining film with the bonus of Brad Pitt in the lead. 4 STARS. TRAILER HERE

Even for those people who have never been to Paris, the name of the city is more than ametaphor for magic: it's almost a synonym. Certainly there's no better place on earththat Woody Allen could have chosen for his new romantic comedy than Paris. When American couple John and his wife Helen visit Paris on business, they are accompanied by their daughter Inez and her writer fiancé Gil. Gil is again smitten by Paris, regretting he didn't stay when he visited once before and hoping for inspiration to help him finish his first novel following a good run with Hollywood screenplays. After a late night walk on his own, Gil is urged by a happy crowd in a vintage car to join them at a party, which to his astonishment is full of famous writers and artists from the Paris of the 1920s, being entertained by Cole Porter at the piano. He soon meets the stunning Adriana, currently having an affair with Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein who offers to read his manuscript. Unsure of how all this happened, Gil returns to the midnight rendezvous point once more. Wonderful cast, beautiful images of Paris and Owen Wilson in good form, as is Woody Allen. 4 1/2 STARS.
