What The Critics Say
"Kids will enjoy this fast and funny comedy, but the parents will get more of the jokes."
Sean Means SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
"The real humor comes, once again from Murphy, whose Donkey is so genuinely funny and clever that he very nearly steals the film. Except that it's stolen by Banderas as a rogue Puss In Boots outlaw hired by the King to do in Shrek."
Paula Nechak SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER
"The sequel to the 2001 computer-animated hit is just as fast, funny and smart as fans were hoping it would be."
John Monaghan DETROIT FREE PRESS
"Shrek 2 is smart and silly and exceedingly beautiful to look at; it has a romantic heart and a self-deprecating wink... plus it's just plain old funny!"
Scott Weinberg EFILMCRITIC.COM
"The powers behind Shrek got it right. They pulled off the near impossible and created a sequel that’s better than the original."

It's the greatest love story ever put to film and now the sequal "Shrek 2" is set to thrill audiences all over the globe. Yes, that loveable couple of love birds Shrek and Princess Fiona along with that annoying but sweet donkey and a whole heap of new characters are just waiting to greet you and steal away your heart. Since opening in the USA, cinema-goers have been swamping the boxoffices at their local theatres. In fact, so successful has this sequal been, "Shrek 2" looks like doing business in the USA equivalent to the dollar return worldwide of "Shrek" which took the inaugural Oscar at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature. Having seen the sequal to the original I can see why everyone in the USA loves "Shrek 2". It's simple! It's very funny! The characters are so sweet! And, best of all, you come away from the theatre feeling gooey and warm all over. "Shrek 2" would melt the hardest of hearts. So what is it that makes "Shrek 2" tick? The production crew put it down to raising the bar and not settling for second best. "We wanted to do something very different from "Shrek", by widening the scope," says producer Aron Warner. "During the process, we were continually asking ourselves, 'Is this funny? Is it heartfelt? Does it have as much to say as the first movie did'". Fellow producer David Lipman concurs adding, "We didn't want to go back and re-hash the same things. We wanted to revisit this world, but have it fresh and exciting and fun as the original." With the original being so successful you'd think they would have been hard pressed to come up with something that could surpass the original, but they did. Remember that old saying, "when one door closes another opens"? Writer, director Andrew Adamson explains. "When Jeffrey Katzenberg came to me about doing a sequal, I realized we had painted ourselves into a corner as far as your typical fairy story goes." Why was that? "We'd let Shrek and Fiona get married, presumably to live happily ever after," he said. So was that a brickwall? Evidently not because as Adamson revealed, "that ended up creating a whole new story angle for us. I started thinking about what happens after marriage, the idea that you don't just marry your spouse, "he said. "You marry their whole family." But how many families expect their little princess to marry a giant, ugly ogre? Very few I suspect! "We all know that Fiona had expected to meet Prince Charming and live happily ever after," says Adamson. "Well her parents were expecting the same thing, so showing up with an ogre, as an ogre, is a pretty big shock." Well that's an understatement. This was definately unexpected and not what was planned, wasn't it?
According to Director [ that's right, there are three directors] Kelly Asbury, "Fiona's parents locked her away in a tower expecting a handsome prince to rescue her and break the curse that turned her into an ogre when the sun went down. They expected everything to go as planned, the way it usually happens in fairy tales." And we all know what went wrong, don't we kids [and adults can nod their heads too], "They hadn't counted on an ogre named Shrek coming along and breaking the curse in the reverse. Now their daughter is an ogress day and night." And that's thanks to? Shrek of course. In this second edition, Shrek, Donkey & Princess Fiona return with the addition of some new characters. Shrek fans will be pleased to hear that all three voice cast members return to reprise their original roles. The one thing the producers of "Shrek 2" were adamant about. "Our three main characters and the actors who play them are loved by our audience now," says Andrew Adamson. "They are vital to the story. No one else could have stepped into these parts; it had to be Mike, Eddie and Cameron." And who are those new characters? One you are going to instantly love is El Gato con Botas played by Antonio Banderas. Yes 'Puss in Boots' will thrill everyone. Joining the rascally pussy cat in "Shrek 2" are King Harold [voiced by John Cleese], Queen Lillian [voiced by the iconic Julie Andrews], Prince Charming [voiced by Rupert Everett], a giant Gingerbread Man and more. Finally, just as in the original, "Shrek 2" takes great fun in spoofing established fairy tales and more. The more is a segment that sends up "Mission Impossible". As for finding more fairy tales to spoof, director Conrad Vernon said, "We really dug deep into the books to pull from different fairy tales. There were a lot we hadn't used, but the problem was that some of them are so obscure, no one has ever heard of them." The final solution then? "We basically stayed with familiar fairy tales," he said, "and found new ways to turn them on their ears." They certainly did and it all adds to the wonderful magic of this second edtion in the story of Shrek. And don't despair, there are at least two more "Shrek" adventures to come.

The Story
"Blazes across the screen with mature, rapid-fire wit; genuine warmth; and rainbow-colored visual beauty." Dustin Putman, THEMOVIEBOY.COM
Shrek and his true love, his bride Princess Fiona are back from their honeymoon and ready to settle down to married life in the swamp until the news comes that King Harold and Queen Lillian have invited the lovebirds to their castle in the Kingdom of Far Far Away for a newlyweds ball. Shrek's negative to the whole thing but for Fion'a sake he begrudgingly makes the trip. Nothing goes to plan. Shrek and King Harold fail to hit it off and a huge rift developes between the two. It's no wonder. You see, with the help of the powerful Fairy Godmother, King Harold had staged Princess Fiona's original predicament so that the handsome, self consumed Prince Charming could awaken her with a kiss and everyone would live happilly ever after. The last thing King Harold wants is a large green ogre for a son-in-law. With the help of the devisive Fairy Godmother, the King sets out to destroy the bond that hold his daughter to Shrek.
The Verdict
"Everything you'd hoped it would be and more. "Shrek 2" defies the odds when it comes to sequals by actually being better than the original. The storyline has universal appeal. And those new characters? Their just smashing. One of the greatest love stories ever told. Don't miss it!!"
