It will be a sad day indeed when Jack Nicholson disappears from the big screen. Jack the bad boy, Jack the lover, Jack the cop, Jack the womanizer and Jack the 'man's man'. He's done it all and done it well. There's no stopping it for this actor many of us have grown up with and grown to love. He's a legend in his own time and a very marketable item even at 67 years of age. His record with box office hits in just the last few years must be the envy of many in Hollywood. Films as recently as "Anger Management", "About Schmidt", "The Pledge" and, of course, that academy award winning role in "As Good As It Get's". Over the years Jack has played just about every role imaginable and one must 'tip their hat to him'. The beaut thing about Jack's career is that he knows what's good for Jack is what pleases the fans, after all, they keep him in a job. So it will come as no surprise that in "Something's Gotta Give", Jacks footloose, fancy free and dating gorgeous young women, all under the age of thirty, like that honey Amanda Peet. I can hear a few groans out there from some of the more mature divorcees and I'm getting a telepathic message, not another fantasy film perpetuating the theory that all older men find women their own age uninspiring and women half their age invigorating? The answer is in some ways yes, but don't lose hope ladies for "Something's Gotta Give" is somewhat of a lesson in life for Jack's character the 63 year old Harry Sanborn. And Harry's education makes for a hell of a lot of fun and a lot of romance. But getting back to that thing about older men and young women, I notice there's a heck of a lot of women in their fourties sporting partners who are many years younger these days. It reminds me of that timeless saying, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander". Let's face it ladies, there's a lot of young guys out there with a distinct leaning towards the mature woman, or haven't you noticed it yet? But getting back to "Something's Gotta Give", the leveler for Harry Sanborn is a delightful, successful, mid fifties woman named Erica who is played by a real life honey, Dianne Keaton. Like that other mature age goddess Charlotte Rampling, Keaton oozes sex appeal and charm throughout "Something's Gotta Give". Lets face it, what woman wouldn't around that testosterone charged animal Jack. In fairness though, both Keaton and Jack are, putting it mildy, exuding a heap of chemistry. A good time to make a point that "Something's Gotta Give" is fair to both sexes. Could that be because "Something's Gotta Give" was written by, and oh me oh my, directed by a woman? yes it's true, "Something's Gotta Give" is the handiwork of Nancy Meyers, that talented lady who also gave us "What Women Want". See, you can't blame men for everything ladies.
Guilty on all counts admits Meyer when it comes to older man- young woman syndrome. Is this from personal experienence? "Pretty much everything I’ve written has paralleled something in my own life," Meyer says. "I must confess that I’m a little fascinated with the older-man-younger-woman scenario. The other thing that interested me was in a way, the opposite of all that: falling in love and emotionally opening up later in life. I just think that people falling in love late in life is as real and powerful as it is when they’re 25." But this isn't just about a relationship between a young woman and an older man is it? "Dealing with love between men and women beyond middle age wasn’t a concern," she states. "There’s a universality to what happens between Harry and Erica. Love is love, and it doesn’t matter at what age it happens, except maybe it hurts more, the older you get." And how long did this labour of love take to get to a final script? "It took me about 10 months to write it, and about four or five months into the process I called Jack and Diane and said, 'It’ll take about another five months, but I think we may have something here.'" So what did some of the main players think of the screenplay?
"It’s the battle of the sexes, which is always the same, in a certain sense", Keaton explains. "Of course, it gets more pronounced as you get older. I mean, why would a guy who dates a lot of young women, and is so happy and content with his life, fall in love with an older, demanding woman who’s every bit his equal?"
Keanu Reeves
star of the Martix Trilogy, plays Dr Julian Merce in "Something's Gotta Give". “It’s a beautiful story, beautiful script, absolutely lovely. I thought it was clever, enjoyable and something that doesn’t come around that often. There was also a freshness to it,” Reeves said. "A wonderful aspect of the script is the development of these characters who are so alive, searching to know themselves and each other. It’s refreshing, and something you don’t often see in Hollywood films."
Amanda Peet
, seen recently in the fabulous "Igby Goes Down" was determined to get the role of Marin in Meyers new film. "It’s very truthful about being single and a bit older, and there aren’t a lot of movies out there that address that in a really complex way", she noted. "Nancy’s writing is very funny, and comedy is hard. I also just thought that this script was just incredibly romantic."
And What About Jack?
According to Nancy Meyers, “Jack took direction as well as any actor I’ve ever worked with. Jack is very soulful and a master of the closeup. He finds moments to play like no one ever.
"As audience members, we’ve watched Jack do everything," says Diane Keaton
, "and he has become a legend. I knew him many years ago when we did Reds together, and now having done this was a much fuller experience because I got to know him much better. And knowing Jack is like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. You don’t know what hit you half the time. What’s it like to be Jack Nicholson? Who knows? ‘Cause there’s nobody like him, and there will never be anybody like him.
Amanda Peet
admits she was terrified when she first read opposite Nicholson. "I mean, I was shaking like a leaf," she confesses. "But the thing about Jack is that he’s so playful, alert and responsive."
"Enough cannot be said about the experience with Jack. To have worked with him 20 years ago and then to work with him now, to get to know him, be around him, see what this man is and what he brings to the plate, is extraordinary,"says Keaton.

The Story
Harry Sanborn hasn't dated a woman over the age of thirty, but that's ok. You see younger women understand that even though he's rich, successful and eligible, Harry isn't the type who wants to settle down. All that's about to change. When Harry's latest love invites him to her mothers spacious beach house for a romantic weekend Harry is very happy, until Marin's mum Erica makes an unexpected appearance. It's about to go belly up for Harry. Erica isn't too happy that her daughter is dating a sixty three year old. But then the divorced, but successful playwright Erica hasn't been getting any action for years. The stress is really getting to Harry and he wants to get the hell of there. A heart attack soon gets him out of the house, but not for long. Dr Mercer thinks that travelling isn't an option for Harry, he'd be better off recovering at, yes you guessed it, Erica's beach house. Harry Sanborn and Erica Barry are about to find out much about themselves and a whole lot about romance. Could the recovery period be the start of something special?
The Verdict
"Jack finally meets his match in this delicious romantic comedy. And who brings the 'man's man' down? That scrumptious dish Diane Keaton. Adults will get a real kick out of this one. Nicholas and Keaton are downright pleasurable fun. "Something's Gotta Give" just oozes romance. And while it may be about 'elder love', "Something's Gotta Give" certainly isn't a geriatric flick. Charming, funny, romantic entertainment."
