"Super Size Me is McBrilliant and may be one of the most important documentaries you'll ever see." ..... Emily Blunt BLUNT REVIEW
Hot on the heels of Michael Moore's "Bowling For Columbine" comes the latest offering from the USA, the critically acclaimed "Super Size Me" a no-holds barred critical, but very humerous look at life in the fat lane. Yes, from the land where everything is bigger, better and more powerful comes this true life documentary of one mans quest to conquer the highest peak. To live only on food purchased at a McDonalds Restaurant. But there were some catches. First he had a goal of 30 days to reach. Second, if the staff at any McDonald's Restaurant asked him to super size his order he could not refuse. Now that's a challenge. And it seems that Morgan Spurlock had no doubts he could meet that challenge. Meet it he did, as you will discover in "Super Size Me". But it wasn't all beer and skittles as the saying goes. The task would prove daunting in the end. But let's hear from the man himself.
"Super Size Me is one man’s journey into the world of weight gain, health problems and fast food. It’s an examination of the American way of life and the influence that has had on our children, the nation and the world at large. When I called my friend Scott Ambrozy (the DP for the film) on Thanksgiving 2002 and told him my idea for Super Size Me, he laughed uncontrollably and said, "Wow, that’s a really great bad idea." That would go on to be our mantra, especially during the month when I found myself feeling worse than I ever thought possible: This is a great bad idea." And as Morgan explains, in the period leading up to the start of his great junk food oddesy "you couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing about the "obesity epidemic in America" or of the girls who were suing McDonald’s. It seemed as though all of America and the world had suddenly gotten 'Fat Happy.'" Spurlock, a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, has conceived and created more than 60 projects during his 12 years in the industry. Everything from commercials to music videos to television shows. And his talents don't stop there. "Spurlock’s 1999 full-length play, The Phoenix
, won the Audience Favorite Award at the New York International Fringe Festival. He subsequently picked up Best Play honors at the Route 66 American Playwrighting Competition in January, 2000." And in 2000, "Spurlock’s corporate image piece for the Sony Corporation, "Do You Dream in Sony?," won the Chicago Film Festival for Corporate Production and the US Film and Video Festival for top Multi-Image Production." Sadly for cinema-goers, it would be another 3 years before Spurlock made his feature film debut. Many will agree that the wait was worth it.

Morgan revealed that he didn't want to produce something along the lines of the norm. No, he was looking for something different. Perhaps something that would really capture the imagination. "I had always wanted my first feature film to be something different," he said, "off-center, original. We found all of the above and more with Super Size Me." That more would be the struggle to stay with his goal of spending thirty days on on a diet of items chosen from the menu at the nearest McDonald's Restaurant. So how tough was it sticking with the plan? Trying to stay on track for what must have become thirty, very tedious, testing, soul destroying days? . "It started off as such a fun experience, you can see the jubilation on my face on Day One, but as the days pass," he notes, "the reality of what this food does to you really comes across on screen." And did it become a struggle that daily grind? "The days couldn’t go by fast enough for me," he said. And in the end what did he really think? "I just wanted this experience to be over." By film's end, most of the audience will be just as glad the journey is over, for while "Super Size Me"
is a damn good watch, it is a touch long. Never the less, "Super Size Me" is a film easy to recommend to viewers who love quality doco's which virtually come across with all the feel of a big studio commercial production.
Trivia
Morgan Spurlock founded the production company The Con which created the hit web show I Bet You Will in 2000, and jumped the program from the Internet to MTV in 2002, becoming the first show ever to do so. After producing 53 episodes for the network, the company took its profits and used them to fund their first feature film, the fast food documentary "Super Size Me".

The Story
"Mordantly funny and trenchantly sobering, this is a Big Mac attack you can sink your teeth into. And then it will bite you back." Nell Minow MOVIE MOM
Producer/director/guinea pig Morgan Spurlock had just finished a full-on Thanksgiving dinner at the family home in West Virginia when he came up with a brainwave. He had just watched the news which featured a story about two girls who had decided to sue the McDonalds Fast Food chain because eating the food from their family restaurants had made them fat. That news item provided Morgan Spurlock with the idea for "Super Size Me". He would live on nothing but McDoanld's fast food for a month. The catch was though, if the staff asked him to Super Size his order he couldn't refuse. The unanswered question on everyones lips was, could Morgan Spulock survive for thirty days on fast food.
The Verdict
"It's a heck of a lot of fun but, as everyone telling me, the biggest drawback is that after seeing this insightful documentary you're left with a huge urge to rush out and hit the nearest takeaway restaurant. No, not macca's but the finger lickin good ones, who must be really welcoming the extra trade. You'll laugh, gasp , cringe and be shocked. Sound like a horror movie? It is. Could have been titled "Invasion of the Body Fatters". A load of fun with a very timely message. Stop it or you'll get fat!"
