"The Terminal is quintessential Spielberg: perfectly cast, technically breathtaking, sentimental to the point of being one sugar cube away from gooey and extremely pleasurable to watch." ..... [Moira MacDonald SEATTLE TIMES]
If there is one thing that truly defines the latest Steven Spielberg movie it is simply this; "The Terminal" is unashamedly, without a doubt, truly 'feel-good' experience. Many would find it hard to imagine, that so much enjoyment could be derived from a film set in an airport terminal, but it's true. Why is this hard to believe? Because this is the one place most people hate the thought of being stuck in. Executive producer Andrew Niccol came up with the initial concept for the film and then developed the story with screenwriter Sacha Gervasi. "I thought it was a brilliant place to start in creating a scenario that most people would never believe could actually happen," Gervasi recalls. The script for "The Terminal" eventually made its way on to the desk of acclaimed director Spielberg. "It was the last script I read, and it made me forget the five scripts I’d read before it," he said. And his intial reaction to the concept? "I thought it was an amazing idea." At this stage though, Spielberg was only looking for product for his studio and had no thought of directing the film. That changed when Jeff Nathanson came on board. He'd previously worked with Spielberg on the film, "Catch Me If You Can". Nathanson and Gervasi's finished product was put to Spielberg who now wanted to direct the project. "I had an immediate affinity for Viktor’s story," he says. "I believe all of us have felt a little bit like Viktor at some time in our lives; this displaced person in search of a life." Parkes had other thoughts on what attracted Spileberg. "I think Steven was very interested in and challenged by the human comedy of this story," Parkes notes. "It’s something he hasn’t done too much of, but is very good at. Not unlike "Catch Me If You Can", it’s the kind of movie that allows him to stretch his comedic muscles." But was that all? Was there something else that grabbed Spielbergs attention? "This is one of those stories that is really about the smallest moments of human interaction," producer Walter F Parkes said, "and Sacha’s script kept the story very intimate." And that story is? "It’s about a man encountering a handful of people in a very closed environment," he said, "and yet there’s this impression that, in a way, he’s meeting what America is in this place. I think that makes the story truly interesting." Spielberg says there is another reason he wanted to become personally involved. He says that after "Catch Me If You Can", he "wanted to do another movie that could make you laugh and cry and feel good about the world. I wanted to do something else that could make us smile. This is a time when we need to smile more, and Hollywood movies are supposed to do that for people in difficult times." And I have to say, as with "Catch Me If You Can", Spielberg has delivered once again. And what can I say about the performance of Tom Hanks as Viktor Navorski? Best since "Forrest Gump". But here's something to finish on that really puts Hanks performance in perspective. This comes from Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, who says; "Tom made all the elements of his character so real that there were times when I would forget I had a line because I was so intently watching him work."
What They Said ...
Steven Spielberg
"Of all the movies we’ve done together, this was the most inventive I’ve ever seen Tom be on the set."
Tom Hanks

"I read the screenplay and thought it was almost too good to be true."
Catherine Zeta-Jones

"I think Amelia’s vulnerability is what attracted me to the part. I love the trust she puts in people; even when she gets hurt, she has a tiny iota of faith that it’s going to work out."
Stanley Tucci

"Dixon is not a villain. He is just doing his job, but he does it so well, he convinces us that he is the villain. Dixon has a lot at stake, especially now when he’s being considered for a job he’s always wanted."
Catherine Zeta-Jones
on Tom Hanks.
"When you are on the set with him day to day, you see how refined his craft is. He really is an artist. There is something so subtle and minimalistic in what he does, but it’s so clear and emotional."
Steven Spielberg
on Zeta-Jones.
"It was just a beautiful characterization. I am so proud of Catherine for the work she did on this movie."
Steven Spielberg
on Stanley Tucci.
"Stanley Tucci was my first choice to play the part of Dixon. I never imagined anyone else. Then he came to the set and just overwhelmed me with how naturally he played the role."
Steven Spielberg
on 85 year old actor Kumar Pallana.
"Kumar had the part the minute he walked in the door."
Catherine Zeta-Jones
on the incredible set.
"When I first walked on the set, which you had to see to believe, I turned to Steven and said, ‘I’m breathless.’ It literally took my breath away. It had that real feel to it. It even smelled like an airport."
Tom Hanks
on the set
"The set was magical. The first time I saw it, it was six times larger than I expected it to be. It was hard to comprehend how they had gotten it all done."

The Story
"At a time when formula filmmaking is the rule in Hollywood, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are offering us something delightfully different... and I say bravo." [Leonard Maltin HOT TICKET]
Meet Viktor Navorski. He's travelled all the way from Eastern Europe to the big apple so that he can fullfil a promise he has made to his dying father. Arriving at JFK airport he discovers his homeland is no longer recognised by the US Immigration Department due to a coup by rebels who want to oust the present government. With Krakozia no longer an official country and any travel documents useless, Viktor is stuck at the airport. With little understanding of the English language, a fistfull of food vouchers and his luggage, Viktor is left to fend for himself. He can go anywhere he likes. As long as he doesn't leave the airport.
The Verdict
"Tom Hanks delivers another unforgetable character as Viktor Navorski in one of the best feel good movies of all time, "The Terminal". This heartfelt, decidedly romantic tale is a beauty thanks to a superb cast who never fail to deliver. Viktor Navorski is another fine example of how humankind can triumph against great odds! Hate airports? Well, this is one time you won't mind being stuck in "The Terminal". Recommened for those who love a feelgood movie that delivers oodles of pleasurable viewing moments. Like "Forrest Gump", Hanks's Viktor Navorski will charm his way into your heart."
