If there is one thing I really hate it is this, I hate going into a scarey film knowing that they are going to throw every trick in the book at you to make you jump and even though you try hard not to, the bastards get you every time. I don't know how many times they did it to the audience in "Wrong Turn" but they got me and my friend. One thing I must say right from the start is this, "Wrong Turn" is modelled on those "B" grade horror movies of the 70's, those cunningly designed productions that don't go for big names in the cast, contain much rip snortin' decapitation, horrible deaths and those stupid little things that sneak up out of the blue to make you just about wet your pants. You know what I mean, like when some idiot puts their head around a corner and the next minute it's flying across the room spraying blood everywhere or when they finaly think they've made a successful escape and they get their throat cut. Don't you just love it? It flys in the face of everything that society stands for yet some people, no not some, lots, just love being spooked nearly to death. Like, people are scared of roller coasters but they still ride them. People want to go on the ferris wheel but whoa betsy, how they panic when it comes to a halt and they are right at the top. Or what about that age old favourite at every show, "The Ghost Train". We know there's really no ghosts in there but still we pay good money to have some bastard jump out in a dark section and scare the living daylights out of us by grabbing us on the shoulder. Why do we do it? Buggered if I know but it can be a lot of fun. And so it is with "Wrong Turn", a film which also reinforces that age old law "never marry your sister". No-one in their right mind would after seeing "Wrong Turn", even if they did live up in "them thar hills". So what is the premise behind "Wrong Turn"?
According to producer Stan Winton
it goes like this, "Remember how you felt about going back into the water after you saw "Jaws"? After seeing "Wrong Turn", you’ll feel the same about camping in the woods, I guarantee it." I'm agree with you on that one Stan but what did director Rob Schmidt think. "Stan’s a bit of a paradox, too. He’s a sort of father figure to many of us on this movie, a really loving guy who seemingly has no issues because he ‘gets it all out’ by killing people on film. I mean he absolutely loves the horror genre and his passion is why it is thrilling for us to work with him." Even the cast are full of praise for Winton. Take Jeremy Sisto, "His accomplishments guarantee a project made with enthusiasm, quality and precision. There are a few things in this film that will haunt people for a while after they see it. Stan is largely responsible for that." That goes for leading lady and well known small screen star Eliza Dushku who said, "Stan is the reason I did this movie, I was not interested in making a "monster" movie, and I told Stan that in our initial meeting. Well then he held up the pictures of the mountain men and explained that these characters are human just like the rest of us. They are not monsters they are real and people like this do exist. The concept he laid out convinced me that this would be a fun, really creepy film." That's thanks to the very talented makeup artists who spent several hours each day working on Julian Richings, Garry Robbins and Ted Clark transforming them into the horrible killers Three-Finger, Saw-Tooth and One-Eye.
There is in fact a terrific sense of realism to "Wrong Turn" in particular the moments spent inside the mountain mens cabin. Production designer Alicia Keywan can be thanked for that and you'll know what I mean when you see "Wrong Turn", because there are some truly terrifying scenes here. "Alicia is as brilliant as any production designer I have ever worked with and I don’t say that lightly," Winston said. "The terror in "Wrong Turn" goes beyond the three mountain men. The cabin set Alicia designed is frightening because it is so real and filled with the horrific details that tell us about these terrible men. "What’s so great about it is that when you walk into the cabin, it doesn’t feel like a movie set", he explained. "It was constructed as a real cabin, with different rooms and entrances and exits. All fours walls are there. It truly felt as if you were stepping into the ‘family home’ in West Virginia. We even constructed it outdoors at a local Toronto park and situated it between a dirt road and a river bed. Audiences will believe that this place has been there for years. I’m sure the walls would talk of bloodthirsty carnage."
That's a fact. Lets leave the last word on "Wrong Turn" to cast member Kevin Zegers to reinforce the fact that this really is a scary movie and that no-one should doubt Wintons intent. "Bottom line, people who know Stan’s work know they’re going to get the crap scared out of them."
The Story
Chris Finn has just three hours to get to Raleigh for an important job interview. Everything is going fine until he finds that traffic is at a standstill on the highway. It seems a chemical spill will delay the opening of the highway for a few hours. Chris can not afford to wait, he must make that appointment. He backs up and takes a dirt road, finds a gas station and after checking out a local road map decides on using the mountain road. Minding his own business he rounds a bend and slams into a Range Rover which is parked across the road in a blind spot. Dragging himself out of his wrecked Mustang, he discovers the vehicle occupants are ok and that someone has laid a barbedwire trap across the road slashing their vehicles four tyres. Leaving Evan and Francine to watch the vehicles, Chris,Jessie, Carly and Scott head off into the woods to find help and a phone. They discover a cabin, surrounded by wrecked vehicles. But that's not all. Inside the cabin they find gruesome trophies from a killing spree. What they don't know is that Evan and Francine have been brutally butchered by three hillbillies. They are about to meet the killers under the most terrifying circumstances.
The Verdict
"Whether your a terror freak or somebody who just loves having the livin' crap scared out of you, "Wrong Turn" will keep you jumping, squirming and grimacing in horror at the antics of these mutant hillbillies and their hapless victims. Word of warning, don't jump up as soon as the film ends. By the end of "Wrong Turn" its hard to work out who is the most relieved to have survived, the characters or the audience. "Wrong Turn is blood curdling, screaming, gruesome fun. How many ways can you die? Find out in "Wrong Turn""
