By now their lead had been extended to over 4 minutes and all five riders were sharing the load as they headed for the next big climb before a super fast descent into rural scottsdale. The peleoton had failed to respond to the attack and the lead moved out to six minutes fifteen seconds and at its best, some nine minutes plus over the main bunch. Down the slippery descent from the climb the riders were faced with mud and loose gravel on the corners many of which were off camber making it very technical indeed. Into scottsdale for the only sprint of the day and here brent dawson picked up the bonus on offer in front of a large band of locals gathered down the main street to catch the big race as it sped through town.
While the five headed over the next KOM just 11 km east of scottsdale the german riders had decided it was now time to chase in earnest and moving to the front they they took control of the race. the pace was awesome as they set about bringing back the big lead in just that would not see the breakaway shut down till the top of Weldsborough pass at the 125km mark. By now the weather had taken a turn for the worse with a sharp drop in temperature as the rain moved in. Yellow jersey holder Robert Tighello was making sure that he covered every move made by the international riders as he worked to retain the yellow jersey. There was fierce determination in the chasers which really became evident when one of the hard working russians punctured. The gremans responded to his misfortune with a solid attack that strung all the riders out.
At the top of the last KOM the race was finally back together as the riders hurtled down the steep descent to the valley below. Tighello was in trouble having to change bikes just 20 kilometres from the end. It was an undersized bike which looked very uncomfortable for the yellow jersey holder, but the team worked hard to effect repairs and he was still in the race after a quick changeover.
It was a large group of riders who made the last right hand turn into the main street at St Helens and they lined up for the sprint with just 800 metres left to go. In a close finish that went to the camera
