If there was one stand out point about the Bicycle Express-SASSSA Cycling Tour of Victor it was this, it didn't matter what equipment you wore or rode, it was a great opportunity to promote cycling to secondary school students who appeared to be enjoying every moment of the two days on Adelaides south coast playground.
Day one consisted of two stages, the first a road race and the second a time trial. Stage one got under way at 12:30pm as the first of the riders headed off along Airport Road for a finish on the Goolwa-Mt Compass Road with distances and courses chosen so that everyone had a fair crack at finishing in a reasonable time. These races were contested over distances of 10-15KM for intermediate and novice riders, while the "elite " and more experienced riders were given a far more testing course of 20KM that included a start on Flagstaff Hill Road. By the time the last group were away, everything was running smoothly with riders strung out along Airport Road. Some were obviously enjoying the challenge of just making the distance, while others prefered the social opportunities that come with being left behind by the hard chargers. But for all the differences in abilities, when it came to the end of stage one there were not big time differences between the groups.
Lunch provided an opportunity to fuel up ready for stage two the "race of truth". You guessed it, a time trial. Heck, what sort of a tour would it be without a time trial. This one utilized Airport Road and covered a distance of just 7.5KM, enough to give every rider a good shot at producing their best time. Departing at 30 second intervals it wasn't long before the road was and endless stream of riders. With 82 competitors, everything went well and finished off a great first day on tour. Now came the hard part, keeping the enthusiastic bunch under control for a sleep over at St Lukes in nearby beautiful Port Elliot. Parents, I can assure you that they were all angels and I am told they were sound asleep by 8:30PM. Yeh, sure they were. And if you believe that you'll believe those reports of pigs flying at Port Elliot too. But they were all very well behaved, according to one of the race stalwarts (and favourite teacher)Mr Dave Gomer.
