Day two provided a real challenge with stage three a road race at Port Elliot, followed by stage four, a criterium at Victor Harbour on a closed circuit along the foreshore. Both courses were well chosen, in particular the "A" grade mens which included a 8km "KOM" that sorely tested this bunch. Distances for the road races ranged from 10-27KM through the township and were completed in fairly quick time by the riders with some good bunch sprints. I had an added bonus of following the "A" men on the climb up Crowsnest Road, a nasty piece of climbing that has one saving grace, spectacular views of the marvellous south coast. That is if you happen to be in a car or parked at the lookout for believe me, this is one very testy climb as the bunch found out. Dane Cheers broke a chain on the main part of the climb while Greg Clift & James Goldsmith got dropped big time. But so did the others when Luke Bossy put the hammer down and picked up a big time bonus at the end of the stage.
So it was off to Victor, lunch, a well deserved rest for the riders and then into the criterium. Gee there was some good racing in the afternoon session with everyone having a real go. It was great to see the riding skills of those that took part too, because they didn't slacken off a real lot, even for the tight corners on the "hot dog" course. There was only one very minor incident when a rider came unstuck, but he was soon back in the thick of things. Condisering some of the competitors rode mountain bikes I think it was a damn good show.
At the end of the day it was a very successful tour thanks to the support of all the sponsors, the SACF officials, teachers, parents and students. And, there were plenty of prizes to go around. I myself had such a good time I can't wait till next year. So I'll close by saying "see you in 2001 and safe riding till then".
