Once again the finely tuned handicapping at Outer Harbour proved to turn on a exciting finish for Doug Drummond / Ron Hood Outer Harbour 52km Handicap held on Sunday 30th September. As part of the 2001 Impact Internet Services Consistency Awards, Doug Kaesler (VLCC handicapper ) was on target in calculating that all Div 1 groups would come together in the final kilometre of 52 kilometres of racing. Limit was given a 9 minute start from scratch, with block group at 2 and half minutes.
The scratch combination of Peter Moore, Tony Mcloughlin, Gray Davis and Andrew Kuhl had their work cut out from the start as they would have to slice almost 2 minutes off the time previously set 2 weeks prior to catch the leaders. Scratch picked up the block bunch at 27 kilometres ( block bunch were caught by train gates on lap one ) and still couldn't see the next group which started with a 4m30s advantage. Both backmark groups then progressed and worked hard together ,and at the bell lap, the gap was at 1:45 to the leading group which contained the remainder of the field. This was now to be very close if the backmarkers would catch the leaders in the dying 10 kilometres.
Within the final kilometre the backmarkers caught the leaders to make way for a 40-50 rider dash for the line. With 250 metres to go Peter Moore launched his move with yours truly on his wheel. I was lucky enough to gain another win much from Peter's lead out with Trevor Skinner 3rd and the return of Gary Davis in 4th place. Bill Drodge also rode well and has shown much improvement to take 5th place and Shane Kelly in 6th place. Fastest time was recorded at 1hr09m13secs for the 52 kms. Div 1 Results
1st and Fastest - Tony Mcloughlin 1:09:13
2nd- Peter Moore
3rd - Trevor Skinner
4th - Gary Davis
5th - Bill Drodge
6th - Shane Kelly
Wilson takes Points
30/9/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
An assertive Paul Wilson produced a compelling ride to take out Division One in the Bicycle Express Special Club Handicap Event this Sunday .Paul has not made the trip down south much this season and this victory was his first with the club and will cost him time from the handicapper in future events. It was not a day for the scratch riders. Calm conditions and the forming of a large pack of riders from the 9 and 11 minutes groups on the first lap of Kangarilla loop made it very difficult for the smaller scratch groups to make up the time. Remarkably the fastest time did not come from the Scratch group but from the two minute starters with Carl Mcmillian perhaps making a claim for a later start in future weeks taking the prize.
All the placings came from within the 9 and 11 minute groups who worked well together as a large group from very early on. Second place went to an in form Justin Dawson marking his tenth placing with the club this season. He featured in Division Two in the last divisional handicap event in the Mega Bike Twin Peaks but this is clearly his best result in this successful season. Ian Davis riding a new bike ( purchased from the sponsor Bicycle Express ) looks at home in Division One and continues to impress taking his ninth place in club events this year. Steve Hazel continues to take time off himself by his improvement. He has featured in the places despite moving through the grades quickly. His third place in Division One one of his best results following his fourth in the last two division handicap in Division two in the Twin Peaks event and a second and third in D grade and C grade in scratch events this year. John Amos impressed with a fifth place after several respectable results in scratch events in D and C grade this year. This placing was his twelfth of the season. Clearly a rider to watch.
Division Two was no kinder to the scratch riders. The winning pack formed on the Kangarilla Hill when the 10 minute group of Joe Skibinski, Barry Timmins and Dave Beaumount where caught by a hard working 8 minute group of Chris Powell, Laurie Pearce, Helen Roach and Leah Wright. This group caught the front markers just before the Gaffney Road rise. Kevin Dyer who had a short break on his starting group rode strongly to claim fifth on the line and his first placing with the club.
In the sprint the pack was led out by an ever improving Chris Powell with Barry Timmins, Laurie Pearce and Helen Roach hanging on. On the line a very clever pass on the outside by Laurie Pearce after Timmins and Powell had broke a little too early gave Laurie the well deserved honours. Laurie is having a very impressive season this result being his fifth first. Chris Powell once again claimed a respectable result making it four in September. His riding has really taken off since he took victory on the 16/9 in D grade in the Koffee and Snax scratch races. Barry Timmins produced his eighth result for the season taking second on the line despite claiming he was sick at the start and was just going round to keep the legs in. Helen Roach who worked hard all day with the group deservedly took out her first placing for the season.

TAYLOR'S PRIZE
23/9/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Peter Taylor took out a intensively fought victory on a very challenging course in the Velo City & Weatherall Electrical Scratch races in hot and windy conditions this Sunday. His win in A grade was his first for the season. Peter will be pleased with his success as he has not featured in the results as often as he would have liked this year. He claimed third place in division one in the Natural Flooring handicap back in last November. Much more familiar with success where the other place getters with Peter Moore taking his sixth placing for the season, Blair Howell his fifth. Tony McLoughlin made a welcome return to the results board to take fourth to add to his victory this year in the Milang Open Classic.
B Grade followed the pattern of the days races in all sections with riders breaking away on Peters Creek and Wickhams Hill. Carl McMillian by taking first recorded his best result in club events this year. Other place getters Claude Altin, Ray Deed and Peter Fry continued to add to their impressive records.
New rider Mark Shields recorded an impressive first in C grade as his maiden success in club events this year. No doubt he will be one to watch out for. Ian Davis scored his eighth result this season by taking second today with Steve Hazel claiming another place to add to his three. Fourth place went to new rider Andrew Loose for his first achievement of perhaps many in the future.
D grade was the only division to alter the script on the day with winner Stefan Drewes taking the victory on the line after being dropped on Wickhams Hill. In his speech he was very complimentary to fellow rider Dave Symmonds ,who finished fourth, for his excellent work up the climb which enabled him to get back on the breakaway group of place getters Eddie Collins and Neil Thies.
E grade had a group of seven break on the first climb but Wickhams Hill proved who had the strength in the end. A very happy Leah Wright took her first victory in scratch events this year from a fast finishing Caroline Salisbury, Chris Powell and Laurie Pearce. Caroline Salisbury claimed her fourth placing in scratch events this season with Chris Powell winner from last week showing that he is coming in to some strong form. Laurie Pearce continues to impress adding to his eight other outstanding results since November last year.

Howell too Potent
16/9/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Blair Howell robustly took out the A Grade in the Koffee And Snax Scratch Races after taking control away from a strong breakaway on the first Kangarilla loop of the race. Club road race Category four Champion Howell had been with a group of five riders who all featured in the places today. The intensity of the race increased on the second Kangarilla loop with Ray Deed, John Giles and Sid Carter putting on a forceful surge to try to reel in Howell. It was to no avail with Carter and Giles fighting it out for second on the line. Giles was too strong and continues his recent run of impressive results.
B grade was won by Josef Hanuszewicz producing his best result this season with new rider Mark Schulz, the consistent John Amos, Justin Dawson and Ian Davis ( his eighth placing this season and looking like a future winner ) taking the places.
C grade was won by the impressive Geoff Hillman with Eddie Fabian who was dropped several times fighting back to take third. Dave Ward took second to add to his impressive list of results in C grade scratch races this season with Wayne Stephens and Dave Symmonds continuing their impressive runs to take the remaining places.
D grade winner Chris Powell broke through as predicted a few weeks ago. The "I can't sprint for peanuts" rider surprised the breakaway group of Kate Logan, Laurie Pearce and Barry Timmins with a spirited push to the line.

Tuckey Takes A Slice
9/9/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Doug Tuckey took a big slice off his handicap winning this hard fought club handicap race over a difficult and demanding course. This is Doug's most impressive result this year and he was clearly very pleased with his win. The pack chasing could not catch Doug and he was the deserving winner. Many in form riders feature in the places. Vicki Birks continues to impress adding to her long list of successes this year. John Amos featured in the places for the eleventh time this season and is fittingly rated as one of the most consistent riders in the club.
The race was not without drama with Paul Weatherall sent to hospital via ambulance following a suspected heart attack. He fortunately is OK but will have to wait for some tests before resuming competitive riding. The club wishes him well in his recovery.

Logan beats field & weather
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Ladies Category Five Club Road Race Champion Kate Logan kept a rugged formidable racing field at bay to win this weeks club handicap race in atrocious conditions on Sunday. The field was diminished as the day went on with conditions forcing many riders to pull out. Kate has to be commended for her courage given the difficult ride. "It was a dam wet day" she stated after the race and was obviously pleased with her first success this season in club handicap events. Her best result besides her outstanding Club Road Race title has been a second place in E grade in the Dean Stephens Scratch event in June. Kate began the race with Brain Else and together they kept the following threatening field at bay for most of the race. Kate made a break with only a small portion of the race to go and this was her winning move as Brian was caught on the line by the pack made up of riders from the one and eleven minute groups. Peter Fry and Steve Nash rode convincingly to take second and third. They both began together one minute in front of the scratch riders who fell in to the DNF category with many others today. Peter took the best time of the day with 1:20:46 averaging 38.25km/hr. He continues with his inspiring season of results adding to a recent victory in a club handicap event in early August as well as his club road race and time trial titles. Kate had to work very hard to keep this in form rider at bay. Steve Nash has not featured as often as he would like this season his best result being a third place in A grade in the Milang Open Classic. If he can achieve this in the conditions on offer today his name will continue to be in the placings and a victory can not be far away. The remaining places have been taken up by riders with pretty admirable records of late. Barry Bullivant, "You must be mad to ride in this weather", who was very effective at Port Broughton last weekend taking two second places led home the eleven minute group of Peter Blackburn and Dave Symmonds along with Chris Powell the only survivor from the 16 minute group who joined them on the second lap. Blackburns' list of results continues to progress with his tenacious style. He almost joined the list of riders who did not start but once again showed finesse to take a very creditable sixth. Dave Symmonds has featured in the placings regularly this season and continues to threaten promising even further achievements. Chris Powell hung on positively to produce his best placing this season in club events. Taking out ninth and tenth where two names that have featured consistently this year in events. Norman Hoy chalked up his eleventh result of the season and Justin Dawson continued to influence adding to his long list of successes this year.

Taylor wins Broughton
this report thanks to ..... Tony McLoughlin
The 2001 Port Broughton attracted more entries this year due to the fact it would be a 2 division race. With pouring rain and gusty winds all morning on the drive up to Pt Broughton, this did appear to deter many scratchings, as this race was a key fixture for lucrative Impact Award points.
With 10 minutes to go before we rolled off the line, the rain had stopped, the clouds opened up, the sun came out, leaving us with a slight southerly wind. I was one of 3 riders starting off the back mark, and our immediate objective was to chase down 2nd scratch bunch containing 7 riders at 2 and half minutes.
Both my hard working co-riders ( Peter Moore and Peter Taylor ) , which are also friends and team mates, set off with what I thought, was a cracking tempo. For those that wonder what it feels like starting off the scratch mark with the entire field some kilometres ahead, it hurts. Even when you are relatively fit, it still hurts. Peter Moore and Peter Taylor and myself do not talk at all once we get going. We all know what has to be done and we try to conserve all energy for the pedals. The head wind for 40kms to the turn-a-round did suit us and we picked up Greg Chivers ( he missed his start bunch ) in the first 5 kms and shortly after Peter Williams. Both were assisting when possible to help us chase, with Peter Williams showing glimpses of good form. We soon had the 2nd scratch bunch in sight and in just over 20 kms had caught them. By this time we were only several hundred metres from the next bunch. By the 30km mark we had pulled in all groups except for the limit ( 14min ) and 2nd limit ( 12.30,in ) bunch. By this time, the speed was hovering around 50km/h mark-plus into the head wind and knew we would be closing the gap quickly on the leaders. At the 40km turn, conflicting time splits were given to us, but I guessed we were about 1 and half minutes behind the leaders. The " Big Fella", Pete Taylor, wound it up quickly after the turn and several riders lost contact with the high pace. However, the impetus to chase was over as we knew would catch the leaders soon.
At the 52km mark the leaders were caught, and immediately several attacks went by the scratch riders. After a few attacks, chasers and counters, Peter Taylor leapt away from the remaining bunch of some 15 or so riders, that had no interest in chasing. Both Peter Moore and myself tried a few times to get across to our team mate, but were marked immediately and gave up the chase. By the time we approached the finish and the sleepy town of Port Broughton, Peter Taylor had a 40sec advantage and was not to be caught taking first and fastest time.. Back to the bunch. With 500m to go there was a late attack by Greg Chivers and Peter Moore chased with the bunch on his wheel. Greg was caught 200m to the line and Mal Clasom won the bunch sprint for 2nd place. I was third followed by R Capelli, R Staeher, B Brosnan, T Skinner, S Nash, P Moore and in 10th P Northcott. This was a fantastic result for our team. Also like to add that this race should be a must each year as it was well organized, a good course and it's a very social time if you stay the night.

Osmond tastes victory at last
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Russell Osmond took his first victory in club events this year in a demanding sprint for the line from in form Peter Blackburn in very difficult riding conditions. Russell was very happy at the presentations claiming he had been waiting for this for quite a while. His best placing prior to Sundays result in handicap events was an eighth place in back in April. His record has been impressive suggesting a victory was not far away with a very creditable second in C grade in the World Vision Charity Event in March and a third in Division two at Back Valley last month.
Peter Blackburn continues to imprint his majestic style on the field. His record this season has been genuinely noteworthy with gold medals in his age division in the Club Roadrace and Time Trial Championships and a victory in the Trek Cycles Event in E grade in May. The sprint for the line was a two rider bout with one having to miss out. Peter gave it his best but just missed on the day. Running in for third and fourth was the improving Barry Timmins and imposing Dave Symmonds. Both these riders had their chance for the line taken from them by a large turning truck at the top of McMurtrie Road.
Russell Osmond began the race with the 14 minute group with Dave Symmonds, Paul Tangey and Peter Blackburn. The group worked its way resolutely through the markers picking up Barry Timmins and Chris Powell on the second climb out of Kangarilla. This small pack worked as a group and picked up the front markers on Oakley road with the scratch and later groups hot in pursuit.
Todays race was difficult with strong winds and rain making the climb out of Kangarilla difficult. Tony Wright, Leah Wright and Brian Edwards all performed very well to claim top ten places with Tony looking like the winner until his shoelace got caught in the chain. They record their first places in club events this year. Brain Else and Leah Wright deserve recognition. They began with the 26 minute group and had a chance with only a kilometer to go but they where taken up by the fast following pack but managed to continue to fight and hang on to claim places ahead of the scratchies.
Sid Carter led home the late starters in style taking tenth with Tony Mcloughlin running the fastest time on the day with an average speed of 39.123km/hr.

Fry Sizzles
Mc Laren Vale-Willunga circuit Handicap RR 57km - 12/8/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Peter Fry took out Sundays Handicap Club event in a demanding massed sprint finish for the line amongst a large pack of riders. Perfect riding conditions produced a fast race with the Scratch riders catching a fast moving pack on the final run down the Willunga road. Fastest time on the day went to scratch rider Brenton MacDonald who finished second on the line. His time of 1:28:42 was at a mean 38.9km/hr average.
Fry's victory continues his good run of results this year. In his age division he has won both the Club Road Race Championship and Time-trial as well as taking first place in B grade in the Remembrance Day Scratch race and the Milang Open Classic in April. This marks his fifth first placing since the Anniversary race last year.
Brenton MacDonald continues as a force to be looked out for once again taking the fastest time but just getting pipped at the post for the major placing. His record this season is equally impressive with the Category Two Club Time Trial Championship under his belt and a string of creditable results in Handicap and scratch events as well as a recent third in his age division in the Club Road Race Championships in June.
The race was fast with a large pack of riders from the 7, 9 , and 12 minute groups forming at McLaren Flat on the second lap. This pack had around twenty riders and looked like they were going to take out the event. This group featured a number of in form riders Geoff Hillman, Russell Osmond, Barry Bullivant, Peter Blackburn, Paul Tangey and Laurie Pearce to name a few. But behind a decisive force was quickly reeling them in.
The 4 minute group of Barry Smith, Norman Hoy and Keith Sherring had been vigorously working its way through catching the 5 minute group in front on the first lap and reaching the large pack on the second lap on Strout Road. Joining them in the pursuit was Bob Seymour, Eddie Collins, Justin Dawson, and Mike Wilson.
This group then worked together holding off the scratch riders group until the last lap on the Willunga Road. It was a tough call on the line with riders having to nominate places and a very large bunch crossing with the same time.

Dawson Soars Home
Mc Laren Vale-Kangarilla circuit Handicap RR 48km - 5/8/01
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Justin Dawson won a tense sprint in very challenging riding conditions to take his second win for the season with the club. His victory backs up his impressive success in winning D grade in the Dean Stephens Scratch event in June. His recent form in club handicap events suggested that he would soon be on the winners list after a confident fourth placing in the handicap event at the start of July. Justin grabbed the win from a group of six riders who had been led out by an unlucky Eddie Fabian who hung on but just missed out on a placing. Second placed Barry Bullivant must unquestionably break through for a win soon. His record this year is steady and reliable with this result making a trio of second places in Club Handicap events and a Third place in the World Vision Charity event in D grade his best in scratch.
Mike Wilson followed up his third place in the Apollo/Raceline Scratch event in D grade just missing on the line. He has established that he will be one to watch in the weeks to come.
Todays winners mostly came from the 10 minute group. The race was run in very tricky conditions with strong winds and heavy rain making the start a daunting prospect. Some riders elected to go home early but those who got underway found the conditions improved as the race went on.
Barry Bullivant worked well with Eddie Fabian to pick up the markers after the climb out of Kangarilla. They where caught by the 10 minute group on the descent on the Kangarilla Road and rode on as a group to the finish. Peter Blackburn made a valiant effort to catch them but the group strength and speed was too hard for a rider on their own.
Ian Davis has shown consistency after finishing fourth in two major events this year both in C grade in scratch events. His form has been quite good in club handicaps with a fifth and ninth place in the last six months. One to watch in weeks to come.
Eddie Collins has continued his run of good form with this being his tenth placing in the last twelve months with the club. He is yet to break through for a win but it will not be far away. A second at Back Valley and two thirds in D grade scratch events give an indication of his strength.
James Russell scratch rider who began with Blair Howell took the fastest time with a very creditable 1:16:28 and average speed of 37.9km/hr which is commendable in the tough conditions.
