Peter Moore in a vigorous display of forceful riding took out a intensively fought out victory on a challenging and rugged course in the Club Picnic Scratch races in windy conditions this Sunday. His win in A grade was no surprise with Peter featuring regularly in scratch events this year. He was the winner in the Natural Choice Flooring event in November and has creditable placings in every other scratch event this year. He held off a very strong field. Second went to much improved James Russell promoted after numerous successes in B grade with victories in the Trek Cycles and Dean Stephens races. James has indicated to all that he commands respect at the top level. In third place was the ever consistent Blair Howell. Blair claimed his fifth placing in a scratch events this year. Blair was a winner in September in the Koffee and Snax scratch race and has taken third in two other major events in A grade this season.
B Grade had a breakaway of four riders on the second lap with Norman Hoy taking a popular victory on the line. Norman has been around the mark this season on many occasions but this is his first major victory this year. He has been a strong club rider with nine other placings this season but he will be well pleased to have broken through today. Second went to John Amos whose list of successes this year is growing to be so long that it is difficult to mention in short report. He has now claimed fourteen placings this season and has first places in C Grade in the Detrac and Milang scratch events. Third went to new rider Mark Shields promoted after his victory in C grade in the Velo City and Weatherall Electrical Scratch event. He showed he has the ability to go even further with this intense ride. "No doubt he will be one to watch out for" was written in the report that day and it looks like that is the case.
C Grade had a breakaway of two riders on the third lap with Phil Lean and Chris Ossowicz taking off on their own only to be pulled back with two kms to go by strong riding from Chris White, Justin Dawson, Jimmy Olds and Eddie Collins. On the line it was a sprint with six riders in contention with Jimmy Olds claiming the victory. Jimmy has tasted victory recently in the Apollo Raceline scratch event and has two second placings in C Grade in the Dean Stephens and Bicycle Express events this season. Second placed Chris Ossowicz broke through for his maiden result in club events this year and Justin Dawson has added to an impressive list of results this
year with an effective ride.
D grade was taken out 'effortlessly' by 'former C grade champion' Eddie Fabjian who thanked the handicapper at the presentation. A look at the records show that he has been a proficient D grade rider this season winning the World Vision Charity Event in that grade and has claimed a place in C grade recently in the Koffee and Snax event in September. Eddie in his own words 'controlled the group for most of the day' but had to fight on the last lap with Neil Thies making a brave break with about four Km to go. Eddie caught Neil and surged ahead with one km to go and on the line the minor placings where contested by a pack of five riders with Robert Lee and Barry Bullivant being successful. Robert won E grade in the Milang Open and now has a second result with the club while Barry has moved in to double figures for the year with his tenth result. He has shown a pleasing return to form but is still waiting to break thorough for a first.
E grade had a group of four break on the second climb out of Douglass Gully . This group stayed together for the rest of the race but on the line club president David Milne showed his experience to claim a victory and a long awaited return to form. David took second in E grade in the Trek Cycles event and also placed fifth in D grade in the Dean Stephens Event earlier this year. New rider Kevin Dye took second to add to his fifth in Division two in the Bicycle Express Special and evergreen Brian Else took third.

Consistency Finale`
21/10/01
Well the final round of the 2001 Consistency Awards sponsored by Herb Valley, the SAVCC and Impact Internet Services attracted an excellent turnout, justifying the hard work put in by The SAVCC, Impact, the two hosting clubs the SDV&LCC and the V&LCC, and last but not least those who supported the races with product prizes, cash incentives, editorial and technical assistance. I would like to acknowledge the following for their support and commitment, not only to veteran cycling, but to me personally
HERB VALLEY
AUST LIQUOR MARKETERS
CAPRICCIO ITALIAN RESTAURANT
BOLLE`
BICYCLE EXPRESS
BARRY TIMMINS
HIGH FIVE
MCWILLIAMS WINES
CAFE` MIRAMARE`
CADBURY SCHWEPPES
NORWOOD PARADE CYCLES
GREG CHIVERS
In particular I'd like to say a big thankyou to BICYCLE EXPRESS for their continued support and sponsorship of veteran cycling here in South Australia. Their enthusiasm goes far beyond what can be seen as normal when it comes to support for the veteran cycling scene here in our state. Thanks to their support, this coverage with editorial and photo images has been possible, not just at consistency award races, but regularly at races weekend after weekend. Two other contributors I'd like to single out are Barry Timmins and Greg Chivers. Barry has made sure that every week I have received race reports and results from the SDV&LCC and Greg Chivers has busted his guts out doing the consistency awards point score and where ever possible, forwarding those elusive results from the V&LCC. Impact has committed itself to the award in 2002 and the current council of the SAVCC have been advised of my intentions.

John Amos took out Division one of the Bicycle Express Mount Compass Handicap to claim yet another victory in major events this year. John has shown very good form when it counts winning first places in C grade in the Milang Open and Detrac race day and in B grade in the World Vision Charity event. These are just a few results from his long and impressive list of many. What is clear is that he has continued to improve and needs respect in A grade in future. All of the placings in Division one came from the markers group at 11 minutes. Their victory was sweet but helped by the scratchies taking the wrong turn. Second place went Jimmy Olds taking his third result in SDVLCC organised events this year. Jimmy has shown form in C grade recently with a victory in the Apollo Raceline Scratch and a second place in the Dean Stevens event in June.
Third place went to Geoff Hillman. Having shown himself too strong for division two he moves in to the top grade and blitzes the field. A look at the records shows this to be his Sixteenth result for the season with an impressive string of victories and second spots. Fourth place was taken by Chris White to produce his second favourable result in open events this season. Chris has shown very good form in club handicap events with his list very close to double figures. This compliments his best result a second in C grade in the Apollo Raceline Scratch race and shows that he can match it with best in Division One. Fifth place went to Peter Lean for his first result with SDVLCC events this year.
In Division Two the winners also did not come from the scratch group. Strong riding by Martin Minge and Ray Cockram from the two minute group dominated the final stage of the race with a small group of desperate riders trying to hang on.
Ray took victory on the line to claim his second result in SDVLCC events this season. He was placed second in the Natural Choice Flooring Handicap earlier this year. Martin Minge also added to his results list after being placed fifth in E Grade in the Trek Cycles Scratch race in May. Third Placed Martin Boas was also a place getter in the same grade and race taking fourth. Helen Roach likes the Bicycle Express events making this the second time she has taken fourth. Her other result was in the last Impact services award event in September the Bicycle Express Two Division Special Club Event. Fifth place was taken by Robert De Ross for his first result in SDVLCC events this season.

Ellaway's in form win

Mike Ellaway rode a impressive race on Sunday to claim his first victory in club handicap events this season. Mike is the club roadrace champion in category two and sprinted well in the finish to hold off a pack of six fast finishing riders. He also took out the fastest time on the day. It was a good day for the scratch riders who caught the last of the markers on the final run down Strout road to the finish. Starting and finishing as a group they punched their way through the earlier starters steadily during the three lap 54km course.
Second place went to Syd Carter who recorded his sixth result for the season. He was placed third in A grade for the Koffee and Snax event last month and has placed in three club handicap races this year.
Paul Bell had a very fine ride following the scratch riders to the line to take third. He has featured in B grade claiming creditable places in three major events this season and has recorded five placings so far this year.
Effective A grade regular Blair Howell took fourth to take his tally of results in club events to six this season. Blair is the Club Road race champion in category four and claimed victory in the Koffee and Snax in A grade last month. His good form should be a worry to other riders in A grade with a number of scratch events in the coming months.
The race was led by the early markers until the third lap when a group of seven riders who started in the six minute group caught up and a large pack formed. This group was split on the Chapman's Road climb when Barry Timmins, Joe Skibinski and Deidre White broke away. The fast moving scratch riders caught this group at the top of Binney and powered to the front on the finishing straight. Timmins and Skinbinski held on for minor placings with Geoff Hillman, Chris White and Steve Hazel finishing robustly after just missing the break made by the scratch riders up the last hill.
Barry Smith who was buried last week in club colours was respected in the presentations with plans in place for an annual memorial event in the future. Club members have established a fund to assist Barry's widow Sandra and family and contributed dedications to a remembrance book to honour an admired rider and good friend who has been lost to the club.
