Talent shows through in Southern Vets Time Trial
A talented field of veteran riders braved windy conditions in this weeks Southern Vets Club
Time Trial Championships. Medals where awarded in eight age divisions. A sprightly Noel Myatt
from Maslins Beach was the oldest competitor at 73 taking the gold in category 8.
Despite the tough conditions a number of efforts stand out as exceptional. Explosive Dave
Gomers winning time in category 3 was the fastest of the day and marked a superb effort. Very
little separated the winners in categories one to three. A swift Brenton MacDonald from Glenelg
was another stand out winning category two with a faster time than the winner in category one.
Ray Deed from Coromandal Valley was a fitting winner of category five and showed he is a force
to be considered seriously with a time that would have seen him win category four. Blackwoods
Trevor Gregory and Wolfgang Harder from Strathalbyn could also have won against much younger
competitors with times to match the best in category four. The evergreen Laurie Pearce and
runner up Peter Blackburn from Millswood also recorded times which would have seen them placed
highly in category four. Laurie's effort is even more admirable considering he was only
recently involved in a serious accident while competing with the Southern Vets.

Perin's first victory a team effort
A resolute Richard Perin drove his group to the line in a fine exhibition of team work to take
his first victory with the SDVLCC this Easter weekend. The race was run in perfect conditions
with a healthy sized field. Perin had recently featured in the places last month in a scratch
event and is going through a patch of agreeable form. Second went to earnest team mate Clem
Kelly with a steadfast Joe Skibinski taking third. This is Clem's optimum result since his
second in the Milang Open classic in 2001. Joe Skibinski toiled positively and earned his second
result with the club over the last two years. He was victorious in a club handicap in May 2001.
Peter Shiell showed tremendous form to take a place after finishing second in the Milang Open
Classic two weeks ago. New rider Chris Sutcliffe took fifth for his first result with the SDVLCC.
The winners all came from the 22 minute group who reeled in the limit riders and never looked back.
This group of eight worked positively together and remained in front despite some earnest work
which went on behind. The chopping block and scratch group caught a very fast bunch made up of
surviving riders from the six and nine minute groups on the final short climb up Binney Road.
The 22 minute group had laboured intensively enough to keep the pack at bay and crossed the line
without being challenged. An in form James Russell starting off scratch once again took fastest
time.

Milang Classic goes to Moore
Peter Moore showed incisive flair to win this weekends Milang classic in superb riding conditions
from a very potent field. Peter took the event in front of a fast finishing field but was never
challenged on the line. This is Moores best result in SDVLCC sponsored events in the last two
seasons and brings his club tally of significant results to nine. His last result was in the
Alexandrina Open last November when he claimed a admirable third in Division One. It was also a
good day for second placed Syd Carter who also took out his optimum result with the SDVLCC.
arter was placed fourth in the Detrac race day last month and will be delighted with his effort
today which brings his club tally of results to nine matching the canny Peter Moore. Paul Bell
showed his class once again to claim a well merited third and continues his good run of form
this season taking his result tally to nine. Fourth Place went to an flourishing Mark Piro to
claim his first result this year with the club. He was last placed in the Xmas Scratch races in
December last year. Fifth went to Dean Stephens from the VLCC for a first result in SDVLCC
sponsored events.
B grade was monopolised by riders from the VLCC with the exception of third placed Peter Fry
whose form is exceptional at the moment with a club tally of ten prominent places in the last
two years. Winner Mike Atkinson, Brenton Telford, Chris Brown and Mike Worden all recorded
their first results in an SDVLCC sponsored event.
C grade was a similar story with Jimmy Olds holding the flag for the Southern Vets claiming
second. His record of late has been inspiring with 8 major results to his tally and a win in
the Detrac Scratch Races last month. Winner Dave Stocker and place getters John Matthews, John
Rich and Ven Braithwaite all enjoyed their first success with the Southern Vets.
D grade had a major crash which caused the whole group to stop. Caroline Salisbury clashed
wheels with another rider and came down with a heavy fall. Judging from her bike which was in
a sorry state she may have made a lucky escape but she sadly required hospitalisation and may
miss a number of weeks as a result. The grade was won by a rampaging Vicki Birks who may have
been inspired to work harder for Caroline. Vicki is having a particularly good patch of form
and now has eleven major results with the Southern vets in the last two seasons. Second went
to a fierce working energetic Paul Weatherall who is also looking serious at the right time of
the year. Paul has increased his result tally to seven and this result is his best for some
time. Dave Symmonds took a well deserved third and is also looking dangerous. He will be
breaking through for that elusive first soon if his form continues to strengthen. He now has
nine major results in the last two seasons. This third is his first this year and matches his
prime to date which was in the Mega Bike event last June. Jenny Kemp took fourth with John
Lapidge fifth.
President Dave Milne and a rapidly improving Dave Tyler held up the Southern Vets flag in E
Grade taking second and third. Dave Milne was second in the X-mas Scratch races and now has
five major results with the club. Dave Tyler is on a roll taking his second result in as many
weeks after cleaning up E grade in the World Vision Event. VLCC rider Stan Malbut took first
with team mates Dave Rootes and Brian Hargraves taking the other places.
F grade was won by exceptional VLCC rider Kate Haasma with two Southern Vets claiming places.
Peter Schiell broke through for a well earned first result with the club while evergreen and
improving Noel Myatt took an impressive third. Noel enjoys this event as he was a place getter
last year. Darryl Forest and Freddie Smith from the VLCC took the remaining places.

Reed Takes Charity Event In Style
Paul Reed won an eventful World Vision Charity event this weekend. Brenton Mac Donald led the run
for the line but some brave riding from Reed saw him claim a well deserved first victory. Paul
has shown the form needed to claim victory in recent weeks featuring in the places in A grade in
the Detrac Race day on the 24th. His team mate James Russell has continued his intimidating
season adding to his already convincing tally of results with the club. This second brings his
total to twelve major results with the club in the last two seasons. He will be hungry for
another victory soon as his last win with the club was back in December. This form will make him
a potent contender in the major events over the next few weeks in the Milang, Port Pirie and
Minlaton Tour. Third place went to Mike Ellaway in a tight sprint for the line.
The event was a great success with over $470 raised for our sponsored child Patti in Honduras.
Local business Koffee and Snax also made a very welcome contribution providing donuts for riders
and officials at the presentations. The race was run in perfect conditions with no wind and a
clear sunny autumn sky. It was marred by an accident in D grade with Laurie Pearce colliding with
a runaway dog and taking a heavy fall. Laurie needed to go to hospital suffering from severe
concussion and was ably supported by a number of noble riders who assisted him after the accident
and gave up the opportunity for victory themselves. Laurie would have to be one of the most
stubborn of patients unable to remember what day it was yet determined to get back on the bike.
It took quite a lot of convincing to get him in to the ambulance. Many thanks to the local police
for their assistance and the ambulance service who were on the scene very shortly after the fall.
B grade was won by visiting WA rider Greg Jones. Greg took third in the Detrac scratch races and
was a deserving winner today. Second placed John Distefano now has his fourth major placing with
the SDVLCC. Third was taken by a popular rider Norman Hoy who once again is showing good form at
the right time of the year claiming his twelfth major result with the club.
C grade had a disqualification for a rider who went through a red flag. The grade was won by Greg
Berryman to claim his second victory and result with the SDVLCC. Two out of two is a very
impressive start to the season. Greg will be another one to watch in the major events at this
level in the coming weeks. Second was taken by Peter Charos for his first result this year
following his victory in the Range club handicap event last November. Justin Dawson took his
tenth major placing with the SDVLCC claiming third. His recent efforts suggests he is returning
to form and will be one to watch in the coming weeks.
D grade was won by Eddie Fabian to take his tally of victories to three. He seems to make a
habit of winning events in which prize money is donated to charity. Eddie also won this event
last season in D grade. Second went to Vicki Birks who is coming in to good form having just
recently taken third in a club event on the 10th last month. Vicki has an impressive tally of
twelve major results with the SDVLCC in the last two years. Les Wharton claimed a well deserved
first result with the club taking third.
E grade was also a place for new triumphs with David Tyler taking his first victory and result
with the club. Second was taken by new rider Tony Bassett for a second result with the Southern
Vets with an improving Ray Hill taking third to follow up his result in the DETRAC scratch races
earlier this month.

Gill proving too strong down south
Shane Gill continues his most impressive run of results with the SDVLCC winning this weekends
A Grade Division of the Detrac Scratch Race. Shane has won every time he has started with the
Southern Vets and is unlikely to surrender his dominance on his current form. Other A grade
riders will be glad that he chooses not to ride with the club every week or there would be slim
pickings for most. Shane now has five firsts From five starts in the last two years. Second place
went to the dangerous James Russell to add to his inspiring list of successes this season. James
last won in December in the Christmas Party Scratch races. He is rapidly becoming one of the best
riders with a total of eleven major results to his name since he began riding with he club.
Third place was taken by Paul Reed for only his second result with the SDVLCC but on this form
he will be one to watch.
B Grade was won by Rob Gaggini taking his optimum result to date with the Southern Vets. Rob was
placed third in a handicap event earlier this month. Third went to visiting Western Australian
rider Greg Jones.
C Grade saw Jimmy Olds claiming yet another first to take his run of wins to four and his major
results with the club to seven. His last win was in a handicap event back in December. Second
went to an flourishing Chris White. Chris has only won once in the last few years and came close
today. He now has six major results with the club over the last two seasons. Justin Dawson
continued his climb up the ladder with a tense fought third to take his tally of major results
to nine.
In the handicap event the scratchies did not have a agreeable day with the fastest time going to
Peter Blackburn who started on the chopping block. The event was won by a earnest working group
of limit riders who maintained a superb pace all day to keep the pack at bay. Bernie Jeffries
took first to claim his second result with the SDVLCC in recent seasons with Ray Hill second.
Rays best result prior to his excellent effort today was a fifth in the Trek cycles event in may
last year. Third place went to the evergreen Wolfgang Harder who could feel a little hard done
by as there was some issues at the finish with A grade riders coming over the top with the line
in sight. Despite going on to the dirt the veteran was able to maintain his composure and claim
a well deserved third. Wolfgang matched his last result which was also a third in the World
vision Charity event in March last year.

Gill back in the winners circle
Shane Gill once again showed his class to claim his fourth straight victory in a row with the
Southern Vets in the A grade section of this weeks club event. Shane has a perfect record and
will win many more. His three other victories were last year between May and June when he won
the Trek Cycles, Apollo/Raceline and Dean Stephens events. Second place in A grade went to Syd
Carter for his second major result of the season and his seventh result with the club since
November 2000. James Russell continues to impress just grabbing third from a solidly finishing
Brenton MacDonald. James now has four major placings this season and has taken his tally with
the club to ten positioning him high on the list of the clubs foremost riders.
B grade saw ten riders in a bunched swift sprint finish with a potent Martin Refermat taking
victory on the line from Keith Sherring and Rob Gaggini. This is Martins second victory in B
grade this season. He won the Christmas Party event in December. Keith Sherring made a welcome
appearance on the winners list to take his finest result with the Southern Vets. His last result
was a fifth place in the Apollo Raceline event in July last year. Rob Gaggini has continued his
competent start to the season backing up his first back in late December in a Club Handicap
event. He now has had six major results since November 2000.
C Grade had a breakaway on the Chapmans abrupt climb with Wayne Frost making a courageous move
to grab a victory. Hard work from a forceful Ian Davis saw the move come to nothing and left the
race open on the line with Geoff Hillman the clubs most effective rider coming from nowhere to
grab yet another victory. He just might be appearing in B grade in future. Second went to Brian
Martin who took his results tally to five and made his first major result for the season. He was
victorious back in June in the Dean Stephens event in C Grade.
D grade also had a bold breakaway but much earlier on the run in to McLaren Flat when Barry
Bullivant, Eddie Fabian and Dave Symmonds made a vigorous bid to leave the group behind. As with
all other grades getting away seems to have been very difficult. Mark Goddard took his first
victory with the Southern Vets in a mass sprint for the line. Second went to a intense finishing
Eddie Fabian who just kept Vicki Birks in third. This is Eddies first major result this season
he was the winner In the Club Picnic event in October last year. Vicki Birks continues to
impress taking her tally of major results with the club to nine.
E grade was won by the evergreen Laurie Pearce. He claimed 'with a little help from his brother
in law' in a car which arrived at the sprint finish. Luck was on Laurie's side and once again he
timed his run precisely to take his twelfth major result with the Southern Vets and place himself
in the top ten most successful riders in the last few years. Second went to a rapid finishing
Richard Perin for his first ever result with the club. Alan Titterton continued his admirable run
of form to take third and his second major result this season.
F grade had six riders in contention for the sprint. Dave Beaumont took victory on the line for
his second first with the club. He last victory was in March last year. Second went to an
influential Tom Trowbridge to be placed for the second week in a row. Kate Logan continues to
add to her list of successes taking third and claiming her first result of the season.

Block gets up as the going gets tough
Scratch riders found the going tough again this week with a determined effort from the riders in
the chopping block. The one minute thirty second group showed way too much class and not only
forced their way through the whole field but took out fastest time. The effort was led out by two
in form riders. Brenton MacDonald took the honours on the line from Paul Bell. Brenton has had a
good start to the season taking second last month in the Club Christmas Party event. His record
with the SDVLCC is very impressive with eight major results in the last two seasons. His sharp
finishing and a powerful surge up the last Chapmans Ave assured him of victory.
Interviewed after presentations Brenton remarked "The chopping block worked hard together carving
its way through the field." "The lack of major groups working together was a surprise but I don't
think any of the Middle Markers or the Limit Riders found the going to their liking. The wind
made it pretty tough to keep together and rolling through."
Paul Bell is a rider to watch this season with four results since November. He totalled five
results in the previous season in twelve months and on this form will take a lot more honours
this year. Paul was successful In the Range Club event in November and also performed well with
Brenton on the Christmas party event taking third.
Third place went to a fast finishing Peter Fry who was the only other rider able to strongly
respond to the move on Chapmans. This is Peters' first major result with the Southern Vets this
season but he is a recognised contender with nine major results last season.
Evergreen Trevor Gregory showed his class to take fourth to produce his first result this year.
He was particularly strong in 2000 with five major results taking two seconds in B grade in
Scratch events and the Club Championship in the time trial for Men Category Six.
Flying home for fifth was Norman Hoy who claimed "it was bloody hard and thanks for the help".
Norman has made an impressive start to the season despite the bees. This is his eleventh major
result with the club in two seasons and brings his season tally to four.
The strong wind made the going tough for everyone today and unlike previous weeks no large pack
was able to get together. Many of the groups fragmented with a large number of DNFs. The effort
of the riders in the chopping block and those who hung on as they powered through must be
commended. Paul Reed worked with the group but punctured and spare a thought for Tim Kersten who
worked hard to the end to just miss out finishing sixth.

Girls Big Day Out
In Humid conditions a large field of riders was taken by surprise by a earnest cooperative and
talented group of ladies who where never caught by the competitive chasing pack. A impressive
Connie Wharton claimed her first victory and result with the Southern Vets in a team effort that
kept a very large and swift moving pack at bay. She was ably supported by her group with Lyn
Grivel and new rider Marg Callaghan taking major places. Lyn was very pleased with the result
and thanked her group at the presentations for a admirable team effort. It is her second result
since 2000 with the Southern Vets. Lyn claimed a third place in a club handicap event back in mid
January last year. Marg Callaghan did an exceptional ride to claim a result in her first ride
and may suffer from the handicapper next week.
The men had to be content with fourth and fifth this week. Fourth went to effective club rider
Joe Zoanetti to bring his total of major results to five. He was last successful in March last
year taking third in the World Vision Charity Event 2001.
Fifth place went to Bob Seymour who is starting to command respect as a rider and now has eight
major results to his name since 2000. He was placed third in the November Club Scratch Event at
the range in C grade.
The challenging course claimed many scalps with several long drags and a steep climb out of
Bakers Gully. Groups formed early making it difficult for scratch riders today.

Berryman grabs his first victory in 2002
An imposing Greg Berryman claimed his maiden result with the SDVLCC in a fast and intense warm up
to Wednesdays Tour de Strath. The race had a significant field of 63 riders with a number of big
names from the tour getting in some last minute preparation.
Greg showed considerable speed in the sprint to hold off a swift finishing Keith Wong. Third
placed Chris Ossowicz and fourth Mick Tagel burst out of the group on the line to claim places
in a massed finish. It was such a large group that judges where unable to allocate fifth place
with the riders so close and tightly packed on the line.
A very aggressive and rapid moving pack dominated the race. The group formed on the second lap
picking up the markers early on Mc Murtrie and the rest of the starters up to the 12 minute group
through McLaren Flat. It was never to be caught by the Scratch pack despite scratch rider John
Watters claiming the fastest time with a very impressive average of 38.46km/hr. Any one of thirty
riders had a chance on the line but it was Greg Berryman who had the edge. He was clearly pleased
to have broken through for this result considering the talented and substantial field that
contested today. He will feature in future reports.
Keith Wong has been saving his best and featured in the places in last years Tour. On todays
form he could well be a chance again. This is his best result with the SDVLCC. He has two other
major results in recent records. A third in the Trek Cycles Scratch last May and third place in
the Remembrance Day race in December 2000.
Chris Ossowicz continues to impress. This is his third result with the club and his second this
season backing up his win in the Range Club event in November. Mick Tagel has also taken his
results tally to three. He last featured with a third in the Natural Choice Flooring Scratch
event in November at the end of last season and prior to that was third in a club event in
December 2000. He will be pleased to have shown such good form with the strong field today and
can be confident that he will not be waiting quite so long for his next result.
The race also had its casualties. A number of riders pulled out due to the speed but also
perhaps with Wednesday in mind. Norman Hoy had to be taken by ambulance to hospital following
the event. He had been with the front group until stung by a bee on the last climb up Chapman
and at the finish was in considerable distress. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can
make the start on Wednesday.

Gardiner In Popular Victory
Last weeks quality effort from the early starters was taken one step better with a tremendous
ride by Lew Gardiner to claim his first victory and his second result with the SDVLCC. He was
aided by some fine coaching from Bob Ritter and some excellent team work from his fellow markers
and place getters Noel Myatt and Tom Trowbridge. Lew has had to wait a fair while for this
success his last result was in November 2000. It was an excellent result from the group as they
were chased on the third lap by a pack of over fifty riders but a strong team effort kept them
in front. Lew rode the race on his big chain ring even up the short but challenging climbs on
Chapman's and Gaffney.
Noel Myatt has been very close to claiming a place in recent weeks and
was pleased to take second today. This is his fifth result with the club. He has two victories
to his name. He was a winner last year in April and is the the club Time Trial Champion in
category eight. Tom Trowbridge claimed his first major result with the SDVLCC to take third.
Scratch riders found the going tough again today and could not reel in the groups in front.
Linton Burns who came fourth took out the fastest time with 1:39:33 for an impressive average
speed of 36.97km/hr.
The race had two large packs form early on the second lap. Both these groups got together on the
final run in to McLaren Vale making a very large group of over 50 riders.
The three minute group forged their way to the front of this group as the line approached but
the markers had already crossed to complete a remarkable victory. Linton Burns and John Watters
showed excellent tactics to lead the large group home to the finishing line. Linton has had only
one other result with the SDVLCC but on this form he will be a regular feature in future weeks.
He was the victor in the Charity Handicap in November last year. John Watters took his results
tally to three with the SDVLCC. He has placed well in a number of important events with a second
in A grade in the World Vision Charity Event in March last year being his best to date.
