Linton Burns took a well earned victory in this weekends Founders Day event at the Southern Vets.
The handicap event was a mass start with handicap times deducted at the race end. In the windy
conditions riders worked earnestly to stay with the groups that promptly developed after the
start with the scratch riders pulling away even before the Oakley road turn. The race was
followed by the club AGM.
Linton has shown admirable form already this season and is no stranger to victory having now won
three times since starting with the club last year. He has five major results this year following
up his first victory in November 2001 in the Charity Shield. Victory today makes it two in a row
after taking first in a club scratch event in September. Eddie Collins improved on his fourth
placing in the Founders Day 2001 taking an convincing second. Eddie has an outstanding list of
results with the club and has taken placings three times this year. The Founders Event must be a
favourite.
Third went to a rehabilitated Paul Bell on the comeback trial after a fall earlier this season
which kept him out for a few rides. His list of successes with the club is formidable with
thirteen major placings since 2000. He is in a rich vein of form with six of these results coming
this year. Fourth went to a very solid working Jenny Kemp who blitzed the field with her potent
riding on the short but challenging climbs on the course. Jenny has four major results this
season which include a victory her category in the Club Roadrace Championship in June. John Amos
took a popular fifth for his third result this year.
Fastest time was given to the irrepressible James Russell who led the scratchies home. Their
work today was always going to be challenging as the large groups of riders helped improve
individual times overall. Peter Blackburn took the prize for the first unplaced over 60 with
Vicki Birks taking the first unplaced ladies prize.

Refermat continues 2002 dream run
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
Southern Districts Vets took racing to Mount Compass this weekend enduring gale force winds and
many hazards on the roads which included a number of cows and a couple of dogs. The tricky
conditions and tough course caused a number of riders to abandon.
In Division One Martin Refermat continued his most impressive run of successive victories
claiming his sixth win in a row this season. He had to work hard to fight off a fast finishing
and hard working scratch team but bravely held out taking the race from the consistent and ever
present James Russell. Martin is making a habit of taking first place his last was in the recent
Strathalbyn Professional two weeks ago. James Russell continues to take results and prizes
claiming second and the fastest time on the day. The remaining places went to the Scratch and
two minute group with John Danvers third to take his results tally to three following up his win
in the Dean Stephens Scratch event in June. Mike Ellaway took fourth bringing his results tally
to eleven with the Southern Vets. Syd Carter made a welcome return to the results list taking
fifth and claiming his first result since March when he was second in the Milang Open Classic.
In Division two it was a great day for Brian Bates who riding with the Vets for the first time
claimed his very first victory. Doug Tuckey continued his rich vein of form to take second and
claim his best result in an open event. Doug was the only survivor from his 16 minute group with
the remaining places be taken by the Outer Harbour contingent of the 9 minute starters.
Graham Banks was awarded the fastest time the best finisher from a hard working but unsuccessful
scratch group.

James Russell's winning streak continues
this report thanks to SDV&LCC MEDIA ..... Barry Timmins
James Russell continued his domination of Southern Vets racing with another hard earned victory
this weekend in the Strathalbyn Professionals Club Scratch event. James has a formidable record
of success and along with the seasoned Geoff Hillman shares the finest record in the club. James
has a herculean twenty two results with twelve victories since 2000.
With small fields of riders in a number of grades getting dropped was fatal. The long climbs and
steep descents made for some very competitive racing in the bunches. Second in A grade went to
Mike Ellaway. Mike is having his best season with the club and now has five major results this
year. His victory in his age division in the Club Road Race Championship is his best result this
year but today he showed excellent form and produced his first second place for the season.
The remaining places went to club stalwarts John Giles and Peter Grivel. John continues to
impact taking his third result for the year and twelfth since November 2000. Relentless Peter
has six results this year and a result listing of fourteen in the last two seasons.
Only three places where awarded in B Grade. Martin Refermat made a very strong finish to take
victory over a hard working Ian Davis and the consistent Fhillpo Imessi. Comment on Martins form
is essential as he has now taken victory in his last five results. This run stretches back to
December 2001. He has not won every time he starts but when he is a chance he rides to
perfection. His strength in sprinting requires respect.
C grade was taken by Mick Tagel making his maiden victory with the club and second result for
the year. Regular achievers Chris White, Justin Dawson and Tony Bassett took the placings. Chris
White is travelling particularly well this year matching his best results in the Adelaide Steel
and Detrac races and taking his seventh placing this year. Marcus Roberts has not been sighted
much this year and will be pleased with his hard fought third. Tony Bassett is a highly reliable
rider and now has eight placings this year.
D grade was taken by Dad's Army General and joint leader in the clubs overall result tally Geoff
Hillman. Geoff is showing ominous signs that he is on his way back to his best. Rampaging Wayne
Stephens and a vigorous Peter Blackburn took places to secure a trifecta for the Army once again
with a back to form Paul Weatherall and an diligent John Amos also being rewarded for strong
efforts.
E Grade should have been an easy victory for Trudy Fenton who broke away early and was not seen
again but at presentations her absence from the results suggests a problem on the course. A
reliable Caroline Dangerfield will be very happy as she was awarded her first victory with the
Southern Vets since November 2000. Comeback king Dave Ward showed he will climb the grades soon
to take second with the other places going to Caroline Salisbury, Clem Kelly and Barry Timmins.
E grade was a hard fought affair with victory going to an energetic Richard Perin for his second
victory with the club. Richard is in a rich vein of form of late claiming three results this
month alone and his fifth since the run began in February this year. Lyn Grivel was pleased with
her second equalling her best result with the club and lifting her results to three this year.
The remaining places where taken by Deidre White for her first result with the Vets, Dave
Beaumont claiming his third result this year, and Connie Wharton running on new wheels and
taking her third prize for the season.

Alan Gill showed impressive form with A Grade in the Southern Vets in the Velo City Weatherall
Open through the Southern Ranges this weekend. This is Alans first victory with the club. His
last result was a second in July last year in the Apollo / Raceline Open behind Shane Gill who
did not ride today. Riders had good conditions but faced a demanding course with long climbs up
Peters Creek and Wickhams Hill so the going was not for the weak hearted. The remaining places
in A grade went to very familiar names. James Russell added to his list of formidable results
and took his tally of major results to twenty one with the club since 2000 by taking second.
Peter Moore finished third for his fourth result in open events with the SDVLCC this year. Close
behind was Peter Grivel who now has thirteen major results with the club but the elusive first
is still to be captured. Fifth went to last weeks second place Steve Nash for his second result
this year.
B Grade saw an improving Fhillipo Imessi show his class to take his first victory with the club.
Fhillipo has featured regularly in results recently and now may be moving to higher ground in
future events. Outer harbour rider David Graham claimed his first result with the Southern Vets
to take second with regular place getters Ray Deed, Wayne Frost and Neil Theis claiming the
remaining prizes.
C grade was a a first Southern Vets victory to Outer Harbour rider Simon Cooper with the
remaining places going to SDVLCC riders Chris Farrant, Justin Dawson, Chris White and Eddie
Collins.
D Grade saw a first victory to Sam Portelli and a first result to Geoff Trenwith with Southern
Vets riders taking the remaining places. Joe Russo showed another good turn of form with Les
Wharton taking another result ahead of regular place getter Peter Blackburn.
E grade was ladies day. A good first win to Amanda Sparks who blitzed the field on the hills
with Helen Roach and Kate Logan showing their true colours on a demanding day. Geoff Barnes and
Vick DeLussey held the flag for the men.
F grader Brian Edwards claimed a well earned first victory with the Southern Vets with in form Doug
Tuckey taking yet another place in claiming second. Doug said after the race that this was his
most satisfying result to date and his best result in an open event. Form will see him climb the
grades soon. Stan Wilton., Kathy Jones and Samantha Greaves took the remaining places.

Hills, galeforce winds and road hazards. Just another days racing.
Southern Districts Vets took racing to the hills this weekend enduring gale force winds and many
hazards on the roads. The tricky conditions and tough course caused many riders to abandon. The
brave who continued had to work hard for rewards.
A convincing James Russell has stamped his authority on vets racing yet again taking his fifth
victory this year. His formidable list of results make him the most successful rider with the
club. He has twenty major placings since 2000 with eleven victories in this list. Fellow scratch
rider Steve Nash turned out for a rare ride with the club to claim a well earned second.
A commanding Neil Theis rode very earnestly to claim third with ever improving Tony Bassett
fourth. Joseph Hanusezwicz stole fifth from the chopping block riders Ray Deed and Fhillipo
Imessi.
In Division two it was a great day for Caroline Salisbury who claimed her very first victory
with the Southern Vets and her first result for 2002. Her last result was a second place way
back in September 2001. She deserved her victory today but may be fortunate
as a rampaging Trudy Fenton, who still claimed fifth, lost her chain on the final climb to the
finish. 'Dads Army' made another assault on the places with fastest time and third going to
forceful scratch rider Geoff Hillman with captain Peter Blackburn second and the elusive Tom
Trowbridge fourth. Toms recent run of results looks very impressive with this his third fourth
place in as many weeks. He has become one of the clubs most consistent riders with this trifecta.

Major crash marrs Kangarilla Circuit road race
A major accident involving riders from the A Grade section of this weekends club event caused the
race in this division to be abandoned. Two riders where seriously hurt in the fall on the bends
returning from Kangarilla to McLaren Flat. It is a fast downhill section and riders where
exceeding speeds of 50km when the accident happened. Paul Bell and Norman Hoy both where hurt in
the crash and taken to hospital. Paul has some facial injuries and Norman a suspected broken
collarbone. Both they and other riders in the Grade where lucky that the injuries and casualties
where not worse given the section of the road and speed at the time. Other Grades not involved in
the accident continued to race.
A defiant Linton Burns was successful in B grade bringing home a five rider breakaway. Eleven
riders started but on the line it was a sprint with a dedicated Wayne Frost the unlucky fifth in
the group. Linton has taken his second victory with the club in style. His first victory was last
year on 11 November. Second was taken by relentless Ray Deed with a lively Trevor Gregory and
Ian Davis 'the Pantani of the South' taking third and fourth.
C Grade saw a maiden ride and victory to a commanding Jeff Rose who brought home a six rider
breakaway. A fast finishing Justin Dawson and Andrew Kulhman could not be separated even with
video footage for second place. Fourth went to noteworthy new rider Peter Franklyn.
D grade was a well earned victory to enterprising Clem Kelly. Clem is a long term inspiring club
member and this surely could not be his first victory but records show he has not bettered today
s result since the club database began in November 2000. Dad's Army captain Peter Blackburn took
an impressive second with Greame Lovell and Tom Trowbridge taking the remaining places. Tom is
in a rich vein of form of late placing fourth only last week in a handicap event.
E grade was another maiden ride and victory to Gabriel Kalotay. An improving Geoff Bate recorded
his best result with the club so far to take second and the in form slim line Doug Tuckey was
backing up last weeks win with a creditable third. Richard Perin took fourth after the three
leaders had broke away from the remaining pack on the Chapmans Hill climb in McLaren Vale.

In form Tuckey claims second victory
A energetic field of fourty riders saw an in form imposing Doug Tuckey take his second victory
with the Southern Vets this Fathers Day Sunday. Doug and his fellow outmarkers took the race
with a formidable effort holding off the potent pursuing field with the finishing line in sight.
Scratch riders worked solidly but could not make up the distance in the near perfect conditions.
It was a special victory for Doug Tuckey today who has had to wait nearly twelve months to taste
victory with the club again. He was last successful on 9th September 2001. Doug has lost some
kilos and looks in fine form suggesting he will not be waiting long to take first again. Doug
has four major results with the Southern Vets since his first success back in November 2000.
Second was another lively finish to fellow outmarker Lew Gardiner. Lew has been riding with the
club for less than twelve months and has recently taken first in similiar conditions as today
back in January this year. He now has three results to his name and due to his current form may
be starting later in the coming weeks.
Third place went to new rider Russell Dunston who began the race with Doug Tuckey and put in a
stirling performance to hold of the chasing pack.
Fourth was taken by evergreen Tom Trowbridge who ran a resourceful race saving enough for a
vigorous finish to make up the distance on the lead group on the short and steady climb up Binney
Road. Tom has had a very admirable start to 2002 with six results to his name so far.
Fifth was claimed by Tony Bassett who like Tom has had a significantly stylish beginning with six
results this year. Tony fought successfully to make up the ground as he began with the 12 minute
group and had to work his way through the field to just miss out on the money on the line.

Refermat's winning style
On a day when Scratch riders went missing a lively and shrewd Martin Refermat came to the fore
to win his first handicap event with the club. Martin is running in a rich vein of form taking
his second victory in a row after winning B grade in the Apollo Scratch Races last weekend.
Martin has making a habit of claiming victory with his last four results being first places. His
list is inspiring with seven major results with the club since 2000. On his present blitz he will
be adding to this on a methodical basis in the next month unless the handicapper gets restless.
Second place went to club stalwart and powerful veteran rider Club Road Race Champion Ray Deed.
This was also a new frontier for Ray winning his first handicap race and bringing his race result
tally to twelve with the club since 2000. New rider Fhillipo Imessi continued to influence with a
vigorous third place ( his best result to date) Fhillipo has become a regular place getter since
starting with the club in June and will break through for a well earned victory soon. Fourth
place went to captain Norman Hoy. Norman drove the chopping block firmly today and could be heard
yelling encouragement to the group as they increased their unassailable lead from the pursuing
scratch riders. Norman has an formidable list of results with the Southern Vets and would have
to be one of the foremost improved and successful riders in the club. He has an outstanding
fourteen major placings with the club since the end of the 2000 season. Fifth today went to
another advancing new rider Wayne Frost to claim his fourth result in three months.

James Russell beats tough course
James Russell made a unpretentious conquest in the Apollo Raceline Scratch Races run in
excellent conditions on a tough course through the rolling hills of the Mclaren Vale wine
district this weekend. The Event was sponsored by Keith and Rebecca Wong of Bicycle Express.
A Grade was run at a solid pace with the pack staying together throughout the race with Russell
displaying his superiority on the line for the fourth time this year. His list of victories
has continued to grow at a very convincing pace with ten first places since 2000 and a very
inspiring 19 major results to his name. A record no one else in the Southern Vets can match.
An ascending John Watters took second to follow up his fastest time at Back Valley recently and
to take his fourth major result this year.
B Grade saw a return to form for Martin Refermat the scratch racing specialist. His last result
was a victory in the Club Scratch Event in February in B Grade. Second place in B Grade went to
new rider Wayne Frost for his third result since June this year.
C Grade was a repeat of the Dad's Army victory at Back Valley without the captain Geoff Hillman.
Laurie Pearce and Wayne Frost continued their impressive form to take first and third with a
determined and in form Neil Thies claiming second.
D grade saw new rider Mark Benjamin taking his first victory and adding to his impressive list
of results with Rolf Goodacre and Carolyn Dangerfield taking second and third.
E Grade was taken by Dave Beaumont for his third victory with the Southern Vets with a strong
ride from Brian Else to take second.
A number of excellent efforts in the recent Australian Veterans Cycling Championships in July at the Gold Coast are worthy of recognition. Southern Vets club member Ray Deed was very successful with a Gold medal in the 55-59 years category in the 25km Road Time Trial Championship and John Destefano was victorious in the 55-59 years category in the Road Race Championships.
Two other South Australians had stand out results with Malcolm Clasholm from Whyalla taking an impressive 3 gold and a bronze and Shane Gill taking the gold in the 35-39 years category in the Road Race
