Following his stupendous riding in the recent AVCC Australian Road Racing Championships, Peter Moore returned to club racing at the Koffee N Snax Handicap race day conducted by the Southern Districts & Ladies Veteran Cycling Club. While it would not produce a win for the south australian champion his efforts did gain the award for fastest time in the premier division one handicap event over a distance of some 54km. Moores efforts this year earned him the clubs Champion of Champions Trophy joining a most impressive list of winners which includes Pat Marcucci, Blair Howell, Peter Taylor and Syd Carter.
The division one event was won by Herb Valley sponsored rider Dave Gomer who used his track skills to outsprint Paul Bell, Blair Howell, Trevor Gregory, Dave Clark and Keith Wong. It was a well deserved win for Gomer who, along with Howell closed a gap of 7 minutes on the limit bunch while riding off the chopping block, a very tough task.
Division two, over a shorter distance of just 45km, saw a return to racing by the long abscent Bernie Jeffery and a first up win. It also saw a return to form by evergreen rider Brian Wilson who was under heaps of pressure in an eagerly contested sprint that saw Tom Trowbridge relegated from 2nd to 4th for errant riding when he shifted off his line in the last 200 metres of the race. This shifted Wilson up to 3rd overall. Fastest time went to Jim McCluskey(off scratch) while the first unplaced ladies award was won by Sam Greaves. Congratulations to Diedre White who took 2nd spot in the final results.

WILLUNGA
"Rose Garden Circuit"

Following the cancellation of the event scheduled for sunday August 20th at strathalbyn the Southern Veterans of South Australia promoted a 50km handicap event in the heart south australias premium wine area at the township of Willunga on south australias Fleuireui Peninsula. Willunga has received world wide attention the last two years as riders have tackled the climb of "Old" Willunga Hill during stages of the fabulous Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under. Today though riders would not be facing the arduous climb but rather the long drags on the "Rose Garden" Curcuit. The event was run over four laps of the circuit and although a few spots of rain were evident prior to race start, this soon disappeared and riders were greeted with a fine and sunny day just

ideal for racing. Conditions on the road for the first lap though remained slick and dirty with a few early retirements due to punctures. Limit rider Lew Gardiner held a handy lead for two whole laps but at the half way mark the rest of the field was gradually pulling him back. The two scratchmen in Tony McLoughlin and Mike Elleway were riding a calculated race, working steadily through the outmarkers as they took charge of the race. While there was no major climbing the long drag was making it tough for many of the competitors but giving the race judges an easy job as McLoughlin(Team Mittiga) came clear and crossed with 7 secs break on the field. Mike Elleway was left to outsprint Syd Carter(3rd sat 19/8/00 at Eden Valley), Dave Ward and Ray Deed. Peter Fry mad a good return to racing after being laidup by a pedestrian who recently stepped in front of him whilst he was out training. Sixth place was a good comeback. Just a further four seconds back augers for plenty of optimism about regaining his former form. Fastest Female rider was 9th placed Jenny Kemp while Carolyne Salisbury took the unplaced female rider award. Peter Blackburn picked up another prize taking the Over 65 award while Bob Dowell was last finisher but still managed to get in the prize list as he gained the first Over 60 award. Bob was pleasantly surprised as he though those in front of him had been contesting the age award.
